Guest Post inc. Giveaway - Shane Morton

Hello to all of you RJ Scott readers! My new book, The Year of the Cock was one of the most liberating experiences I have ever had writing. I knew the story that I wanted to tell but I knew that I wanted to tell it in a more experimental fashion. I am very happy with the choices that I eventually made.

I love gossip. I don’t really like to tell it, because I have gotten myself in trouble a time or two… Haven’t we all? But I do like to listen to the juicy details of someone else’s life. My friends know this and love to share with me! This story is told as if someone is giving you tidbits of gossip and secrets as they let you in on their thoughts and feeling of what is happening to their best friend, Jon. I even use text messaging, blogs, emails, diary entries, and psychologist transcripts to move the action forward. I really enjoyed writing the chapters that used the blog especially.

The character of Pierre is one I would really love to explore further. I think that he needs his own book someday. He is a pornstar/escort and writes a blog he has named ‘The Libertine Love Letters’. I found the voice of his character quickly and it really resonated with me. This man who understands what he has to offer, in both a sexual and emotional way, with no pretense or fear jumped off of the page as I wrote him. His hashtag use completely caught me off guard. I love it when a character lets me know where he is going and demands to be heard. It’s one of the ways that I know he is interesting, real and honest. #SexualPsychic was one of my favorites!

I hope that you enjoy the book and remember that 2017 is the Year of the Cock!

XOXO Shane (If you got any good gossip… let me know!)

Jon seems to have it all. He is a social butterfly that always has a place to go, things to do, and people to constantly surround him. The one thing he's missing is someone to truly love. How can he love someone else when he doesn't like the person staring back at him in the mirror?

He is that magical being that no one chooses to be, the third wheel. He has filled his life with happy couples, in various states of married bliss, that fills the hole in his heart with the acceptance and understanding he secretly craves.

Told by the people who know him best, The Year Of The Cock, is a year in the growth of their best friend, Jon. Can he learn to love, to open himself up to the messy truth of relationships? Will he finally become the person he has tried to repress his entire adult life or will the year-end with him stuck in the status quo of his gay bachelorhood?

Guest Post - N.R. Walker on Cowboys!

A huge thank you to RJ for having me!

Today’s chat is all about cowboys!!! And who doesn’t love cowboys?? My series, RED DIRT HEART, is set in the Outback of Australia in a vast desert of red dirt. Sutton Station (cattle farms, or ranches, are called stations in Australia) is a whopping 2.58 million acres, which isn’t too uncommon in central Australia. I actually based Sutton Station off a working station in the Northern Territory of Australia. Lucy Creek Station is a real place, three hours from the nearest town in the middle of the desert. Real people live and work there, running successful cattle production.

You can see Lucy Creek on Google Maps. Make sure you have it on Satellite settings so you can see the red, red dirt!

My characters, Charlie Sutton and Travis Craig, not only have issues with farming desert sand in a new millennium, but they also have small-town minds to deal with. Being a farmer in the Outback is hard enough, but being a gay farmer makes it so much harder.

Charlie was born and bred in the desert, and is resigned to being alone forever. Travis, an agronomy student from America, falls in love with the desert the second he arrives, and he changes Charlie’s life in ways he never dreamed possible.

The Red Dirt Heart Series consists of four full length novels, one Christmas short story, and a short crossover story with my Imago series.

Keira Andrews - The Chimera Affair

Thanks to RJ for having me today! I have a confession.

I’m seriously considering buying this pen. Who needs Q and his gadgets when we can order our very own spy pen online? Yes, I realize it will probably break after a week. And no, I don’t really have anything exciting to secretly film. My spy pen recordings would be so boring. But you never know! It might come in handy some day when a dashing operative sweeps me up in his web of intrigue.

What? It could happen.

Okay, okay, it won’t happen, but since I was a girl I’ve always been fascinated by spies, from Harriet the Spy to my dad’s James Bond movies. Connery or Moore – I loved them all. Scarecrow and Mrs. King was my favourite TV show (Bruce Boxleitner was so dreamy to this 10-year-old!), and I’ve always adored stories about normal people caught up in adventure and espionage.

It was a real pleasure to create Kyle and Sebastian and my own universe of sexy spies in The Chimera Affair. I tried to keep it as realistic as possible while still throwing in some handy gadgets, which in today’s world of smartphones are really not farfetched at all!

The Book

His mission was seduction—not falling in love.

When young Sebastian Brambani meets a sexy and exciting older man, he’s easily seduced. But for spy Kyle Grant, it’s all business. Sebastian is simply a pawn in Kyle’s mission to acquire a dangerous chemical weapon from Sebastian’s criminal father. Kyle’s life is his work for a shadowy international agency protecting the world from evil, and he can’t worry about what will happen to Sebastian when the job is done.

Sebastian’s unwitting role in Kyle’s plan is the last straw for his ruthless father, who has been embarrassed by his gay son for the last time. But when Kyle discovers Sebastian could be the key to finding the deadly Chimera, he rescues him from his father's hitman and fights to keep him alive. Can a hardened spy and naïve college student take down a criminal kingpin, stay one step ahead of the killers on their trail—and fight the scorching attraction between them?

This gay romance from Keira Andrews features sexy spies, an age difference, a sheltered and passionate virgin, action and adventure, and of course a happy ending.

BONUS STORY INCLUDED: The Argentine Seduction, a sequel for Kyle and Sebastian featuring unexpected jealousy, protectiveness, and a dangerous mission in the simmering heat of Buenos Aires. (And of course a happy ending!)

