Childhood Christmas Memories

Childhood Christmas Memories

It's nearly time to take down the tree and pack away the ornaments for another year, there's always a huge build up to Christmas then it seems to fly by...

Crepe Paper always brings back memories. A couple days before Christmas mum and dad would remove all the ornaments and so on from our large sideboard and then would put down swathes of this soft crinkly paper in all different colours. Then on top of that would go Christmas nuts and sweets and some decorations. This to a young kid was Christmas heaven!

When we woke up in the morning we would have a pillow case at the end of the bed, normally with a Rupert annual and bits and pieces from Avon like talc (Brits will get that). We still do this for our kids and even more special is that Matt still believes in Santa.

Christmas TV was a highpoint in our house when I was a kid, not so much now. We only had a couple of TV channels and there was always the afternoon film (after the Queen’s speech). I remember the excitement when one of the channels showed Star Wars. Then there was Morecombe and Wise, The Bond film, and The Coronation Street Christmas episode. Oh and which Brit here recalls Angie being served the divorce papers by Den? ROFL.

What is your best Christmas memory from childhood?

The cop lifted the mask with shaky fingers. “I like firefighters,” he whispered and coughed.

“Sorry?” Max leaned in to hear him over the noise and chaos outside the rig.

“Firefighters… I can never find a gay one.”

Well, I like cops, Max thought.

It seems fitting to have today's snippet from The Christmas Throwaway...

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

"I..." Zach stopped, assessing the lies he could spin, thinking of the stories he had used to persuade people to leave him alone. Nothing crystallized as right for this moment in time. There was something about this cop, a man who seemed not much older than he was, an officer who wasn't a city cop, but a small town cop. He wouldn't be part of the system the same way as the cops in the city who said he should go home. I don't have a home. Maybe...maybe he should tell him the truth.

Christmas is a time for giving - what do you do when no one gives a damn?

For Zachary Weston Christmas means sleeping on a churchyard bench in the freezing snow with nothing better in his future. Thrown out of his home for being gay, he is left without money or, it seems, anywhere to go. Until a stranger shows him that some people do give a lot more than a damn.

Ben Hamilton is a rookie cop in his small home town. He finds a young throwaway, fresh from the city, sleeping on a bench in the churchyard on a snowy Christmas Eve. Can he be the one to give Zachary his own Christmas miracle?

Feature Friday - Charlie Cochrane - Writing a Mystery

Feature Friday - Charlie Cochrane - Writing a Mystery

Welcome to Charlie Cochrane, today's guest for Feature Friday, Charlie is here to talk about writing a mystery novel, take it away Charlie...

How do you create suspense in your stories?

There are all the well-known techniquey things to draw on - shorter sentences, fast paced action, cutting down on description etc - but I think in the end it comes down to good plotting and good writing. I've just read two of the British Library series of classic mysteries and you couldn't have had two better examples of what to do and what not. One of them was so slow, even in the supposedly tense bits, because the author had the habit of never saying something once when he could say it four times. The other was really gripping, with a great climax where the reader was allowed to get into the head of the person-you-thought-was-the-killer-but-actually-wasn't and depicting their emotions and muddled thoughts.

Do you start with the crime/mystery then work the story around it or do you wing it?

Wing it, wing it, wing it. You see, when I write a mystery it's like I'm watching the story unfold on the television or hearing it on the radio. In half hour instalments, maybe, each of which corresponds to a chapter or two. I see the body being found, the characters being introduced, the clues lining up, and as I follow all of this I start to wonder who might have done it. This may sound totally ludicrous, but it works for me.

What are the ethics of writing historical figures?

In my humble opinion (as they say), I believe you have to make them act in line with what is known of their character. I know in historical fiction any and everyone is seen as fair game, so you can have the fictional Horatio Hornblower rubbing shoulders with real life admirals like Pellew or Nelson, which is fine so long as they do what the real Pellew and Nelson would have done. However, particularly in fanfiction, I've seen both of these gents acting in a way that would be called libellous if it were written about a living person. Frankly, it can be insulting. (Ooh, I got all cross there.)

In fiction anything is fair game, do you like finding obscure ways of bumping people off?

