When we travel on holiday in the UK we plan our journeys meticulously to include a break. Sometimes the journey can take up to three or four hours, and we HAVE to stop somewhere for a cuppa. If a journey is going to be any longer we might even consider staying overnight somewhere halfway through.

So when this cool thing popped up on my timeline measuring the UK against other things I was fascinated. The UK is tiny compared to US as a whole, and Texas is god knows how much bigger.

In September 2012 I attended a writers retreat thingamy for a publisher I used to be with in a beautiful place in Tennessee. There I met Amber Kell and Carol Lynne for the first time, and Tennessee became the place where they encouraged me to spread my wings.

Anyway, armed with encouragement—and not a small amount of excitement—I sat down and imagined a series of six books, six couples with lives that interconnected. I knew I wanted to write the first book about two first responders who in one way or another saved each other. Also I wanted to set the whole series in the mountains of Tennessee.

Book 1 was The Fireman and the Cop, at just over 30,000 words it was a new departure for me, a series each one 30-35k where I decided they would be delivered pretty regularly (one a month). Book 1 flowed, book 2 flowed and became The Teacher and The Soldier, Book 3 was The Carpenter and The Actor, followed by The Doctor and the Bad Boy, and it was all still flowing even to The Paramedic and the Writer. I loved my Ellery books, but book 6 was a hard one to write. Writing my SEAL with PTSD was the kind of story that rips you inside when you write it. I found myself in tears so many times when I was writing the pain that the character was going through.

Who could a man with PTSD talk to if he struggled talking to friends and counsellors? I threw it open to my group of FB friends and they suggested that he may talk to someone who listens without judgement – a barman. Perfect. I had my foil for the tortured hero. Avery, my barman, listened and said things in the right places, and most of all he told Travis he loved him but that he would under no circumstances back down or leave.

The Agent and the Model. Book 7, is Mikey’s story and came completely out of the blue.

See, this was supposed to be just six books. But… Mikey was hurt so badly in book 5, and I sent him off to the City for a wonderful new life, but what if memories of the horrific hate crime he was a victim of made his new life one that was fragile and open to hurt? When Alex, the man he loves, proves to Mikey that all he is seen as is a helpless victim he decides he needs to go home to Ellery and confront ghosts and make peace.

Which is very difficult when Alex follows him.

And then... I got all the books back from a new publisher and suddenly I realized I want to write a book 8...

The Sinner and the Saint will be out late spring... :)

I love my Ellery boys...
Mikey's story.

Michael comes home to Ellery to face his past, only his present keeps intruding in the form of his agent Alex Casey, who won’t take no for an answer.

Michael Hardin is back in Ellery to face his past. The victim of a hate crime, he has memories that lie just out of his reach and nightmares that won’t leave him alone.

Alex Casey loves Michael but he completely ruined everything by treating Michael like someone who needed to be wrapped in cotton wool.

Can Michael discover more about his past and find love with Alex?
It's Wednesday, it's Hump Day and this week we have Anna Butler in the Hot Seat, welcome Anna...

Do you ever abandon a draft partly written and just move on? Do you keep a file of plot ideas?

Yes to the first question, but I have a very thrifty mind—nothing is ever wasted! The 18k contemporary story set in a London coffeehouse, where a young man falls for an archaeologist working at the museum, was abandoned and left on the hard drive for years, but never entirely forgotten. Three years later, I went back to it. But the things that had held me back from continuing it then were still there. I mean, just how many contemporary coffee shop m/m romances are out there? What could I do with it to make it different?

The answer was make it steampunk. Not goggles and corsets, but an alternative world where aeroships and laser guns are just part of the scenery. So the coffee house owner became an ex-aeroship pilot and the archaeologist an Aegyptologist, mixed up within a society where the government is run by powerful, oligarchical Houses and assassination is common… and the steampunk, coffee house, adventure/mystery m/m romance Lancaster’s Luck series was born.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I almost always have a high-level outline of some kind. The mental process is usually: I’m starting here, I need to get over there… this has to happen and this, in that order… but oh, look, suddenly I’m taking a diversion around this plotty thing that my characters have decided to do and I wasn’t expecting… ooh, now that’s interesting, let’s see where we go with it, but we still have to get to our destination, so here’s how we work it in…

So a bit of both. I like to describe it by quoting something I saw on LiveJournal years ago, written by a fanfic author. Sadly, I can’t now find the post so that I can give proper credit where it’s due, but this sums up my process beautifully—“I have started my story. I have ended my story. I just haven’t middled my story.”

