The Spence Cohen Series: Book One by N.R. Walker

The Spence Cohen Series: Book One by N.R. Walker

Thank you so much for having me RJ, I really appreciate it! Last week was the release of Spencer Cohen Series, Book One. And in light of that, I’m going to talk about writing a series.

First off, let me preface this by saying I’m not a plotter. At all. For me, planning a story begins with the main character’s name, his intended love interest’s name, opening the doc and writing the words “Chapter One”. Usually I have a general direction I know these boys will go, and more often than not, I will write the final/closing scene first. Kinda like knowing your destination, then going back and starting at the beginning for the entire journey.

And for me, writing a series is no different. I can honestly say, from all the series’ I’ve done (Red Dirt Heart, Turning Point, Blind Faith, Thomas Elkin, Cronin’s Key) I’ve never intended them to be more than one book. I simply started to write and when that book was done, their story wasn’t. So, I would open a new document and repeat the whole process over again, sometimes writing three or four books, until the characters told me their story was complete.

But with Spencer, I had a plan. Well, kind of. As much as I can plan anything, anyway. I needed to write something shorter―my brain was done with research-intensive novels after the Cronin Key Series, which had a combined word count of over 200K words, and I needed to write something short and fluffy. When I first had the idea of Spencer, he was supposed to be cocky and arrogant, his story was supposed to fun and sexy. But when I finally got around to writing him, he was telling me a different story. He was more complex than that. He had a not-so-nice past and some layers to peel back, so I knew one book wasn’t going to be enough.

I kinda knew his story would be more like Thomas Elkin’s. Three shorter stories with a consecutive timeline, each instalment showing a different level of character and development in their relationship. I’m happy with the three instalments and Spencer and Andrew’s story is complete―but I wouldn’t rule out a revisit to them somewhere in the future. I just can’t promise it this stage.

So while each story isn’t exactly a novel, they’re not that short either… Spencer One is 42K words, Spencer Two is 52K words, and Spencer Three is 50K words. So to put it simply, the story wouldn’t have worked as one book. Not only would the length, and therefore price of a 144K word book, be too high, the story Spencer was telling me was definitely in three parts. And I learned a long time ago not to argue with the characters in my head because I am, after all, just the one who types their story. ;)

So, more about Spencer One. I originally made the cover myself after finding the most perfect double exposed photograph, but I sent it to the lovely Sara York who works her magic with all my covers and she really made it perfect.

Here’s the blurb:

Spencer Cohen is the guy who gets answers to relationship questions. Playing the role of the new lover, his job is to make his client’s ex realise one of two things: he doesn’t want to break up or he really does. Either way, his client gets answers.

The ex would either apologize and beg, or turn and walk. But in the end, Spencer’s client won. If he wanted his ex back and got him, it was great. If the guy walked away, then as hard it was for the client, he knew it was over. Regardless of the outcome, Spencer’s work was done.

Andrew Landon’s ex left him without so much as an explanation. But his sister can’t stand to see him miserable, so, much to Andrew’s dismay, they hire Spencer to be Andrew’s new boyfriend to get the ex back.

For Spencer, it is never personal. Merely a business transaction. No emotions, no strings, no complications.

Yeah right.

Even a blind man could see how this would end.

Spencer Cohen Book One is exclusive to Amazon, and can be found HERE.

Spencer Cohen Book Two will be released March 17th, and Spencer Cohen Book Three will be released April 21st.

RJ's Review:

I've never met an NR Walker book that I didn't love.
The first book in her Spencer Cohen series, is wonderful. I fell in love with the characters. Enjoyed their journey so much and as usual with a NR book, I wanted more.

Loved and Highly recommended.

N.R. Walker’s Bio:

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance.
She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn't have it any other way.

She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don't let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words.

She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things...but likes it even more when they fall in love.

She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She's been writing ever since...

Who is my kind of hero?

Who is my kind of hero?

I love the strong silent uber-heroic types with the mushy insides. I love that moment in a film where the taciturn hero reveals that side of him that is caring and thoughtful and at the end of the day VERY heroic. This is exactly how I pictured Ben in The Ex Factor (Bodyguards Inc book 2)

When I wrote Ben I had in mind this really big guy who people don’t mess with. He’s strong, silent, and bloody good at his job. He keeps his poker face on at all times and even though he’s approachable he's all about the job.

I needed him to be able to show the heroism in an entirely different way. Not diving to take bullets or physically restraining a bad guy. Nope, I needed him to be able to create a safe space for Daniel to be able to make some pretty hard decisions and to begin to heal. This for me is a very different kind of heroism and one I loved to write.