About Keira

After writing for years yet never really finding the right inspiration, Keira discovered her voice in gay romance, which has become a passion. She writes contemporary, historical, paranormal, and fantasy fiction, and—although she loves delicious angst along the way—Keira firmly believes in happy endings. For as Oscar Wilde once said, “The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means.”

Guest Post - Kat Mizera

I spent most of my career as a sports and entertainment journalist, but there is no doubt I was a closet romance novelist too. I wrote the first one in 1984, not long after I saw the cover of the first Bon Jovi album. It came out in January of that year, and in May I got a job at the local record store. I found the album in the play list stack beneath the register and the moment I saw it, my first rock star romance was born. I still have it—Jonas and Bianca’s story—hand-written in a notebook. That notebook is in a box—one of many literally in the closet—that contains dozens of stories; most hand-written, some unfinished, all a dichotomy of thoughts and hopes and dreams.

In 2015, while recovering from surgery, an author friend of mine sat me down and gave it to me straight: “What are you waiting for? DO IT! Why do you hide all your stories? Finish something, get it edited and publish it. Amazon makes it so easy…”

I was terrified, but I knew she was right, so I did it. My Las Vegas Sidewinders hockey series came out in April 2016, three books, a week apart. And they sold. I couldn’t believe it. People wanted to read my stuff! It was exciting and scary and fun. Books four and five followed, and then a holiday novella. Amazingly, they were still selling. I wasn’t making any best seller lists, but I was living my dream and my creativity was in high gear. I decided to do a spinoff, something a little darker and edgier and more erotic. I wrote the first book, Salvation’s Inferno, and got started on the second one. It was supposed to be a ménage, but that didn’t happen. In fact, the characters literally had minds of their own and took me down a completely different path: M/M. Male/Male. I’d never written it before, never thought about it before and certainly didn’t plan it.

Viggo and Jamie, two rough-and-tumble hockey players, fell in love so hard, so fast, I wrote nearly 90,000 words in 11 days. I couldn’t stop—I was pulled back to the keyboard the moment I woke up in the morning and stayed there until I absolutely had to sleep or eat or shower. When the first draft was done, I was flabbergasted. What had I done? This wasn’t the plan. This wasn’t the right book…
That’s when it got interesting. The underlying theme for the entire Inferno series, from the get-go, was love and acceptance. The first book focused on the particular kinks of the two main characters and the heroine’s initial reluctance to accept it, while the next book was supposed to be about the struggles of ménage, where three people find permanent love together. Except it wasn’t and they didn’t. Two bisexual men fell in love and went through a totally different ordeal. I’ve seen parts of what they go through in real life with friends—not specifically two bisexual men, but men and women who fell into the spectrum of the LGBTQ community. I’ve watched their struggles and their pain has stayed with me. When I went back and re-read Viggo and Jamie’s story—Temptation’s Inferno—I realized that I’d subconsciously put in my own version of these real-life stories while keeping to the theme of the series.

It became my favorite book, the one I’m most proud of as an author. It took me out of my comfort zone as a writer, and became so much more than just another romance. It was intense, angst-y (something I typically avoid), heartfelt and very, very raw. I tackled real-life issues from the LGBTQ community that many authors simply want to avoid because they’re hard. Hard to talk about, hard to write about, but ultimately, the hardest part would be having to live through them. Temptation’s Inferno touches upon some of the many obstacles men and women who are LGBTQ must overcome—but with a happily-ever-after I hope leaves readers feeling better about the world. Even though it’s fiction, it meant a lot to make it into something of a statement about love and acceptance.

I don’t know if I’ll write more like this. I’ve had a lot of emails and messages from readers asking for more of Jamie and Viggo, and people were so excited to see them in the next book, Redemption’s Inferno, even though that was really Emilie and Chains’ story. So I’m thinking about a Jamie & Viggo novella, but I want it to happen organically, the same way their original story did. I do have a few ideas, though… I’m just not telling yet!

In the meantime, I’m departing from both sports romance and dark romance, heading into general contemporary romance with a spin. Romancing Greece is my next project and I have the first three books plotted out, with the first one almost complete and set for release in late July. Each book will take place in a different city in Greece, and will be filled with tidbits of the local culture, food, architecture and more. Since I’m half-Greek and spend a lot of time there, I thought it would be fun to bring my mother’s heritage into some of my books. I’ve changed the name of the first one three times already, but it’s taking place in Athens and Las Vegas (since Vegas is a recurring theme in all my books).

The seventh book in my Sidewinders series is coming this fall, and will feature Vladimir and Rachel. Another hunky Russian, a movie star (who used to date one of his teammates) and a quirky set of new (to readers) hockey players and supporting characters who will hopefully breathe new life into the series. There’s also a spin-off novella that will be in a March of Dimes charity anthology later this year, but I don’t have a release date yet (featuring Drake’s older sister Mack and a new guy named Rob). So there’s a lot going on and it’s really, really exciting. I’m considering a whole new hockey series, this team set in Anchorage, Alaska, and a rock star serial that’s already over 400,000 words! Sometimes there isn’t enough digital paper for all the stories in my head—or the time to write them!

I’m excited to bring my stories to you and I hope you’re just as excited to read them! If you’d like to find out what’s coming and catch up with what I’m doing, you can subscribe to my newsletter at www.katmizera.com

I just started a new group for my readers—I’ll be doing special contests, Q&A’s with industry colleagues like photographers and models, have guest authors stopping by and more! So join the group and hang out with my Vegas Vixens!

The Book

Two men. One threesome. Zero expectations.

Jamie Teller has had a rough year. After being blackmailed by a teammate, weathering a sex scandal, and being traded to a team on the other side of the continent, he’s overwhelmed and looking for a distraction. A sexy threesome with his burly roommate and his wife wasn’t expected--neither is his sudden attraction to a guy.