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

Oh, I love, love, love research!

Partly for its own sake. It’s satisfying to learn when women athletes were first allowed into the Olympics (the second modern Olympiad in 1900 in Paris, as it happens) or who discovered and excavated the Osireion at the Temple of Seti in Abydos, or how interferometry might be warped to make a dispersion shield, or what is the deal with wormholes and faster-than-light technology? Mostly, though, I love it because it helps me visualise and describe the worlds I’m building, and because those worlds are stronger and more vivid from the details I’ve been able to add to them. I write mostly speculative fiction – pure sci-fi with the Taking Shield series, and steampunk with Lancaster’s Luck. Both need a lot of research to give me the telling details that, I hope, make the worlds both more realistic as well as more fantastic. Not to mention that it gives me masses of background material for my website and for blog posts. Terribly useful stuff, research.

So, I do a lot of research in advance, and always do more as I’m writing, although usually that’s shorter and more focused on a single issue that the writing (or editing) has thrown up. For instance, during the editing last autumn of the second Lancaster’s Luck book, The Jackal’s House, I had to do some fast research into the history of locomotives to come up with a name for a fairground ride.

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Killing off my inner perfectionist, which likes to go obsessively over and over the chapter I just finished before moving on to the next. I am an appalling ‘tinkerer’ and I just cannot leave well alone. So it takes me months to draft a new book. I’m already a month late with the final Taking Shield book, it’s nowhere near finished and I’ve spent three weeks polishing and polishing one ruddy chapter. I really need to get that tendency under control, and if anyone has any tips for doing it, let me know!

Fanfic - Yay or Nay, if yay which is your favourite fandom?

Oh, yay! Very definitely yay. There are some fanfics I reread more often than their original source.

It’s sad that fanfic is often sniggered at and derided, thought to be nerdy and for people who can't write their own worlds and must steal the work of real writers. That’s nonsense. At its best, fanfic is creative, transformative and inclusive, often far more inclusive and tolerant of difference than the original canon ever was (or could be, given the commercial restraints within which publishing, TV and film companies operate) and is a hugely important way for fans to express love of their shows/books or whatever.

Fanfic is written and enjoyed by countless thousands of people. True it’s sometimes done badly, sometimes very badly indeed, but is sometimes quite incandescently brilliant.

I still read in Harry Potter fandom (mostly Harry/Draco, but I do like other pairings depending on the writer) and some of my all time favourites are McKay/Shepard stories from Stargate Atlantis. My go-to comfort reads when I’m tired and cranky, though, are some of the many variants on Pride and Prejudice. You can’t get more romantic than Mr Darcy!

Something is stalking the Aegyptian night and endangering the archaeologists excavating the mysterious temple ruins in Abydos. But is it a vengeful ancient spirit or a very modern conspiracy…

Rafe Lancaster’s relationship with Gallowglass First Heir, Ned Winter, flourishes over the summer of 1900, and when Rafe’s House encourages him to join Ned’s next archaeological expedition, he sees a chance for it to deepen further. Since all the Houses of the Britannic Imperium, Rafe’s included, view assassination as a convenient solution to most problems, he packs his aether pistol—just in case.

Trouble finds them in Abydos. Rafe and Ned begin to wonder if they’re facing opposition to the Temple of Seti being disturbed. What begins as tricks and pranks escalates to attacks and death, while the figure of the Dog—the jackal-headed god Anubis, ruler of death—casts a long shadow over the desert sands. Destruction follows in his wake as he returns to reclaim his place in Abydos. Can Rafe and Ned stand against both the god and House plots when the life of Ned’s son is on the line?

Paramedic Jamie Llewelyn moves to Ellery to start a new life away from the City. Attached to the hospital and working for his friend Liam Wolfe he's happy—even if he has to keep coming up with excuses to miss the Friday meet ups. He had peace and he could finally make a difference in a community that needed him.