So if you like your heroes quiet and reserved until the shit hits the fan, then Ben might just be your kind of hero.

The Ex-Factor

When Bodyguard, Ben Collins, finds Daniel Lincoln in a room, hiding and hurt, he doesn't immediately think Daniel is the victim of abuse. Daniel is good at pretending and being a finalist in a TV singing competition he seems like he has it made.

But something about Daniel calls to Ben's need to protect and he hands Daniel a card to contact him if ever Daniel needed help. Abruptly, after one frightened phone call from Daniel, Ben is racing to Daniel's aid and what he finds is a horror he can't imagine.

Daniel is trapped in a relationship where anger and controlling hate are the only emotions he is given. When his boyfriend crosses the line and leaves Daniel vulnerable and broken there is only one man that he wants to call.

The sexy bodyguard who promised he could help him.

Excerpt

“Daniel?” Ben asked with question in his voice. “They’re looking for you.”

Daniel pulled himself up, and if anything he forced more effort into standing tall and straight.

“Yeah, just needed a quiet space,” he explained. In his head he was gesturing around him with a free hand, but in reality he couldn’t much move his right arm, which was going to fuck with his ability to play guitar. He thought maybe his shoulder was separated somehow. He’d seen Mel Gibson knock his own arm back into place in Lethal Weapon once, but that wasn’t happening here. He sure as hell wasn’t a hero who could push through pain.

“Jesus, you look like shit,” Ben observed.

Daniel floundered for something to say, and the line he came out with was pretty pathetic. “I’m not sure you’re supposed to say that to me.”

“What the hell happened to you?”

Ben placed his coffee on the nearest box and walked over to Daniel, and Daniel couldn’t help the instinct that made him stumble back and end up against the wall.

Why did you choose a room with no way out? What are you? Stupid?

“Don’t come near me,” Daniel said in his loudest, most strident voice, even though it was nothing more than a forced whisper to his own ears.

“Fuck, Daniel, seriously? What the hell?”

Why would Ben ask that? What did he mean? Daniel panicked. Did he have bruises on his face? How could he go out in front of millions of people and perform with bruises on his face? He must have said some part of that out loud because the man looming over him shook his head.

“I don’t see any bruises on your face,” Ben said simply, carefully. “You’re holding yourself like you have a chest injury? Or your shoulder? What did you do to yourself? We need to get you to Casualty. I’ll call the medics.” He turned to leave, to find the one group of people that Daniel didn’t want anywhere near him. Cam would fucking end him if he involved the authorities.

“No!” Daniel said loudly. The pain of the words radiated from his chest to his shoulder, and if it wasn’t for the wall, he’d be on his knees or unconscious. “I just need more codeine.”

Ben moved closer, but this time there was nowhere for Daniel to go; he’d run out of room. He closed his eyes tightly and waited for the first blow or the spitting accusations of how the fuck he had let himself get in this state. Instead all he got was a gentle touch to his left hand, the one without pain radiating down to it.

“Daniel, you need to listen to me. You know me. I’m Benjamin Collins, with the bodyguards. You can call me Ben.”

“I know your name,” Daniel said defiantly. Maybe if he said how little he knew, then Ben would just leave without hurting him.

I am part of the problem... sort of...

I am part of the problem... sort of...

This week I met up with a group of authors for lunch. We talked stories, experiences, marketing, exchanged tips, and covered all kinds of publisher type things.

We looked at the publishers we were with, or who we had been with, and we discussed the vulnerability of those publishers in the current climate. The list of publishers we thought were safe was a short one, and Samhain was on that list. They have fantastic authors, excellent editing, wonderful cover art, and respect in the market.

So what happened? I was so sad to learn that Samhain have found it necessary to close their doors. I think they are doing it in a completely respectful way, talking to their authors, explaining that if they don't do something then it would become a situation where authors may be affected. Their market share is sliding and they are closing before they are closed.

I'm not here to discuss why, but anyone who writes now knows why publishers are struggling. It's a combination of a lot of factors, Kindle Unlimited, self publishing, pricing, costs of cover art and editing. It's no one thing; I couldn't point at KU, or Kindle in entirety, and say it was all their fault, and I certainly don't have the evidence to back up fixed cost analysis at publishers. I can't say it is entirely my fault as an indie publisher, but indie publishing is part of the issue.

So, how much does it cost *me* to get a single e-book out for sale?

Taking The Rancher's Son - the sequel to Crooked Tree Ranch, 62,000 words and placing it in financial terms that I can quantify - I don't count my time writing it, because let's face it a publisher doesn't incur the costs of an author writing the work to begin with (ignoring the concept of advances!).