Viggo Sjoberg has been openly bisexual since he was 17, but he’d always assumed he would settle down with a woman. When he’s surprised with news he has a child from a past fling, he jumps headfirst into marriage and fatherhood, but his new wife isn't what she appeared to be. Adding to Viggo’s confusion are the feelings aroused by his seemingly straight roommate, Jamie.

When Jamie moves thousands of miles away, Viggo tells himself it’s over. Until a life-changing event puts the two men on a collision course. Suddenly, Jamie needs Viggo—badly—and Viggo is prepared to do whatever it takes to help. Even if it means he has to give up everything he always thought he wanted.

Author’s Note: This series is somewhat darker than my other books. Although they are all HEA’s, there are elements of BDSM, ménage, hate crimes, vigilante justice and LGBTQ relationships throughout the series. If you’re concerned about trigger warnings, this may not be the series for you.

Kat Mizera is a South Florida native. Born in Miami Beach with a healthy dose of wanderlust, she's called Los Angeles, Long Island, upstate New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Atlanta home. She's never been able to pick which locale is her favorite, but if pressed, she’d probably choose the west coast.

A typical suburban PTA mom, Kat has a wonderful, supportive husband (Kevin) and two amazing boys (Nick and Max). When she's not writing, she's either scrapbooking or indulging in her second love (after writing) – traveling. Greece is one of her favorite places in the world. She loves that Athens is a big city with a small-town feel. The food, beaches and culture keep her going back as often as possible. She hopes to retire there one day so she can spend her days writing books on the beach.

Kat has been a working freelance writer for nearly 30 years. She sold her first article--a review of a rock concert--for $10 in 1985. Since then she's been an entertainment journalist (working with bands like Saigon Kick, Bangalore Choir and Julliet), waitress, bartender, legal assistant, food critic, magazine editor, substitute teacher, and freelance writer. She also spent time working as a record store manager in Ft. Lauderdale and at A & M Records in Los Angeles.

As you can guess from her series, the Las Vegas Sidewinders, Kat loves hockey. She is a retired freelance hockey writer, covering her favorite team, the Florida Panthers, and any other teams that had an interesting story. Now she writes novels full-time: sexy, romantic fiction that she hopes makes you as happy as it makes her. There's something enticing about hockey players and romance...

Excerpt:

Fuck they found him and it was all Christian’s fault. If he hadn’t come, Elliot would have been long gone.
“Go to your room,” Christian ordered.
“What the hell? I know how to take care of myself.” Maybe not against trained killers, but it was the principle of everything.
As he glared at Christian, something hit the wall behind his head. There was a slight sting making Elliot touch his ear, only to have the tips of his fingers come back bloody. One second he was staring at the blood on his fingers, the next his body was being pulled to the floor. The weight of Christian’s much heavier frame covering his as their assailant shot off a few more rounds.
“I’m going to distract him. I want you to crawl to the other side of the room, closer to the kitchen.” Christian whispered into his ear, and if his treacherous body didn’t pick that moment to go all soft and buttery, as if Christian were whispering sweet nothings into his ear and not trying to save his life. What the hell is wrong with me?
Putting that question to the back of his mind, Elliot started to low crawl to the other side of the room as Christian lifted up to return fire. As he settled behind the loveseat, he realized he was trapped because someone had just broken in through the kitchen door.
“Oh, fuck.”
Not giving himself time to think, Elliot stood up and charged the man that came through the door, tackling him to the floor. Sitting on the man’s chest, he delivered a right hook to the man’s jaw, knocking him unconscious. Scrambling off the man, Elliot quickly grabbed the discarded gun. Elliot wanted to take a break to give his heart time to slow down before it beat out of his chest. Before he could put that plan to action, he swung around with the gun pointed at the man that just entered the kitchen.
“Stop right fucking there!”
“Whoa. There’s no need to be hostile.”
“What the fuck? You came here to kill me and I’m the one that’s hostile?”
“Hardly. Christian come get your guard dog.”
At Christian’s name, Elliot realized that it had gone quiet in the living room. What the hell is going on? Was Christian okay? Why the hell did that matter?
“Killian when did you get here?” Elliot nearly jumped out of his skin at Christian’s words directly behind him.
“Not too long ago. There were two others out there waiting to get in. I took care of them.” Killian stated before looking pointedly at Elliot. “Are you going to tell him to put the gun down or am I going to have to take it from him?”
“Elliot, he’s good.” Christian stated calmly.
He wasn’t so sure about that, no matter how velvety soft Christian’s voice sounded in his ear. They could be waiting for him to let his guard down so they could kidnap him to get the information on Logan they needed. He could probably take one of them, but not both. Before he could tell Christian how not good he was, the gun was taken from him. He looked at Killian with shock and awe.
“I really don’ like guns pointed at me.” He said to Elliot, then looked over his shoulder. “I take it he had nothing to do with Rick’s condition?”

The Sinclair Selkie - Chris Quinton - Author Blog Post, excerpt and review

Folk singer Donal MacCraith is touring the Scottish Western Isles, documenting traditional songs and investigating his family history. He meets Niall MacLachlan in Stornoway and Niall invites himself along. He has a secret and an agenda of his own. Meeting Donal is the chance he needs to complete it.

American Donal MacCraith is on a road trip along the western coast of Scotland and the Western Isles. His family roots are there, but his main reasons for the extended vacation are the songs and legends. He's a folk-singer, come to collect some new old material.

In Stornoway he meets the Shielingers and Niall MacLachlan. Donal is attracted to Niall, but doesn't act on it, unable to guess if the man is gay or not. When he continues his exploration of Lewis in his rented motorhome, making for the small crofting community his grandmother left as a young woman, he finds Niall waiting for him on the road just outside the town. Donal invites him along, and Niall leaps at the chance.