When he and Max rescue John Doe from a crashed car balanced on the edge of a ravine Jamie didn’t know but his life would never be the same again. John opens his startlingly violet eyes and suddenly Jamie is falling hard. If only John didn’t have a gun and could remember why he’d shot the passenger in the car. Then maybe passion could change into something else. Love.

It's nearly time to take down the tree and pack away the ornaments for another year, there's always a huge build up to Christmas then it seems to fly by...

Crepe Paper always brings back memories. A couple days before Christmas mum and dad would remove all the ornaments and so on from our large sideboard and then would put down swathes of this soft crinkly paper in all different colours. Then on top of that would go Christmas nuts and sweets and some decorations. This to a young kid was Christmas heaven!

When we woke up in the morning we would have a pillow case at the end of the bed, normally with a Rupert annual and bits and pieces from Avon like talc (Brits will get that). We still do this for our kids and even more special is that Matt still believes in Santa.

Christmas TV was a highpoint in our house when I was a kid, not so much now. We only had a couple of TV channels and there was always the afternoon film (after the Queen’s speech). I remember the excitement when one of the channels showed Star Wars. Then there was Morecombe and Wise, The Bond film, and The Coronation Street Christmas episode. Oh and which Brit here recalls Angie being served the divorce papers by Den? ROFL.

What is your best Christmas memory from childhood?
The cop lifted the mask with shaky fingers. “I like firefighters,” he whispered and coughed.

“Sorry?” Max leaned in to hear him over the noise and chaos outside the rig.

“Firefighters… I can never find a gay one.”

Well, I like cops, Max thought.
Soldier, Daniel Skylar, falls hard and heavy for school teacher Luke Fitzgerald. How can he make him stay in Ellery?

Luke Fitzgerald left Ellery Mountain for college and vowed never to come back. When his abusive father is murdered he has no choice but to return. Luke only goes home to sell off his share of the Ellery Mountain Cabins, but everything changes when he meets the son of the other owner. Daniel Skylar lives every day to the limit and sees a future in Luke.

It doesn’t matter what Daniel says, or how much he needs Luke. Luke isn’t staying once everything is sold off. Surely Daniel can understand that what they have between them is just a two-week fling; there is no way it could be love.

Can Daniel persuade Luke that they are in love, and they can build a future together?
"I..." Zach stopped, assessing the lies he could spin, thinking of the stories he had used to persuade people to leave him alone. Nothing crystallized as right for this moment in time. There was something about this cop, a man who seemed not much older than he was, an officer who wasn't a city cop, but a small town cop. He wouldn't be part of the system the same way as the cops in the city who said he should go home. I don't have a home. Maybe...maybe he should tell him the truth.

Welcome to Charlie Cochrane, today's guest for Feature Friday, Charlie is here to talk about writing a mystery novel, take it away Charlie...

How do you create suspense in your stories?

There are all the well-known techniquey things to draw on - shorter sentences, fast paced action, cutting down on description etc - but I think in the end it comes down to good plotting and good writing. I've just read two of the British Library series of classic mysteries and you couldn't have had two better examples of what to do and what not. One of them was so slow, even in the supposedly tense bits, because the author had the habit of never saying something once when he could say it four times. The other was really gripping, with a great climax where the reader was allowed to get into the head of the person-you-thought-was-the-killer-but-actually-wasn't and depicting their emotions and muddled thoughts.

Do you start with the crime/mystery then work the story around it or do you wing it?

Wing it, wing it, wing it. You see, when I write a mystery it's like I'm watching the story unfold on the television or hearing it on the radio. In half hour instalments, maybe, each of which corresponds to a chapter or two. I see the body being found, the characters being introduced, the clues lining up, and as I follow all of this I start to wonder who might have done it. This may sound totally ludicrous, but it works for me.

What are the ethics of writing historical figures?

In my humble opinion (as they say), I believe you have to make them act in line with what is known of their character. I know in historical fiction any and everyone is seen as fair game, so you can have the fictional Horatio Hornblower rubbing shoulders with real life admirals like Pellew or Nelson, which is fine so long as they do what the real Pellew and Nelson would have done. However, particularly in fanfiction, I've seen both of these gents acting in a way that would be called libellous if it were written about a living person. Frankly, it can be insulting. (Ooh, I got all cross there.)