Bear in mind I am self published, or independently published, however you want to label it. But I do write for my own publisher - Love Lane - who have fixed costs that I can try and apportion here as well.

All amounts in British Pounds

Cover Art - £85
Editing - £200 (estimated)
Marketing company - £90 *
Love Lane fixed costs (Hosting, software, accountant, etc) £50 (per book 'ish')

So to produce this one book in financial terms is £425.

Okay, so taking this, how many books would an author have to sell to cover the up front costs?

As an example I will use selling a book on Amazon:

Ranchers Son will be $4.99 which is (at today's exchange rates) £2.88.
The Amazon cut (depending on region, VAT, blah blah) estimated to *even out* at 35% ish.

Which leaves £1.87 for the author.

To cover all kinds of wibbly bits I am rounding that down to £1.80 ish.

SO, to cover my £425 costs I am looking at having to sell 235 or so books.

Let's say, all things being equal that I have to sell 250 books to cover my costs.

That is just me, on my own, and incidentally, I thank every one of you who buys my books and allows me to cover costs and make a profit.

What about a publisher who takes on 6 books a week? Or ten? Multiply the costs, add on the overheads (staff, fixed costs like rent, utilities etc) and the costs on a weekly/monthly basis become more and more.

Which is fine, as long as the authors they publish sell books to cover the costs. Each publisher has the big names, the ones that bring in the money to cover costs, but what about only 1 out of the 6 new releases making money, what if the other five are new authors who may only sell 200 copies of their new book because they aren't established? Of course, these five authors may one day sell enough to cover costs, but maybe that is six months down the line when their brand is known and they issue book 2 and so on.

So, the title, I am part of the problem, what do I mean by that?

I am one of the authors who felt that they had a better handle on their marketing and brand than any publisher did for me. I am one of the writers who decided to go indie. I am one of the authors who have been burned by a publisher who wasn't honourable like Samhain are. I pulled away from publishers, I am still doing that with my remaining titles. I want creative control, I want independence, and it's working for me. It's a brave new world and one I love working in.

KU is part of the problem. I'm not in KU (Amazon is only 67% of my sales, and I couldn't bring myself to cut any of my non Zon using readers off). Still, going exclusively to KU is a good thing for newer authors who don't have the six years I have of building a diverse platform readership. So the KU effect is not my fault... promise... but it is an issue, a big one.

I'm not the only author to go indie. So, as the publishers lose authors who may statistically be more likely to cover costs, where does that leave them? Having to invest in more unknown stories, more unknown authors, ones who can't get seen in the market, and who maybe don't sell, and don't cover costs.

And eventually, new authors will lose out, because they won't have the platform to be seen, and hell, with KU, some authors who made nice sales are feeling the pinch.

What used to be an open market, this Kindle, ePub, PDF, thing where we could have people read our stories... is now becoming more difficult to get into.

I wish I knew the answer. I'm really shocked by Samhain, and saddened. And if any Samhain author needs help to get their books out self published, if that is the way they feel they want to go, then please email me and I am happy to help.

Hugs you all... RJ X

After moving into his new house, Alex Sucre employs the three good-looking Fernando brothers as handymen to maintain his home and garden. He’s immediately attracted to Michael, the youngest, and enjoys watching his muscle-packed body through his study window as he works. After a spate of burglaries in the area, one of Alex’s neighbors accuses the brothers of the thefts. Alex is reluctant to believe that any of them could be responsible, as their business is thriving and they appear to be honest men. But once that seed of doubt has been sown, Alex wonders whether they can be trusted. Should Alex confront Michael with his suspicions and risk destroying their newly formed
relationship?
cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 6

All it took was the clack of the garden gate closing. Alex Sucre’s breath paused, his heart raced. He shot a look from the spreadsheet on his laptop to the digital clock at the top corner of the screen. Mmm… He’s early today. Alex waited in case he’d misheard, but there it was, the gritty roll of the lawn mower on the path down the side of his house. Warm excitement rippled through him—his breath quickened, his heart pounded just that bit faster. He peered through the slats of the Venetian blinds strung across the study window and out into the garden, waiting expectantly. His cock stirred, a familiar and very welcome tingle. Alex was already anticipating what, or who, he was about to see. Several whirrs of the motor’s pull cord rattled the near silence until it caught and the lawn mower burst into life, filling the quiet of the house. Alex leaned forward, adjusting the blinds, ready to ogle his gardener as he strode across the lawn. In his eagerness, Alex scattered papers onto the wooden floor. Damn it! He scooped them up and slapped them back down by his keyboard. Alex moved beside his desk, to one side of the window, not wanting to be caught snooping already. Come on. Come on. Hurry up!