Once out on the road, Niall makes a play for Donal, and they begin a casual no-strings relationship, though Donal senses Niall has an agenda of his own. Donal knows their fling won't last, but that suits him at first. Later, though, he begins to want something more, even though he has the feeling Niall is using him.

He's right, and it's the clue in the old stories of the Sinclair Selkie Donal's grandmother had told him. That clue will lead Donal to the startling truth behind the legend, and they'll both be faced with life-changing choices.

Blog Post

I discovered the Greek and Roman myths at a young age - preteen, as I recall. When I'd devoured every one I could grab from the library [it helped that my parents had given me the permanent loan of their library cards, which gave me access to the grownups' sections in a separate room], I started hunting down the myths and legends of other cultures. Those of the Celtic races soon became my absolute favourites.

I played in their pools in Dark Waters, and returned to them in my ongoing Melusine's Cats series, and now in my latest release, The Sinclair Selkie.

Selkies are the seal-people, one of the magical races in Celtic mythology. They live in the sea as seals, but they can take off their seal cloaks, become human in form to walk on the land. And interact with the locals. Sometimes this is against their will, as in the legends where a man steals the sealskin and carries the woman off to be his wife. Because she can't return to the sea without her sealskin, she is trapped on land and in a marriage.

Sometimes it's the male selkie who's the seducer. After a whirlwind romance he leaves the woman pregnant, but when the child is older, he comes back to claim it, and takes the child to the sea to join him as a selkie.

In The Sinclair Selkie, it's the first legend that drives the story of Donal MacCraith and Niall MacLachlan...

This is a beautiful love story set among legends and I enjoyed every minute of the journey. If you like myths and legends set solidly in among present day Britain then this is for you!

Excerpt

"Stick around, Donal MacCraith. You fit in just right."

That was all the invitation Donal needed, and for the rest of the evening he stayed with the Shielingers, taking over Niall's bodhran when it was put aside for the tin whistle. Then, after the last song had been sung, the last beers ordered, Fergus pinned Donal in a corner.

"That song you sang," he said without preamble. "'The Sinclair Selkie'. I know the family legend, of course, but that song is a new one to me, and my mam is a Sinclair of Lewis. Did you write it?"

"What legend would that be?" Niall asked, pushing in between Fergus and Donal.

"No," Donal said over Niall's question. "It was one my gran passed down to me." During and after his parents' acrimonious divorce, Mairi and his grandfather Colum had been the mainstay of his teenage years. It was from them he learned Gaelic as well as the Scottish songs and legends, and inherited the talent to perform them. "She was a Sinclair before she married a MacCraith and she got it from her gran."

"From Lewis?"

"Yeah. Her family has a croft on the western side of the island, not far from Mhangurstadh."

Fergus nodded, his ready smile widening to a grin. "My granny came from Mhangurstadh. Hey, that'll make us kin! And Creagliath is between Mhangurstadh and the sea. That's the name of the Sinclair's keep, or what's left of it, though I'm thinking you know that."

"I know the names." Donal chuckled. "And I'm going to be visiting the place. Gran wants lots of photos, and I have to find her sisters and say hello. She gave me directions to find their old home as well, to see if it's still standing, and maybe still lived in."

"I doubt it will be, on either count," Fergus replied. "Though a few of the old places have been bought up by mainlanders and outlanders and modernized for summer homes."

"What legend?" Niall raised his voice. "You've never said anything about it before." There was a slight edge to his words and his gaze remained fastened on Donal.

"Oh, God," Pat groaned. "You've done it now! Our Niall's searching for old songs as well, only he's more specific. He's fixated on the seal-folk. He's only been with us a week, but if I had a pound for every time I've heard him ask--"

"Shut up." Fergus grinned. "It's the legend of the Sinclair Selkie, like in the song, only it's a mite darker. God, I haven't thought about it for years." He settled himself comfortably on the piano stool, and with the ease of a born storyteller, he launched into the tale. "Robert Sinclair was one of the many bastard sons of Ferghal Macauley, got on Agnes Sinclair when Ferghal was visiting Orkney some twenty and five years previously." Around them, the pub's remaining customers grew quiet, obviously listening. "Now, it so happened that young Robert was staying a while with his uncle, James Macauley, and Robert liked nothing more than riding out and exploring his uncle's lands. He was returning from one such adventure at dusk, when he heard a lassie singing down by the shore. Her voice was so sweet and pure it drew him down to the sea's edge.

"There he saw a young woman sitting among the boulders, combing out her long, long black hair in the light of the setting sun, and her beauty nigh on stopped the breath in his lungs. He immediately fell in love with her and decided she would be his, no matter what may be. When he rode closer, he saw that not only was she naked under the cloak of her hair, but a rich fur mantle lay beside her on the rocks.

"She was a selkie." He paused for dramatic effect and took a swig of beer.

"Then the young Sinclair did what any man would. He snatched up the sealskin in one arm, the lassie in the other, and carried her away to his uncle's keep. James gave him land near the sea, and that's where Robert raised Creagliath, so's his bride would be close to the waters she loved so much.

"Now," Fergus continued, "this is where the legend parts from the song. If you're expecting this tale to end with her bearing his children until she finds where he has hid her sealskin, then takes it back and abandons him and her bairns for the sea, then you'll be wrong. She never did find it, so she was bound to him until the end of his days. Even his passing did not free her, for though he was dead and buried, he'd told no one where he'd hidden that mantle, not even his eldest son nor his favorite daughter.