In fiction anything is fair game, do you like finding obscure ways of bumping people off?

In a word, no. I'm not a writer whose mysteries focus on clever methods of despatch or highly complicated denouements. I'm more interested in the why someone was killed than the how, so my victims tend to be bludgeoned or poisoned or something straightforward, leaving the reader's mind uncluttered so they can concentrate on the characters and their motivations.

Have you ever had to go back and *hide the keys*? (stealing cues from Bill & Ted)

To my shame, I confess I had to look up that reference. If you mean do I have to go back through the manuscript when writing to plant clues/red herrings, then yes, I do sometimes, but it's a risky business. If you don't have a light touch and a sure hand, it can scream "Look! Look! Clue!" Funny thing is that usually the references I need are in the story already, so when I go back for a first review I'm amazed at how things hang together. Like my sub-conscious has been far more effective than I have at subtly seeding the story with what I'd need.

What part of the process do you find the hardest?

Writing sex scenes. Which is why it's great writing the Lindenshaw series and the recent Cambridge Fellows novellas, all of which are fade to black.

About Charlie

It's been far too long since Christian Matthews has seen Daniel Bailey. In fact the last time they met was in college.

Seven years down the road, Chris is licking his wounds after being 'asked to leave' the private school where he was teaching. He has no job, no money, and has to rely on his friend Amelia for a job and a room to live in. He needs a freaking Christmas miracle to make this Season anything other than a total loss.

Then Daniel comes back into his life and suddenly everything seems possible. Not only is Daniel still the man Christian wants more than anything, but this time Chris may well actually tell Daniel how he feels.
And even though Christmas isn’t really at the heart of the story, Chris and Daniel's love is the focus, it is a perfect example of the Christmas spirit. Of course, the setting of New York in December and January may have something to do with it. Two of my favorite scenes ere the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller center and the two guys going ice skating. The latter was hilarious! ..."
Chapter 1

Wednesday, November 21st

Everything started between one breath and the next, with the seventy-fifth repeat of Lennon’s Christmas classic in his ears and the smell of Amelia’s cranberry muffins in his nose. It was heaven and hell and all the clichés in between, a surprise that kicked him in the butt so hard that he almost fell down.

Daniel.

Daniel Bailey, of the Boston Baileys, the boy who Daniel had wanted with a passion.

Tall. Way, way tall, with chestnut brown hair and beautiful hazel eyes, a dimpled chin and high cheekbones, Daniel freaking Bailey was perfection personified. They had studied together. Daniel was in English Lit 101 for easy credit; Chris was the TA for the English professor. Daniel had been assigned remedial English because he was so good with “special needs” students. Special needs was, in this case, a euphemism used by those that actually worked hard at college. Used with much disdain to describe those students who just didn’t seem to care enough. That was Daniel, the boy who never had to try. He never ever appeared to work at anything. Yet, somehow Daniel always managed to scrape through.

Then again, why would Daniel even want to work at school? He didn’t need to. A trust fund at twenty-five, a Ferrari—two actually—in the campus parking lot. Holidays in Europe, no need to worry about planning a career—it was expected he would join the family firm when he left college. Daniel had it easy really and was a person with a stunningly bright light about him.

He still looked good at twenty-nine, which is what he must be considering Chris had just scored the big three-oh plus two. Still tall. Well, duh. Still with the long bangs that curled and flicked artfully around his face, still in denim that cost more than Chris probably made in a week at the café, and still with those god-awful, if expensive, sweatshirts he was so fond of. This one was a curious mix of brown and blue, and on a lesser man, a shorter, wider, uglier man, it would have been an awful sight. On Daniel however, the cotton curved over defined muscles and clung to his torso before skimming hips and covering the very area that Chris had defined in college as sheer heaven.

“Chris? Chris Matthews, is that you?” Chris blinked at the deep, cultured voice, his dick hardening impossibly against the zip of his pants. Daniel had that effect on him at college, and apparently nothing had changed. Thankfully, what was happening was hidden under the apron declaring he was one of Amelia’s puffs. Daniel was talking to him. The last time Daniel had talked to him it had been at graduation ten years ago. Then there was the Christmas eggnog incident. Fuck. Why did he have to remember that now? Here? In the middle of the freaking midmorning rush?