In a word, no. I'm not a writer whose mysteries focus on clever methods of despatch or highly complicated denouements. I'm more interested in the why someone was killed than the how, so my victims tend to be bludgeoned or poisoned or something straightforward, leaving the reader's mind uncluttered so they can concentrate on the characters and their motivations.

Have you ever had to go back and *hide the keys*? (stealing cues from Bill & Ted)

To my shame, I confess I had to look up that reference. If you mean do I have to go back through the manuscript when writing to plant clues/red herrings, then yes, I do sometimes, but it's a risky business. If you don't have a light touch and a sure hand, it can scream "Look! Look! Clue!" Funny thing is that usually the references I need are in the story already, so when I go back for a first review I'm amazed at how things hang together. Like my sub-conscious has been far more effective than I have at subtly seeding the story with what I'd need.

What part of the process do you find the hardest?

Writing sex scenes. Which is why it's great writing the Lindenshaw series and the recent Cambridge Fellows novellas, all of which are fade to black.

Reviews

Rainbow Books Reviews  -  "...This is a great Christmas story, from the slow build of a romantic relationship that is long overdue, through some very angsty territory, all the way to lives being threatened, and a perfectly adorable ending. And even though Christmas isn’t really at the heart of the story, Chris and Daniel's love is the focus, it is a perfect example of the Christmas spirit. Of course, the setting of New York in December and January may have something to do with it. Two of my favorite scenes ere the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller center and the two guys going ice skating. The latter was hilarious! ..."

Hump Day Interview - Charlie Cochet

Hump Day Interview - Charlie Cochet

Happy Hump Day! Today it's Charlie Cochet in the Hot Seat, welcome Charlie...

What book/s are you reading at present?

I’m reading Aimee Nicole Walker’s A Dye Hard Holiday. I absolutely ADORE the Curl Up and Dye Mysteries! I’m also reading Lucy Lennox’s A Very Marian Christmas, book 7 in another fave series of mine, the Made Marian series.

What part of writing a book comes the hardest for you?

The first 20% of the book is always the hardest for me because that’s where I know if everything I plotted out is going to work. It’s also what takes the most patience, because I want to jump right into the romance, but I know I need to write that buildup first. We need the development, the building of the foundation before we can get into the relationship.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

Um, probably about 15 to 20? All in various stages of completion. Only a handful of those I intend to get published.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I tend to plot and work to an outline, though often things deviate from the outline. Sometimes it’s a very rough outline, and there are rare occasions when I just write and see where the characters take me.

How do you keep characters consistent through a story? Do you write out extensive character bibles?

If it’s a big series like the THIRDS, I keep notes and spreadsheets on character traits I’m likely to need to refer back to. I have someone who’s working on a huge story bible for me for the THIRDS that will include more than I’ve ever had the time to put together. For character consistency in behavior, I work out what a character is like before I start writing, and as I write they continue to grow and develop so it’s important to pay attention and make sure as the story continues that you’re staying true to your character.

There were no kittens, I made those up, and the spider story. The word spider came about because when I’d been talking to my mom about Marcus and the kittens, a tiny spider had crawled over my notes.

I closed the notebook in which I had the names of five kittens with their various characteristics listed.

Mom wanted to meet Marcus, any night, any lunch, anytime.

Which sucked big hairy balls.

Because that was another thing I had made up.

There was no Marcus either.

Review Roundup!

Review Roundup!

It's been a busy few weeks with 3 new releases, here's a roundup of some of the reviews so far...

Texas Gift (Texas #8)

Scattered Thoughts & Rogue Words - "Texas Gift is like sitting down on a couch with your family with their family albums and going through it with them as they tell you the stories from each picture, pointing out every loving detail with laughter, some sniffles and oh, so much joy. It fills your heart with happiness and a warm glow because you’ve made such a connection with these men and their family over the course of these stories that they feel real and part of you.
Now as RJ Scott closes the final chapter on Texas we get to see their whole story…what an amazing journey, what a marvelous gift. You’ve left me smiling and full of heartwarming memories. I’ll miss you."