"In time, she grew old and faded from the living world, forever bereft of the sea and her selkie kindred, and her half-human sons and daughters could not console her. Where her body lies, no one knows, but it is said her spirit still weeps among the ruins of that once tall keep, as she searches endlessly for her lost sealskin.

"And that, my friends, is the legend of the Sinclair Selkie." He flourished a bow to acknowledge the spontaneous applause from his audience. "Is that how your folks remember it, Donal?"

"Pretty much." He smiled, and didn't mention that his gran knew another ending.

Escaping From Him by Liam Livings

Darryl’s on the run – from controlling boyfriend Chris, an air-conditioner called Dave (deceased), an intolerable, claustrophobic situation and a person he just can’t be any more. The trouble is, he doesn’t have a plan – or any money – and all he knows is he needs to get away from everything. That’s where a lucky lift to Glasgow comes in, which turns out to be just the beginning of a whole new life …

Author Q&A

Your stories tend to have a cast of friends and colleagues surrounding the main couple, why is this do you think?
Apart from at the start of a new relationship, when you may disappear to Planet Boyfriend for a month or so, who doesn’t have friends? I find it more interesting to read and write having a circle of friends / family around the main couple. It allows for the main characters to ask their opinions on what to do, and what not do to. It means you can show different sorts of gay relationship, apart from the main couple – because there are as many different types of gay couple as straight couples. I wanted to have Gavin and Big Gav as another gay couple in the story too. I have some very rough plans to tell their story too at some point…

By having a circle of friends around the main couple it gives you space to write some interesting sub plots so it’s more than only about the main couple. I like TV dramas like Brothers and Sisters, which is quite soapy, with all the ups and downs and conflict between the different characters, so I suppose I tend towards writing more like that.

At the heart of the story I always want to have the romance between the two men, but as in life, I want to show the great variety of things that happen around a relationship too.

What songs inspired the story?

I Love It by Icona Pop was the inspiration for the whole story. The lyrics at the start, I threw your sh*t into a bag and pushed it down the stairs, gave me an idea of an opening scene where a man threw his boyfriend’s stuff into a black bin bag and pushed it down the stairs, and then I was off!

Fernando, by Abba. No way can I get this far without mentioning Abba in some way! Lena is Swedish, obvs, and she misses Darryl when he moves to Scotland, she says how long they’ve not seen one another. I imagined them being best friends for many years to come, like two soldiers, putting up a fight against life together.

Now we’re old and grey Fernando

And since many years I haven’t seen a rifle in your hand.

Your Disco Needs You by Kylie. Big Gav is a massive Kylie fan and I remember some years ago there was a trend for people – mainly gay men in fairness - to wear T shirts with Your Disco Needs You across the front. It was, as they say, all the rage. For some reason that popped into my head when I was thinking about Big Gav and I imaged how great it would be to have a big hairy man mountain of a bear with that T shirt on, years after it was fashionable, and as soon as I’d thought of it, I knew that was *exactly* what Big Gav would do.

Excerpt

Darryl goes clubbing with his new group of friends

We went to Truvy Jones, the night club. Lena danced with Big Gav - the enormous hairy bear of a man mountain, full beard, long hair and a T-Shirt with Your Disco Needs You in silver glittery letters - after he'd lifted her over his head and danced with her on his shoulders for two songs. Gavin got drunk on gin, which I already knew meant tears, but he wasn't listening to us earlier. He ended up crying into his tonic, sucking his slice of lime and saying how much he still loved his ex - despite telling me, every time I'd seen him before, that he was a bastard. At its peak, we divided and conquered: Lena took Big Gav and danced with him, while I followed Gavin to the gents' toilets to hear his woes. Mid-story, Charlie joined us, leaning against the sinks in the gents' and said, "At it again, is he?" He looked at Gavin. "He does this every time he has gin. Every time. I told him last time, I wasn't looking after him, next time he was on the mother's ruin, and look who's doing it tonight."

I frowned at Charlie for not helping the situation. "Just because Big Gav is like your ex in some ways doesn't mean he's like him in all ways. They're two different people? I mean, I could do you a drawing but it would be a very simple one." I smiled and he looked at me, attempting a smile. I misted up the mirror and drew two stick men, writing 'Big Gav' under one and 'Ex' under the other.

Gavin stood, wiped his eyes with some paper towel. "I didn't expect to be in another relationship straight after, you know. I thought I'd have chance to do all the things you do when you split up with someone. Then the computer's rhythm throws up him, and I'm arse over tit, in up to my neck in love. I can't imagine being with anyone else.”

Meet the Authors

We'd like to thank RJ for inviting us to her blog. We are an American-British writing duo. Lorraine lives minutes from Stonehenge, and I (Crys) live amidst the majestic Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

We met in a chat room seven years ago. One day we were discussing slash, and lo and behold, we both admitted to reading it. Lorraine proposed we should try our hand at writing and we've been writing ever since. We meet almost daily on messenger and skype to write, plot, and share our lives. No Good Deed is our first published work.

No Good Deed came about based on the saying no good deed goes unpunished. What is the ultimate good deed? Saving a life. Sixteen year old Connor Murphy saves the life of a friend and in the process reveals his true nature, he is one of the Fae.

Gordon Owen takes Conner from his home and forces Connor to work for him, casting spells, reading thoughts, you get the message. For seven years Conner is trapped in the world of man.

I remember when I first mentioned Deed could be based on a modern day faerie tale, Lorraine went silent. Her vision of faerie tales was more Tinkerbell, small flying faeries with tiny butterfly wings. The Fae encompass all kinds of magical beings, in every size, shape, and color.

