The Barman and the SEAL

MM Good Book Reviews - 4/5 - "....Ah hell, this has to be my favorite Ellery Mountain book so far with both Travis and Avery being incredible characters tugging at your heartstrings as their story unfolds. Avery is wonderful, so patient, and loving and he is the perfect man for Travis. Travis is a man torn by suffering, but he is incredible with his understanding of his own limitations but doesn’t let them rule him. Their relationship is slow but oh so powerful and the love they develop is especially strong because of the time they take as Travis begins to heal. While they fall in love, we see how well the Veteran Center is doing, we catch up with the characters from previous stories, and we see how Mikey is recovering from the brutal attack in The Paramedic and the Writer...."

Mrs Condit & Friends Read Books - 4.5/5 - "....Hands down The Barman and The Seal by RJ Scott is my favorite book in the Ellery Mountain series. Well, I did really love Jaime and Ian’s book but this one just squeaks ahead...."

The Case of the Wicked Wolf

Paranormal Romance Guild - Gloria Lakritz - 4.5/5"...The great personalities of these two authors made the collaboration of Amber Kell and RJ Scott a ‘no brainer’. You can see for yourself by the last interview we had with them,  when we did the Dual review for  The Case of Cupid’s Curse, Book one of their End Street Detective Agency series. This series is so off the wall, I cannot recommend it enough...."

Paranormal Romance Guild - Penelope Adams - 4/5"....This just a plain out good story, the author’s have a way with words that entertains and intrigues at the same time.   Their characters are rich and well fleshed out, their humor is contagious and I couldn’t help but smile through most of the story, even the yucky parts. We get the obligatory warning in the beginning: “this book contains sexually explicit content” and it does so I’ve warned you...."

The Case of the Dragon's Dilema

MM Good Book Reviews - 4/5 - "....This story is a wonderful addition to the End Street Detective Agency continuing the kidnapped children/ siren storyline while weaving slightly darker elements into it to give us an exciting dangerous story...."

The Barman And The SEAL - Out Today on third party sites

Ellery Mountain - book 6

Book 1 - The Fireman and the Cop
Book 2 - The Teacher and the Soldier
Book 3 - The Carpenter and the Actor
Book 4 - The Doctor and the Bad Boy
Book 5 - The Paramedic and the Writer
Book 6 - The Barman and the SEAL

A Navy SEAL with PTSD and a Barman starting a new life. Maybe they can find love in Ellery.

Travis Baranski, Navy SEAL, is the first veteran to attend the Ellery Mountain Veteran Center. He is having a hard time coming to terms with what he had seen and what he has done. When he has a very public meltdown in Ellery stores it is Avery Gideon who steps up to the plate and helps him.

Avery Gideon, a man cut off from his family for being gay, runs the only bar in town - The Alibi - and listens to many a person's problems whilst trying to forget his own.

He sees something in the wounded warrior who needs a friend and very soon finds himself falling in love with Travis.

Nothing will deter him from helping Travis, or from making Travis see he's still capable of loving Avery in return.

"...Compared to the first five Ellery Mountain books, this was probably the darkest and most emotional. There were times when it was quite hard to digest what Travis had to go through. However, I see this as the beginning of the turn in this arc, when the Center finally gets to help those who need it most and plays a larger role. This means we will be getting more serious and complicated characters where in the beginning, we got the ordinary guys who had some problems but nothing as bad as those who will come into or out of the Center..."

Time Zone Shenanigans

Time Zone Shenanigans

Welcome to the world... you can see me, on that tiny island slightly to the left of the middle. I live in a town about 40 miles North West of London which is where the Meridian line lies at Greenwich. As an island we are kind of really bloody small compared to everywhere else, yet the UK accounts for a chunk of my book sales.

When I first began this journey as a writer I would get up in the morning and post news and reviews etc, at the start of the day before plunging into my men (not literally).

When I became a little more savvy I realised at certain times of the week, and on specific dates, there would be a surge of comments, or reads, or chats. Not being as stupid as I look it was obvious that as a UK writer I have to be very aware of two things when I use social media. Time and Day. I needed to post things on specific days where I saw peaked traffic, and I needed to work out specific times when I could interact with my biggest market (the US) while still managing to talk to my friends and fans in Europe, Australia, Canada ... you get what I mean.