Both having stayed at college over Christmas, they were the only two left in their respective shared houses and, more by luck than judgment, had met at the campus coffee shop. Coffee led to a debate on Grand Theft Auto, which led to a grudge match back at Daniel’s house. Daniel’s house had been so different from the dump Chris shared with seven others. Daniel shared with only two others and they each had their own bathrooms. Luxurious and yet another example of the difference between them. To this day, he couldn’t remember whose idea it was to introduce eggnog into the situation but the memories of what had happened next sustained him for quite a few years.

Daniel had tipped the contents of the bag gently onto the work surface and Chris held a hand out to stop the bottle of bourbon from rolling off the side. Following the recipe, they concentrated as only two young guys full of beer could on creating what was described in the recipe as the perfect eggnog. Eggs, sugar, nutmeg, cream, then brandy, a bit more brandy, and then some bourbon, which Chris had tried with a healthy swallow to make sure it was okay. The alcohol made him bold. The man of his dreams was standing not more than a foot from him and was waving bourbon under his nose, demanding Chris tell him if it was okay to use. Then he had added nearly half the bottle.

The first taste of the concoction had Chris gasping for air. Then the second numbed the pain. He had very few memories of the next few hours apart from exchanging sloppy under-the-mistletoe Christmas kisses. Which was a total waste given his dick was alcohol affected. The fickle thing couldn’t have risen to the occasion even if Brad Pitt had walked in the room naked and asking for butt sex. He’d woken on the floor with a mouth full of dead something, Daniel snoring on the sofa, and his butt untouched. Chris left. Walked the two blocks to his home and spent the rest of the day clutching the porcelain god, losing his stomach contents ten times over. But the kiss… he’d wanted more of those. He never got them though.

And now the man he’d tried to forget was standing here looking for a rational response from a normal guy and suddenly Chris’s head was empty. In his head he knew exactly what he should be saying and how he should say it. But just like the nerd in every cliché movie ever, what actually came out was little more than a squeak and probably could only be heard by teenagers and small dogs. He coughed, made a show of patting his throat after the cough, and swallowed before starting again.

“Hey.” Eloquent. Not.

“From college. Chris Matthews, right?” Daniel added carefully. He looked a bit confused, an expression that spoke of worry that he had misstated Chris’s name, or indeed that he didn’t really know Chris at all.

“Muffins,” Chris began, “uhmm, yes, Chris, college, I do… I work… erm… muffins.” Well, that killed his hard-on. Four years of college education and he was reduced to blind idiocy with zero verbal skills at the sight of tall, dark, and sexy.

Daniel smiled. An easy, broad, happy smile that reached his hazel eyes and creased his entire face. And goddammit, there were his dimples, all kind of cute and pitted and— was he actually thinking the word?—dimply.

“Long time no see.” Daniel clearly wanted to carry on a conversation, and Chris was right there with that. It was just a shame that his brain and his mouth were having a lot of trouble connecting with any level of coherence.

“Uh huh,” Chris managed; Daniel always had this way of making him so damn tongue-tied. He shifted from one foot to the next, hoping that he was being subtle. Then, with nothing else he could think of to say, blurted, “What can I get you?” He hadn’t meant his tone to be brisk, but that was the way it came out. Chris cursed inwardly at the social ineptitude that only manifested around really hot guys.

It seemed it was now Daniel’s turn to go quiet as the enthusiastic brightness in his eyes faded a little and his broad shoulders stiffened just a fraction. It didn’t last long, Chris may even have imagined it, it was so brief, then Daniel pulled those same amazingly broad shoulders back, concentrating avidly on the tempting layout of muffins under the glass and finally pointing at the cranberry muffins.

“Twelve of those please.”

Chris boxed them, taking careful interest in what he was doing so he wasn’t looking at Daniel or meeting his eyes. He handed the box to the other man, offering a small smile, but Daniel didn’t exactly smile back. Instead, he handed over a twenty-dollar bill. Chris fumbled with the change, counting the two dollars and twenty-five cents carefully into Daniel’s outstretched palm before the other man looked at him expectantly, then expectation turned to confusion, and finally he turned on his heel and just left.