I've loved faerie tales as far back as I can remember, the original tellings written by the Brothers Grimm, and those edited by Andrew Lang. Later I was introduced to darker tales by Angela Carter. My bookcases are lined with faeries tales, mixed with dark classics from Poe, Shakespeare, Stoker, and others.

Where I tend to live in the past, Lorraine is into more modern literature, the likes of Dean Koontz, Rob Thurman, and Jim Butcher. Deed is a combination of old world meets urban world.

Excerpt from, No Good Deed

“What would you pay for one perfect night with me, your every desire fulfilled?” Connor braced himself for Scott's response, his stomach churning. Now that the words were out of his mouth, he couldn’t take them back.

Scott’s face transformed into a cold, hard mask. “Tell me, Connor. Are you curious, or is this a business proposition? Some side-line you have going to supplement your wages? You had me fooled. Is this all a game to you?” Scott’s grasp tightened painfully around Connor’s forearms as Scott shoved him back, holding him at arm’s length. The verbal assault continued. ”I heard the rumours about you, but I was prepared to overlook them, to give you a chance. And what do you do first opportunity you get? You proposition me. You’re nothing more than a fucking tease. You'd fit right in at the Midnight Agency.”

Connor gasped. “I have never…“ Connor's anger boiled over and he wrenched himself free. “You dare judge me? You're no fucking saint. You’re the expert on whores. And as for rumours, I’ve heard more than my share about you, from your father, no less. He delighted in telling me of your exploits and conquests. Your father takes what he wants. You pay for what you want. I can neither take nor pay. I am left to bargain with what I have.”

Shocked at the outburst, Scott crossed his arms and leant against the black granite worktop. He stared at Connor, a puzzled expression on his face, as if he was trying to work out where the outburst came from. Scott’s tone softened, and he cocked his head to one side. “What do you really want, Connor? I feel like I’m always one step behind with you, as if I’m missing some vital piece of information. There are moments when I think I’ve seen the real you, and in those rare instances, I like what I see. Then this other version rears its ugly head and takes me by surprise.”

“I want what is mine!” Connor snarled and thumped his chest. “The land we visited today belongs to my people. It’s their birth right. I know for a fact your father has already drawn up plans, everything has been approved. All he has to do is say the word, and what is left of my world will be destroyed.” All the fight drained out of him at the enormity of what he revealed sank in. Connor cast a glance at Scott's confused face before he continued. “The land. It means nothing to you. And yes, I will do anything you want, sacrifice everything," Connor confessed in anguish. "I do not take this lightly. My word binds me tighter than any legal contract.”

“Marry me.”

“Wha…?” Connor stared in open-mouthed shock. Whatever he expected sure as hell wasn’t a proposal. To give his body for a night was one thing, but marriage? Connor reached back, grasping the counter to steady himself. He took a deep breath. He'd been ensnared in his own trap. A million thoughts raced through his mind, but at the foremost was the land.

“You asked my price, that’s it. I told you in the car I want a normal life and someone special to share it with. I think you do, too. Wouldn’t you like a real place to call your own, Connor? You can’t enjoy coming home to an empty apartment any more than I do. You can deny it all you want, but you know there’s something between us.” Scott closed the distance between them. “If I’m honest, I’ve been drawn to you from the moment I laid eyes on you in my office. At first I thought it was infatuation,” Scott shrugged, “or good old-fashioned lust, but it’s more than that. Whatever it is, it feels right, and I want a chance to explore it. I want a partner for life, not a one night stand.” Scott caught Connor’s hand and rubbed his thumb over the knuckles. “The ball’s in your court, Connor.”

The Dream Alchemist - Joanna Chambers, new release

Welcome to Joanna Chambers and congratulations on her new release.

I am a huge fan of Joanna's and you can see my reviews of her Enlightenment series here:

I'm so excited to read this book...

Over to Joanna...

I'm nervous about this release in a way I haven't felt for a while. My last six releases have all been historical romances, and I've got pretty used to that genre, but this new book, well, this is, um, how can I put it? A sort of paranormaly-fantasyish MM romance?

Every release is nerve-wracking to put out there but putting out something you're not even sure as the author how to categorise is particularly gulp-inducing.

So I'm trying to concentrate on the stuff I do know: that I love these characters (Bryn and Laszlo) and that the book is inspired by classic fairy tales (Sleeping Beauty and The Snow Queen) and that this might be the start of another trilogy, but this time round, I've got different MCs in every book, so I'm not holding back any happy endings!

The Book

When the sun goes down, their passion awakens…and so do their nightmares.

Centuries ago, a man with Bryn Llewelyn’s dreamwalking ability would have been a shaman or a priest. In this time, he’s merely exhausted, strung out on too much caffeine and too little sleep.

Sleep means descent into Somnus—an alternate reality constructed of the combined dreaming consciousness of ordinary humans. A place he’d rather avoid. Trouble is, his powers don’t include the ability to go without sleep indefinitely. At some point his eyes close…and his nightmare begins.

As a teen, the treatment that cured Laszlo Grimm’s sleep disorder stole his dreams—and his ability to feel emotion. Petrified of needing more “treatment”, he clings to familiar rituals and habits. But lately his nightly terror has returned, and when he meets Bryn in the real world, the man seems hauntingly familiar. Not only that, Bryn awakens feelings in Laszlo for the first time in years…

Slowly Bryn and Laszlo realize they are both unknowing pawns in a plan of unspeakable evil. And that their powerful attraction could release the destinies locked within them—or be the instrument of their doom.

Charlie Cochrane talks murder

Charlie, you started out writing romances, so what made you turn to crime?

I wish I could steal Nicky Slade’s answer to this. She was once asked, over dinner, by a posh and patronising bloke, “What do you do, my dear?” To which she replied, “I murder people.”