"Ahhhh… A short and sweet book to zap your endorphins after reading a long, angsty book. Or as I like to call them: Bathtub Books! A Bathtub Book is a shorter book that is perfect to read in the tub, before the water gets cold. The Handyman Can is the perfect length and sweetness level to let you relax and enjoy. Hunky handymen, sweet make out sessions and a bonus hot sex scene make this a win for me. Enjoy Alex and Michael and the off-the-charts cover-hotness!"

"The Handyman Can was a wonderful surprise. For a story only 38 pages long it was surprisingly full of recognisable characters and gripping storyline. I won’t go into the details of the story; the blurb tells you all you need to know. I will say that I got to know both Alex and Michael rather well as the story progressed and especially Michael charmed his way into my heart. I also loved Alex’s neighbours. They were an interesting, varied and recognisable bunch of people, just as you would expect in any neighbourhood.
I enjoyed the simmering heat when the story starts and the way it slowly built up to the steaming finale after all issues have been resolved. And I liked that this story provided more than ‘just’ a steamy romance; we’re also given the opportunity to enjoy a mystery with an action packed conclusion. Quite an achievement, considering the length of this story. Having said all of that, I did have one or two reservations as well. Once or twice Alex came across as somewhat condescending in the way he thought about Michael and his brothers. As much as it is clear he is head over heals in love with his handyman, Alex’s thoughts made me a bit uncomfortable at times and somewhat worried about their future as a couple. My second reservation is connected to the first one; Alec was very quick to have doubts about the three brothers even if he doesn’t voice them to Michael. These were minor issues though. Overall the obvious and very hot attraction between these two men took centre stage and kept me rooting for them even when it seemed as if it might all be falling apart before it had even had a chance to begin. Long story short: The Handyman Can is a hot, fast paced and well plotted story and as a result a thoroughly enjoyable quick read. If you find yourself with a spare hour on your hands I recommend this story whole-heartedly."

Lily G. Blunt writes contemporary gay erotic romance. She loves to explore the relationship between two men and the intensity of their physical and emotional attraction. Angst often features in her stories as she feels this demonstrates the depth of the men's feelings for each other. Lily is forever writing imaginary scenes and plots in her head, but only a few ever make it to the page--there never seems to be enough hours in the day despite having left the teaching profession to concentrate on her writing!
Lily discovered the wonderful world of m/m romance novels five years ago via fan fiction and went on to write stories in her spare time. With the encouragement of her friends and readers she decided to publish some of her work. Lily subsequently self-published several stories via Amazon. She later published short stories with Torquere Press and Wayward Ink Publishing. Lily is excited about joining Pride Publishing for her latest release, The Handyman Can. Lily is an avid supporter of GLBTQ rights and advocates equality for all. She was recently a steward for Pride in London. The Hollywood Bad Boy - Moments

The Hollywood Bad Boy - Moments

The Hollywood Bad Boy

I’ve always been fascinated by the Hollywood bad boys. Robert Downey Junior was the inspiration for a story centered around one such bad boy, Jacob Riley, who is stuck in B movies but has the money for the drinking and the drugs and the wild times.

I often think when you have a child actor the pressure on them is equally as big as the sudden fame and notoriety that they achive at a young age. Jacob has the fame, he has the money and he has no solid foundation in his life to be able to enjoy any of it without pushing to excess.

I love Hollywood and the glitz and the glamour and there is nothing better than a story of someone who has turned their lives around after addiction.

Ethan Myers is a character inspired by a story I read about a man setting up a literacy program in LA. He's the complete opposite to Jacob. He works hard for what he has, and he's living on the breadline while trying to help other people. Can he be the last chance that Jacob needs? And can he make this Hollywood bad boy turn good?

Robert Downey Junior was given a lot of second chances and it seems the last one kind of stuck. I’d like to think that the ‘last chance’ given to Jacob in Moments will stick for him, and that in becoming a better man he and Ethan can have a wonderful happy ever after.

Moments

An actor on possession charges, hell bent on destroying his own life meets a man who quietly works to make his world better. Can Jacob Riley be saved?

Jacob Riley, star of the time traveling TV series End Game, is a typical Hollywood former child star with issues. He has already had prison time and at the age of 26 has been arrested again. Jacob works his time as a general handyman at an education center in the run down area of L.A. A part of the city that is in the middle of regeneration. It is a short sharp shock for the boy-man who had an easy life.

Ethan Myers is the owner and manager of 'Mac’s', providing teaching and learning to local low income families.

Jacob hates his jailor Ethan; Ethan loses his cool whenever Jacob aims for an easy ride. He has no respect for the lack of substance in his 'guest'.