“Talk about hot.” Chris heard the soft words and the low whistle. He turned to face Amelia, his boss, who was juggling more muffins and a platter of replacement cream cakes.

“Hmmm?” He hadn’t been following what Amelia said, but obviously she was talking about the muffins, right? Chris immediately took the new batch from her, sliding them into the glass case.

“That guy you just served: tall, dark, and sexy.”

“Daniel.”

“Oh. My. God,” Amelia half whispered under her breath. “Christian James Matthews, you slut, you got his name already? It’s true when they say that the quiet ones are the wildest.”

“I knew him in college, okay? ‘M not a slut, Ame,” Chris said. He managed to mutter this before the next person in the winding line demanded his attention with an order for three muffins, one cream cake, a macchiato, a flat white, and a mocha.

He dealt with that customer and the next, thoughts of Daniel being pushed aside by masterful coping with the pre-Thanksgiving, still at-work, need-a-muffin rush.

Thinking back, even the eggnog incident and the fact that after this Daniel seemed to avoid him at college outside study sessions, hadn’t dampened Chris’s crush on the younger man. Still, he left college without taking that crush into the open. The only other thing that stuck in his mind was the memory of his last day at college. Daniel had cornered him in the parking lot and pulled him into a tight hug.

“Thank you for all your help with my coursework,” Daniel had said.

“You’re welcome,” Chris said. His response was the same one he gave to all the first-year students he had helped. Short and to the point.

“I’ll see you in a few years,” Daniel offered.

“Okay.”

It was only later when he was in the car listening to his mom’s crappy choice in music that he considered what Daniel had said. A few years? He doubted he would see the man again.

So what if Daniel had been the subject of more than one of Chris’s right-hand fantasies over the last eleven or so years? So what if he had probably just lost his entire life’s chances of actually talking to the guy as a grown and confident adult. He was never going to see Daniel again. New York was a huge city, and Amelia’s, while popular, was just one coffee shop off the beaten track.

Shame. Because really? Daniel Bailey was still freaking hot.

* * * *

Daniel changed into his uniform in the locker room and then hurried to his desk. He dropped the box of twelve cranberry muffins on the table in the middle of the bullpen. Counting down in his head from ten he wasn’t surprised when it was his partner, Alex Strachen, who made the first comment.

“Muffins are just ever-so-slightly gay, Bailey,” he said. “Hell, sugar, couldn’t you get doughnuts or cookies or something a bit straighter?”

“Ha ha, Strachen,” Daniel said drily. He scooped the box out of Alex’s way and closed the lid. “I’ll just take them to admin then.”

“Don’t be so hasty,” Alex said. He held out a hand and shook it, palm up. “Gimme.”

Daniel placed the box very deliberately in front of his partner and then settled himself on the nearest chair before scooting forward to help himself to a muffin.

“These are from Grand Street?” Alex commented around a mouthful of muffin. He pointed at the address on the side of the box. “That’s like ten blocks away.” He swallowed his mouthful and took a swig of coffee, grimacing at what Daniel knew was disgusting caffeine. “And in the opposite direction from where you live.”

“Great detective work,” Daniel said. He bit into a whole cranberry and the juice of the tart fruit sparked on his tongue. God. These muffins were heaven in a box. He watched as one by one they disappeared as other officers took them. A small part of him regretted sharing. Still, an empty box meant he could go back after Thanksgiving and see Chris again.

“Is this something to do with your guy? Did you track him down?” Alex leaned in and spoke quietly. Despite the fact that every single person in the department knew Daniel was gay, Alex respected that he didn’t want to talk details with everyone getting up into his private life.

“We’ll talk later,” Daniel offered. Unspoken was ‘when we’re out and away from here’.

They settled into the routine of the new day, checking reports, briefing, and organizing themselves into what they needed to do. It was nearly midday before they hit the streets, and the snow was a blessing in that it slowed everything down. People still milled around; cars still forced their way through lights and around corners narrowly missing the feet of the waiting pedestrians. But there was a buzz of excitement in the air. The first snow was always an exciting one, before it melted or, worst case scenario, turned to slush. The bitter November air stung Daniel’s face but it was okay. He was home here.