That’s part of the appeal in being an author. When you write romances sometimes you feel you’re living that romance – the excitement of flirtation comes alive, the love scenes stir your emotions as you commit them to the screen, the characters become real and alive. So what about when you write a thriller or crime book? Do you get the thrill of “committing a murder” and getting away with it? Actually, I’m not sure that’s the sort of thrill I want.

What I do like is the sense of creating, and picking apart, a puzzle. I’ve always liked puzzles, quizzes, games and the like and have always read a wide range of mysteries. Maybe it was natural to try my hand at creating my own, whether historical or contemporary. And writing these books appeals to my inherent belief that good should triumph over evil. Maybe that brings us full circle to romance again?

Blurb:

Tea and sympathy have never been so deadly.
Schoolteacher Adam Matthews just wants to help select a new headteacher and go home. The governors at Lindenshaw St Crispin’s have already failed miserably at finding the right candidate, so it’s make or break this second time round. But when one of the applicants is found strangled in the school, what should have been a straightforward decision turns tempestuous as a flash flood in their small English village.
Inspector Robin Bright isn’t thrilled to be back at St. Crispin’s. Memories of his days there are foul enough without tossing in a complicated murder case. And that handsome young teacher has him reminding himself not to fraternize with a witness. But it’s not long before Robin is relying on Adam for more than just his testimony.

As secrets amongst the governors emerge and a second person turns up dead, Robin needs to focus less on Adam and more on his investigation. But there are too many suspects, too many lies, and too many loose ends. Before they know it, Robin and Adam are fighting for their lives and their hearts.

Excerpt:

As if on cue, the rozzers—it had to be the police, Adam thought, as no other grey-suited individuals would be lurking around the school—came through it.

“Ah, Inspector Bright,” Victor said. “We were just wondering when you’d be here to tell us what’s going on.”

“A murder enquiry’s going on.” The inspector’s voice preceded him into the room.

Christine clasped her hands to her mouth. “Murder? Oh . . .”

The inspector appeared, nodding sympathetically. “I’m afraid so. Which means we’ll need to get a statement from each one of you before you can go.”

If the policeman said anything else, Adam didn’t quite catch it. He was feeling confused enough, so to have—Wright, Bright, what the hell had Victor said his name was?—walk through the door looking like that sent his thoughts off in ten directions. Policemen weren’t supposed to be so tall, dark, and stupidly handsome. Apart from in Adam’s fantasies.

Oliver’s voice interrupted the unwanted germination of some inappropriate thoughts in Adam’s brain. “Perhaps you could take Mrs. Probert’s statement first? She has two small children at the school, and they’ll need her to pick them up at the end of the lessons.” His unexpected thoughtfulness earned him one of Christine’s stunning smiles.

“Happy to oblige,” the inspector said with kindness.

Why did Adam never seem to meet blokes who reacted to his smile the way they reacted to Christine’s? Why couldn’t this policeman favour him with a flash of those dark eyes?

“Perhaps you could come along now, Mrs. Probert, and my sergeant could take you through things?” The sergeant looked like that was the best news he’d heard all day. “Anyone else need to get away urgently?”

For a moment—only a moment—Adam felt like shouting, Take me, take me now! but this was serious business. Was it defiance or denial in the face of sudden death that made him feel like behaving like a schoolboy? Or was it simply the incongruity of somebody like the inspector walking through the door? Instant chemistry, that’s what they called it, but he’d never come across such a sensation before. It was the romantic equivalent of being hit over the head with a sock full of wet sand.

Then he remembered why the police were here—Youngs’s body, those awful teeth—and felt sick again.

Jamie Lynn Miller - Guest Post: These firemen are hot under the collar!

Many thanks to RJ Scott for having me here today! Keep reading to find out how you can win an Amazon gift card!

I'm Jamie Lynn Miller and I'd like to talk about my novel Burnin' for You and my inspiration for writing it.

My tagline says it all: "Men in uniform...and out". Give me a cop, a fireman or a paramedic and I'll write a story about them.

I'm wildly passionate about this book because I was lucky enough to spend 14 days with my local fire department doing research, one of the most amazing experiences in my life.

I was fitted for my own turnout gear and went on ride-a-longs, where I sat in the jump seat in the engine. I was inside a live burn tower where I got to experience a "backdraft" first hand and help to put it out. I learned how to find my way blind in the dark in a smoke filled room wearing an oxygen tank and mask and full turnout gear. I went 60 feet up in the air in the snorkel. I learned exactly how the paramedics operate and looked at all their gear. I saw how the apparatus and equipment rooms were set up. I learned how to roll hose and attach it to a hydrant and the crucial role the engineer plays in getting that water to the fire. I used the Jaws of Life to pry a door off of a car and used an axe to break out a windshield.

Like I said - most amazing experience of my life.

And during all this, I took notes. Lots and lots of notes. Notebooks full. Because I knew someday I was going to write a story. Or four. :-) Not only does this book encompass my love of the fire department, but it's also an homage to my favorite shows like Emergency and Third Watch. Station 127 is real. It's the actual department in California where Emergency was filmed and I was lucky enough to visit there several years ago. And it still looks just like the fictitious Station 51!

So here it is, the story of Lucas and Evan and how they battled their way through smoke and flames to find their happy ending. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

BLURB: Lucas Taylor is a New York City fireman at Station 127, dedicated to his job, even though it has brought him heartrending tragedy - the loss of his lover, Ryan, in an explosion.

Evan Singer is the new guy in town, a paramedic transferred into Station 127 and he sets his eyes on Lucas from the get-go.

Neither knowing who the other is, their first meeting is a night of passion and desire that awakens something inside Lucas he never thought he’d feel again.