Dog-Eared Daydreams - "Aside from the immediate Campbell-Hayes family, it was great catching up with everyone else who's part of the the extended family--from their respective parents, siblings, siblings-in-law, and nieces and nephews to those who have made the Double D Ranch their home as well and have managed to find love and peace along the way. I'm not entirely sure if this eighth and latest book spells the end for the Texas series, though I wouldn't be surprised since this had a feeling of poignancy to it. Whether Texas Gift is it for the Campbell-Hayeses, it's been a wonderful ride, with Riley and Jack not riding off into the sunset but watching every single one together from the D."

Embracing My Crazy "What I found most intriguing about this trip down the future is that through it all, Jack and Riley are still Jack and Riley, and we still love them as much as we ever had from the start. Although the two men have grown in their love for one another, they are still recognizable to the reader as the same men we fell in love with in book one.Another reason I loved and hated--not really, but you know what I mean--about this book is that with each chapter, there is a purposeful completion that lets us know its all ending. I felt the doors closing, sort of the way one feels when they're saying goodby to a loved one. You know its coming, you know its the end, you don't want to say goodbye, but you're so grateful you had a chance to be part of it all. That was what this last installment of the Heart of Texas series did for me. It allowed me to love them one last time, and say goodbye in a meaningful way to two men who allowed me to witness their love. Book 8 is truly a gift I am so grateful to have been given."

Deep Edge (Harrisburg Railers #3) with V.L. Locey

Scattered Thoughts & Rogue Words - "...while you could think this is just an opposites attract story, it also includes much deeper, more serious layers that speak to addictions, recovery, and therapy. And does so in a realistic and even gritty manner at times. For tackling all that, plus the romance, and the continuing overall series arc and pulling them off to a grand effect? Deep Edge (Harrisburg Railers #3) by RJ Scott & VL Locey is a story that’s close to perfect. Truly with each story this series just keeps getting better and better."

Padme's Library - "Truth is, there is so many aspects of this story(and series) that made me smile, laugh, cry, frankly pretty much every emotion out there. I know I use the words a lot in my reviews but it doesn't make them any less true, Deep Edge will warm your heart from page one till the end.
They may not be characters you would meet every day but Scott and Locey present Dieter and Trent in a way that if you ran into them in the grocery store or the gas station you wouldn't look twice. In my opinion, creating characters that are definitely original and yet have that "every day" element to them takes talent and that is what you will find within the pages of Deep Edge and the Harrisburg Railers: talent and plenty of heart."

My Fiction Nook - "I loved Trent and Dieter’s story and as a couple they worked really, really well for me and while I know that the next book’s a new pairing…it’s Stan the big, adorable, teddy bear Russian Goalie for the Railers and I’m totally on board for Stan’s story and yes, I do have my fingers crossed for a peek or two at Trent and Dieter…these two worked hard for their HEA and I’d love to see more of these two.
This series just keeps getting better and better for me and I’m definitely looking forward to whatever comes next for the men of the Harrrisburg Railers and their partners…now, if I could just get my hands on a Railer’s hockey jersey…Go Railers!!!"

Love Happens Anyway

The Novel Approach - "This short novel is the pinnacle of what a love story can be—sweet and sentimental, heartwarming and uplifting, with a touch of internal conflict for the couple to overcome without things tipping over into hysterics and melodrama. Add fake boyfriends to that—one of my favorite tropes—as well as an opposites attract element, and you have the heart and soul of romance in a smile inducing tale of two men who accidentally fall in love right in the midst of a business transaction.Family and friendship each play their roles in this book as well, and they do so effectively, adding depth and layers to both the narrative and the characters. Love Happens Anyway is a blatant play on the heartstrings, and makes no apologies for it. I loved it, believed in Derek and Luke’s happily-ever-after, and appreciated the emotional resonance woven throughout the story. This one’s an absolute keeper for future holiday re-reading."

Scattered Thoughts & Rogue Words - "...what starts off as a familiar romantic storyline, RJ Scott deepens it, adding touch of poignancy and reality to a lovely heartwarming romance. I loved the couple and the family and friends that surrounded them. The holidays are a wonderful time to curl up in your favorite spot and read some wonderful holiday romances. Be sure to put Love Happens Anyway by RJ Scott on your list to read this holiday season."