I used a variety of tools to be able to write posts when I am fresh in the morning, and have them appearing at the right times for overseas peeps to see. Hootsuite is a good one, but a bit fiddly to use at first. I discovered Buffer a couple of weeks ago, that is an awesome tool.

The drawback... scheduling a happy post about something happy, like the wonderful lemon crop in Happyville. What if your article came out at the same moment as the news is announced that the Happyville lemon crop has been destroyed by 'weevle lemonitus idiotus' (a particularly virulent species of the citrus loving weevle). No one wants to be seen as insensitive, and scheduling does have the capability of causing this issue.

I'll be writing an article on Buffer in the next week or so, but for now I leave you with this amazing tool Tweriod.

What Tweriod does is give you the idea of when you should be posting your news/reviews/covers etc so that you get the best audience available.

It's not rocket science and a lot of us worked it out for ourselves so it doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know. But what it did do is confirm by using graphs that what I was doing is what actually worked.

For example Tweriod tells me that my audience is online en-masse at the following times (all times in GMT London zone):

  • WEEKENDS - 5 pm and 6 pm, 7 pm and 8 pm, 10 pm and 11 pm (The US coming on line weekend mornings)
  • SUNDAYS - 5 pm and 7 pm, 8 pm and 9 pm
  • MONDAYS - 6 pm and 9 pm (again US mornings)
  • WEEKDAYS - 4 pm and 6 pm, 11 pm and 12 am

Tweriod is this cool thing that looks at a thousand of your followers and suggests when they are likely to be online (as a group, not individually).
Go play.

Love Lane Christmas Anthology Submissions

Love Lane Christmas Anthology Submissions

Love Lane Books...

...Is not a publisher who takes submissions in general. However, every so often we may call for a themed collection of free short stories. This is to showcase new talent alongside existing talent.

The current call, with a closing date of 30 September is *Christmas*.

Celebrate Christmas with RJ Scott

As you all know, Christmas is my favorite time of the year. I would love this year, to run a promotion aimed at new authors, but to also include existing authors.

Love Lane Books, my self publishing company, is inviting authors to write a free short story for a compilation.  I'm planning to pull them all together for download from 1 December from www.lovelanebooks.co.uk, AllRomance etc. It would be available to download for free, Love Lane won't be charging anything for it.

Theme

The theme is Christmas. This could be the day itself, the emotions surrounding it, the season of winter, a wedding, family, a new meeting, a reunion, paranormal, contemporary, historical, in fact anything.

Details

Short stories - from 3,000 up to 12,000 words
M/M, M/M/M you get the idea (no F's - sorry!)
Must have a theme of romance, HEA, or at least a HFN
Theme - Christmas
Heat levels - any
No bestiality, nechrophilia, etc etc

Each MS should be in a word document and emailed to rj@rjscott.co.uk. Include the following within the document on the first page:-

Your author name and a small bio if you like
A blurb for your story. Try and keep it to a few sentences.
Your email
Author Contact Details for readers
A list of other books available from you and the publisher name.
A statement that your work is an original piece of writing.

The closing date for all submissions in 30 September 2013

The cover will be supplied by Love Lane Books and the stories will be compiled into one volume. You can also post the stories on your own websites after 1 December. There is no payment for these stories, and as the price of the compilation is zero there will be no accrued royalties. The copyright remains with the author at all times. The author is responsible for editing, although all stories will be read to pick up anything really glaring.

To existing authors

You know the score about editing etc so I won't go there (!)... But, the reason I want to do this was that I think this is a good way for existing authors to support new authors, and each other.

To new authors

You should get your story beta read, and edited if you can, with proofreading. You are selling yourself and this is a chance to get your story out there.

To shave, or not to shave; that is the question.

Today I’m going to be talking to you about facial hair. No, not of the unwanted feminine variety, you may be relieved to hear! I’m going to talk about what is arguably the manliest of accessories: the beard.

Why do men grow beards? There’s probably as many reasons as there are bearded men in the world: fashion; religious observance; covering a weak chin and/or acne scars; to name but a few. Some men are clean-shaven up until middle age, when a receding (or totally absent) hairline prompts them to grow a beard on their chin, presumably to prove there’s testosterone in the old devil yet. And then, of course, there’s always the old standby: couldn’t be arsed to shave.