But when Lucas discovers that Evan is a paramedic, it all comes crashing down. For despite the feelings he has for Evan, Lucas has vowed to never again get involved with someone on the job, after losing Ryan to it.

Can Evan convince Lucas to open up his heart and take a chance on love again, despite who Evan is?

Includes the sequel – Where There’s Smoke!
Things turn explosive at the FDNY when a young man Lucas rescues from a fire becomes an obsessed stalker, and Evan's altercation with a victim's husband threatens to end his career.

EXCERPT:

“We need to talk,” Evan said firmly, walking toward Lucas.

Lucas turned from the sinks to face Evan. “No. We don’t,” he replied, just as strongly.

“You owe me an explanation, damn it,” Evan countered, and Lucas could sense the hurt under his words.

Hardening himself, he flung his reply at the young man. “I was drunk. It was nothing but a mistake, sleeping with you. End of story.”

Evan shook his head. “No. No, I’m not buying that. You never would’ve called me on Sunday if that was true.”

Knowing he was caught, Lucas floundered for a moment before finding his voice, softer this time. “Evan…nothing more can happen between us. So just let it go. Please.”

“I don’t understand. Why are you acting like this?” Evan asked plaintively, taking another step toward Lucas, reaching out to touch him. “What’s going – “

The door to the bathroom opened at that moment and Tom walked in, dressed in only his boxers, a towel over his shoulder. Evan immediately dropped his hand and took a step back from Lucas, as they both averted their gaze from one another. It was obvious from the look on Tom’s face that he knew he’d just interrupted something, but before he could speak, Evan was brushing past him, out of the bathroom.

Lucas sighed and turned back to the sink, bracing his arms on it and hanging his head. Tom walked up beside him a moment later.

“Want to tell me what that was all about?” Tom asked.

"Nothing,” Lucas muttered.

“Certainly didn’t look like nothing. Something going on with you two?” Tom pressed gently. “You haven’t even known him for 24 hours yet and you’ve pretty much been avoiding him since he got here. Something about him just rubbing you the wrong way?”

Lucas hesitated for a minute, then decided to confide in his friend. He blew out a long breath then straightened up, turning to face Tom.

“Actually…we’ve known each other longer than 24 hours,” he confessed.

Tom blinked. “You…what?”

“Remember when I said I wasn’t alone on Saturday?”

Tom nodded. “Yeah…” Then his eyes widened. “You don’t mean…? You were with Evan? How…I mean – “

Lucas glanced away from his friend. “I picked him up at Casey’s.”

“You picked him up? You mean you…?”

“Yes, Tom, we fucked each other,” Lucas confirmed bluntly.

“What were you thinking?” Tom hissed. “Sleeping with some guy you don’t even know? You’re lucky he wasn’t some psycho and killed you!”

“God damn it, Tom! I was lonely! I was hurting and I was lonely. I miss Ryan so fucking much…”

Lucas swallowed deeply. “And with Saturday the anniversary of his death…I just wasn’t thinking straight, okay? I’d had too much to drink and he was interested and I just wanted to pretend…”

Tom sighed and reached out and squeezed Lucas’s shoulder. “So I take it from what I saw in here things didn’t go so well that night?”

Lucas gave a rueful chuckle. “Actually, it was just the opposite. I even spent the night. He gave me his number and I called him yesterday.”

“Hang on, I don’t understand. Why are you avoiding him like the plague, then?”

“Because the one thing we neglected to talk about was our jobs!” Lucas pushed angrily away from the sink, his back to Tom. “I told him today there can’t be anything between us.”

Tom was silent for a long minute, then asked softly, “Do you like him? You must if you called him.”

Lucas whirled around. “It doesn’t matter if I like him or not. He’s a paramedic.”

“Ah, Luke…don’t do this to yourself. Ryan was a fireman – “

“We’re ALL firemen, Tom! The medics are in just as much danger as we are. Half the time they’re rushing in right behind us into some burning, collapsing building to pull someone out. Or they’re pulling up on a gang-banger bleeding in the street while bullets are still flying,” Lucas finished, pulling in a deep breath.

“Do you think Ryan would’ve wanted this for you?” Tom asked gently. “For you to be alone and unhappy? Or do you think he would want you to move on? Not to forget him, but just to find someone that makes you happy again.”

Lucas stared at Tom, throat working against the emotions threatening to smother him. Finally, he shook his head, his voice rough.

“I already lost someone I loved to this job. I won’t go through that again. I can’t.”

Then he was pushing past Tom, out of the bathroom, swiping angrily at his moisture filled eyes.

He leaned against the wall next to the doorway leading into the dorm, taking a minute to get himself back under control before heading in, knowing what he’d find. And sure enough, Evan was lying there in his bed on his side, facing Lucas’s bed, wide awake, his expression hurt and angry and confused.

Lucas looked away from him without a word, climbing into bed, facing away from Evan, but he still felt the young man’s eyes boring into his back until he finally fell into an uneasy sleep hours later.

BIO:

Jamie Lynn Miller has been writing fiction since childhood and decided to take the plunge and go pro in 2008, finding to her amazement that people truly enjoyed her love stories. She’s a romantic at heart, and her tales reflect the desire we all have to find “the one,” persevering through trials and heartache for that happy ending.

Jamie has a degree in fine arts and has spent the last twenty years working as a graphic designer, though she’d much rather be writing. She was born in Chicago and still lives there today with her husband and their two furry, four-footed children, er… cats.

If she’s not brainstorming story ideas, you can find Jamie at a sci-fi convention, in front of a furnace doing glass blowing, or on a mat twisted into a yoga pose.