My Fiction Nook - "Love Happens Anyway’ is an enchanting holiday story and while a lot of the issues stem from miscommunication it’s not intentional or surrounded by any over the top angst or drama and the icing on the Christmas cake for me in all of this was the ending…I loved the ending. It was sweet and filled with the joy of the holidays…definitely recommended for anyone wanting a sweet holiday story filled with fun, cheer and two sexy men who make the holiday just that much brighter."

Hump Day Interview - Jamie Fessenden

Hump Day Interview - Jamie Fessenden

This week it's Jamie Fessenden's turn in the Hump Day Hot Seat, welcome Jamie...

What was the last gift you gave someone?

My husband hates receiving gifts, but this year he came home on our anniversary and wished me a happy anniversary, and I'd completely forgotten! I felt terrible, so the next night, I surprised him with something he really needed: a set of gunmetal-finish iron gaming dice. Yes. We are that geeky.

Do you have a character in your head that you have yet to write a story for?

Several. One that I've been wanting to write since college is an android who gets cross-wired with another android, so he can sense what the other will think and feel in different circumstances. This has the side-effect of making him care about another being for the first time since his creation.

Do you take a break from a first draft to get distance from it, dive right into editing, or edit as you write?

I edit as I write, or I find myself stuck. If I don't feel that the earlier parts are flowing smoothly, I can't go on. So I start the day by tweaking what I've written, the move on, sometimes going back to adjust things. By the time I reach the end of a novel, it's fairly polished. Not perfect, as my editor will testify, but in fairly good shape.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I just went back and counted. I have twenty-two stories in progress, at the moment. Some are nearly done. Some may never be completed. But I keep them all in DropBox, and drag old ones when new ones are finished. And of course I'm adding to it all the time. I've never had trouble coming up with ideas (*knock on wood*). My problem has always been finishing.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

It's hard to say how long, because usually I decide to write about things I've been interested in for a while, so I've already read several books on the subject. I tend to start writing, and research as I need to learn things. Sometimes this slows me down, but often I'll realize that, say, the exact flavor and texture of Icelandic "thunder bread" isn't critical to the scene, so I'll bookmark it with a note in Word and move on to write the rest of the scene. Sometimes, as I've learned more about something, it makes it necessary to rework the scene. I had to rewrite the airport scene in A Viking for Yule three times, as I looked at maps of the airport and spoke with a friend who'd been through it. Another point: Google Maps is your friend. It's amazing what you can learn about the layout and look of a strange location through Street View.

For your chance to win A Cop For Christmas, answer this question...what's your favourite thing about the festive season?

After Sam's grandfather nearly died in a blizzard one year ago, Sam has panic attacks in snow storms. So where does his friend Jackie propose they spend the holidays, as the last stop on their trip around the world?

Iceland. Of course.

But there's more in Iceland than snow. When Arnar, a handsome Icelandic man, offers to escort Sam on a several-day tour of the beautiful countryside, they soon find themselves drawn to each other. But Arnar is firmly rooted in his native soil, and Sam has to return to the US in a week to care for his ailing grandfather.

Suddenly, yule can’t last nearly long enough.

NOTE: Though this novel includes characters from "A Cop for Christmas," it is a standalone adventure. It isn’t necessary to read "A Cop for Christmas" first.

Jamie Fessenden is an author of gay fiction in many genres. Most involve romance, because he believes everyone deserves to find love, but after that anything goes: contemporary, science fiction, historical, paranormal, mystery, or whatever else strikes his fantasy.

Jamie set out to be a writer in junior high school. He published a couple short pieces in his high school’s literary magazine and had another story place in the top 100 in a national contest, but it wasn’t until he met his partner, Erich, almost twenty years later, that he began writing again in earnest. With Erich alternately inspiring and goading him, Jamie wrote several screenplays and directed a few of them as micro-budget independent films. He then began writing novels and published his first novella in 2010.

After nine years together, Jamie and Erich have married and purchased a house together in the wilds of Raymond, New Hampshire, where there are no street lights, turkeys and deer wander through their yard, and coyotes serenade them on a nightly basis.

Jamie recently left his “day job” as a tech support analyst to be a full-time writer.