If only Njal had had one of these
Beards have danced in and out of fashion for centuries. And likewise, have been used to express rebellion. In the 1920s, beards were seen as a fusty mark of the establishment, and clean-shaven youths would roam the streets shouting “beaver!” when they caught sight of a bearded man. Nowadays, when few who aspire to public office would dare abandon shaving, it’s the anti-establishment youth who sport facial hair.

I always knew that Viggo in Fall Hard would have a beard. He’s a rugged, outdoor type—and more than that, he’s a Viking, albeit a modern-day one. Can you imagine a Viking without a beard? Actually, if you’ve read Njal’s Saga, then yes, you can. (It’s also known as The Saga of Burnt Njal. And yes, the end is exactly as gruesome as it sounds…) While his contemporaries reveled in their hirsuteness, Njal was unable to grow a beard. In a culture in which slurs on a man’s masculinity were the worst kind of insult, this was a gift to his enemies. One of them made up a little ditty describing Njal as a beardless wonder who ought to try smearing dung on his chin to see if it would make something grow, and his sons as “dungbeardlings”. He didn’t get to laugh about it for very long, however. Njal’s sons went straight out and cut off his head for the insult.

Beards: they’re a more serious matter than you thought!

I’ll be making the draw around teatime on Monday 30th September, GMT. Good luck! :D

Some memories are better off lost in the mist…

Eight months ago, British academic Paul Ansell lost his lover—and all the memories of their time together—in an accident at Iceland’s Gullfoss Falls. Returning to the misty island country to resume his study of the bloodthirsty Viking Egil Skallagrimsson is tough as he struggles to pull his life back together.

First, there’s his colleague, Mags, who treats him like glass, and summer student Alex, who peppers him with discomforting questions. Then there’s Icelandic jet-boat driver Viggo, a tattooed, modern-day Viking who won’t say much about how they know each other. Leaving Paul to wonder if their volcanic attraction is fuelled by a desire to make a fresh start, or desperation to forget the past.

As more fragments of his lost memories fall into place, Paul is unsure if he can trust himself, much less anyone around him. And he begins to suspect his accident was nothing of the kind.

Warning: Contains a modern-day Viking whose boat has V8 engines for oars, and a harsh land of hot springs and hotter passions that won’t forgive any false steps.

RJ Scott - New website goes live & Competition!

New Website
*Dances* Thanks to the awesome Mr RJ, I now have a brand spanking new website layout.

It's still in blogger and none of the content has been deleted. So, if you linked to an article at all, then no worries as it is still there!

Basically I had outgrown the standard layout and I really wanted drop down menus for series books and so on. Easy navigation was my first request. Then I wanted something that looked more RJ and less Blogger.

As you all know I am a bit of a cover whore! I wanted the site to have more images and I love the way this site gives you an image and a few words of explanation so you can see if you want to read more.

Mobile Version
Each book page now has all the correct buy links, but some of the pages may still need adjustment. Part of the issue here is that with over fifty books poor Mr RJ has to check each one individually. Each book page also has reviews and excerpts.

There is now a menu system that lists out all my books and are put together as series, standalone books or co-authored titles. If you liked the old masterlist of all books this can still be found under *More* on the menu. I am working on *master pages* for each series so watch this space.

Popular posts appear on the right hand side and there is also a box focusing on particular books each week.

If you find any links that don't work or you have any other comments please email rj@rjscott.co.uk and I will pass the comments on.

If you sign on to RJ Scott from a mobile phone then you will just see a list of the most recent posts in a simple form.

Meredith Russell made the awesome graphic for Texas 4 and this will change as and when I work on new projects.

I hope you all like. Let us know what you think...

Competition

Every subscriber to the site will be entered into a draw to win a signed RJ Scott book, or a $20 gift voucher for Amazon. (You subscribe by putting your email in the box just above popular posts).

Subscribers receive news on upcoming books, my work in progress, my general commenting, and I also host other authors.

Closing date 30 September 9pm GMT.