Sparks fly when attraction becomes something they can’t fight and their relationship grows against a background of disenfranchised street gang members, arson, the Oscars, and despite their own prejudices.

Kissing Alex

Martial arts expert Lewis is the kind of bodyguard who slips under most people’s radar. Quiet, reserved, but constantly on alert, he’ll do his job, keep his charges safe, then relax by reading Shakespeare in his spare time.

When he’s given a case involving a spoiled celebrity singer, Lewis isn’t all that impressed. The job is nothing but babysitting a pretty boy, and he’s used to diplomatic postings with depth and challenge. What could he possibly have in common with the man he’s being forced to look after?

Alex became the envy of many when he and his fellow bandmates won second place in a huge TV talent show. He has more money than he knows what to do with, no life goals, an ex-boyfriend selling a sex tape and now, someone who wants him dead, or at the very least maimed.

Can Lewis keep Alex safe, even when things usually in his control go to hell? Is running to a remote Scottish island the only way for them to stay alive?

Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Series

Nora Roberts' Chesapeake Series

When I am asked about my favourite romance stories I always point to Nora Roberts and her amazing Chesapeake series. The stories of Cameron, Ethan and Philip, with Seth in book 4, have adventure, intrigue, love, lust and the most amazing portrait of a family not related by blood.

Amazing, and highly recommended.

The covers I have found, are the ones I had on my versions of the paperback. :)

Ask RJ: Where should a reader start

Ask RJ: Where should a reader start

Elin Gregory asked: If a brand new shiny first time m/m reader approached you and asked, which of your back list would you suggest they start with as R J Scott entry level fiction?

I get this question a lot (which I am thankful for - it's nice to know people want to try my writing!). I never know what to say. It seems to be as daunting for me to choose one as it is for a potential reader.

My biggest selling series books are the Texas series, the Bodyguards series, the Montana series, The Sanctuary series. All of them are different. Texas and Montan have strong family stories, Bodyguards and Sanctuary are action books.

When it comes to standalone one off books then The Christmas Throwaway, Deefur Dog and The Decisions We Make, are all popular.

I do like writing Christmas stories - I have quite a few of them!

What all my stories have in common is romance, and a HEA!

Charges to receive our money - a post for authors

So, something happened this week.

If you are here as a reader you may want to skip this post, but if you are an author it may be worth checking your royalty statements very carefully.

For one reason or another, too complicated to go into, hubs was entering data from a publisher onto our accounts this week. The amounts on the reports didn't match what we received, and red flags immediately flew.

This is what happened with Silver and as soon as money becomes an issue I am hot on sorting the issue out.

So I counted up the money that we were missing, it came to around $44, which, lets face it, isn't a HUGE pile of money. But, given how I price my books, this equals 20 odd books that I haven't received money for.

I immediately contacted the publisher, and I am not here to point fingers at who it was, but their response was swift and considered - I respected them for that at least.

Apparently, the difference was because we were in the UK, and they are in *another* country and that we were being charged the cost of *sending us the money*. Apparently we, the authors, carry the costs of transferring money. The implication being that is the *cost of doing business with an overseas publisher*.

Uhm. No.

I signed a contract with the publisher to receive 50% of income. My understanding is that they were to keep 50% of money I made to cover art, editing, etc, with the rest being *their profit*.

Suddenly, with the fees, this is becoming 48%. WTF. That is MY money that is being lost.

The publisher agreed to refund the fees, but is adamant that *this is the way it is done*. I disagreed and they took my comments on board but I am not sure it would change anything in the way they work. As I said to them, nowhere in the contract does it state anything about fees for conversion from their currency to UK pounds, or about any fees actually. I expect the 50% of the money you make from me, not 50% less fees.

I pointed out that I wasn't trying to be difficult, but that they were the only publisher I have ever worked with that did this.

I believe it's an apalling practice to take fees out of money I earned. Also, as a publisher (Love Lane Books), with several overseas authors, we wouldn't dream of them having to take a cut into their earnings for fees.

Their argument that I *chose* to work with an overseas publisher is one that does not fly with me. This is an international business, not an insular country one. Needless to say, not only am I apalled, but I am not writing for the publisher again.

Has this happened to you?

“Come sta Morgan?”

L’espressione di Nik mutò all’istante.

“Sai dove verremo assegnati?”

“Adam…” cominciò a dire Jake.

Jake controllò i suoi appunti.

“No…”

“Ne dubito,” sbottò Adam, salvo pentirsi all’istante di aver aperto bocca.

“Probabilmente hai ragione,” ammise Jake.

E io so quanto ti devo…”