The Book
Kieran Addison, in his teens, falls in love with his brother Brad’s boyfriend, and he runs away to another country to bury himself in a career so he can forget. When his brother is killed in a car accident, Kieran comes back briefly for the funeral, but then leaves almost immediately, his emotions too raw to face Jordan Salter.

It's only when his father becomes ill, and his sister begs him to come home, that Kieran returns for good. He finds the family business almost bankrupt and Jordan, the man he loves, broken—a shell of the man he used to be, beaten down by despair over the business and guilt over Brad's death, a death he blames himself for.

RJ Scott, cleaning House, an apology, new website, Texas 4 & Montana 1

RJ Scott, cleaning House, an apology, new website, Texas 4 & Montana 1

Now that my wonderful hubby has now joined me full time at Love Lane Books, I can focus on writing even more... win / win.

Some of the projects that have fallen by the wayside, including a sequel to Bodyguard to a Sex God, Texas 4 (current WIP) and maybe a sequel to some other of my books, will now become a realistic goal for me. I am concentrating on writing longer books for TEB, starting with Montana 1 which is with them for editing, writing my paranormal for eXtasy and also beginning a new series with them in 2014.

Hubby will be working on a new website which he hopes to have live for next week *YAY*. As part of this we will be fiddling with the categories and lists on the site and you may find a few posts coming to you that you will already have seen... I apologise in advance.

The new website will be driven more by posts than containing long lists of things and you will be able to search through categories etc... there will also be drop down menus and books categorised by series, standalone, co-authored, etc. so I hope you find it a lot easier to find things.

Is there anything you would like to see on my new website? More news? Author interviews? Recommendations of books I have read? Let me know and I will pass it all on to Mr RJ.

Meanwhile, Texas 4 is flying along and will be with you to read on 11 October... watch this space for news... and my organisation skills are being tested by GRL which is now four weeks away *gasp*.

Hugs, RJ X

MM Good Book Reviews - 4/5: Ahhhh. These people are so romantic in their own macho way and they are surprising sweet together. Joseph has a lot of thinking to do about his future. Not just about his relationship, but also what he wants to do in his work life. Dale is just happy to have whatever time he can have with his sexy SEAL, especially if it involves him naked. These guys still have that explosive spark and they are still macho men. what they feel for each other is clear to see in their actions and thoughts and I can finally sigh in relief as they get their happy ever after. ... I have to recommend this to those who love alpha men, facing the future, accepting and receiving deep love, bombs, hostage situations, getting the bad guy and a very satisfying happy ending.

Hearts On Fire Reviews - 4/5: The last we saw of Joseph and Dale was in The Only Easy Day where we were left hanging with a HFN on their relationship. This installment in the Sanctuary series is all about the two men. I enjoyed the way Ms Scott wove the romance around Dale's taking Emily Bullen back from the west coast to turn state's evidence against her husband the senator. The story gave action at the airport fighting Griffin and his men who tried to kill Emily Bullen and balanced it with a great romance. The sex was hot and well written. There was a perfect flow to the story

Friday Interview - Rebecca Cohen

Friday Interview - Rebecca Cohen

What made you decide to start writing? What was your personal "kick-off"?
Really, for me this was: when did I start writing again? I wrote when I was younger, but put it all aside when I went to university to study biology and later begin a career in science. I felt there was something missing from my life in my late twenties. After a very lucid dream where I saw a Roman slave and a Roman general entwined together, I picked up my pen and words began to flow. Seven years later, I had my first publication, and the Roman scene is in a novel I’m currently working on.

Tetley's or PG Tips?
Twinnings! I no longer live in the UK, so when it came to hunting down tea, I discovered that the Swiss blends aren’t as strong as their British equivalents. I must have got used to it because when a friend brought over a box of teabags from the UK it tasted like gunpowder. So I am now the proud owner of a cupboard full of Twinning teas of different types and flavours, and a few exciting Swiss ones as well. Who’d have thought it, a British ex-pat with a thing for tea?

A lovely review from Mrs Condit and a wonderful recommended read...

Mrs Condit Reads Books 5/5 - One Night is a beautiful retelling of the oldest romance story in the world, the meeting by chance of two people, from totally different walks of life, and how that meeting turns their lives upside down. Highly recommended if you love tortured souls coming out and believe love can triumph over everything else.