“So tell me? Did that guy you tracked down, the brother or something, give you good intel?”

Daniel hated to use police information to track down the man he wanted to find and had instead relied on good old-fashioned detective work. Knowing Chris’s brother worked at the Times was a good place to start, asking for details of where his brother worked the next step. Address in hand—and leaving two hours early for work—meant that finally, after all these years, he had seen Chris again. Strange that the man who had given Daniel’s studies purpose had ended up in a coffee shop of all places. In his head Chris had become a teacher, or gone on to further study and become a doctor of English lit. Anything but someone who made coffee and sold muffins for a living.

“Yeah, and he was working behind the counter there.”

“Hence the muffins. Did he recognize you?”

“Yeah he did. I could see he realized it was me immediately.”

“Were you in uniform?”

“Left it here yesterday and changed when I arrived. Didn’t want to scare the guy off at first sight.” Daniel shrugged. “He looked like a scared rabbit, and he wasn’t wearing his glasses.”

“You remember he wore glasses?” Alex laughed. “Man, you have it bad. Have you really liked him for this long?”

Daniel hadn’t shared a lot of his backstory with Alex. His partner knew the headlines: son of rich parents, private education, college degree, cop. He didn’t know about Chris and the effect the senior had had on his freshman self. Why would he? Daniel kept everything very close to his chest. He sighed.

“It’s unfinished business. I should have looked him up way before this.”

Alex looked at him thoughtfully while he deftly avoided colliding with a woman who had stopped to look in a shop window with very little consideration for the people around her. He grimaced but continued walking. They were used to much worse. Everyone out here had an agenda and it was a cop’s job to make sure they handled whatever the City threw at them.

“So why didn’t you look him up?”

Daniel spotted a scruffy Santa with a charity box on the corner and looked pointedly at the guy, who seemed to get the hint and disappeared. He had mastered the art of the steely-eyed take-no-shit glare from Alex and he used it to good effect. Sometimes body language and the uniform were more effective than words.

“The time wasn’t right. I was at college, then battling family, then training, then beat. Only just settled I guess.”

“Dangerous game if he was that important. What if he up and met some other way-tall, hazel-eyed studmuffin and eloped to Tortuga?”

“You calling me a studmuffin, Strachen?”

Alex huffed a laugh and answered a call to his radio. There was a situation a street over and suddenly talking was done.

As they dealt with the details—a dead rabbit, a conman, a wailing kid, and the kid’s mom—Daniel attempted to get his own thoughts in order. Chris had been shocked to see him this morning but he had recognized him. That was a good thing, right? Chris was still just as Daniel remembered. Flustered, cute—not cute, gorgeous—and still with that smile that caused butterflies in the pit of Daniel’s stomach. He would go back soon, maybe even pluck up the courage to ask the guy out.

Decision made, he concentrated on the story of why a four-year-old had found a dead rabbit inside a shoe box.

Happy Hump Day! Today it's Charlie Cochet in the Hot Seat, welcome Charlie...

What book/s are you reading at present?

I’m reading Aimee Nicole Walker’s A Dye Hard Holiday. I absolutely ADORE the Curl Up and Dye Mysteries! I’m also reading Lucy Lennox’s A Very Marian Christmas, book 7 in another fave series of mine, the Made Marian series.

What part of writing a book comes the hardest for you?

The first 20% of the book is always the hardest for me because that’s where I know if everything I plotted out is going to work. It’s also what takes the most patience, because I want to jump right into the romance, but I know I need to write that buildup first. We need the development, the building of the foundation before we can get into the relationship.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

Um, probably about 15 to 20? All in various stages of completion. Only a handful of those I intend to get published.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I tend to plot and work to an outline, though often things deviate from the outline. Sometimes it’s a very rough outline, and there are rare occasions when I just write and see where the characters take me.

How do you keep characters consistent through a story? Do you write out extensive character bibles?

If it’s a big series like the THIRDS, I keep notes and spreadsheets on character traits I’m likely to need to refer back to. I have someone who’s working on a huge story bible for me for the THIRDS that will include more than I’ve ever had the time to put together. For character consistency in behavior, I work out what a character is like before I start writing, and as I write they continue to grow and develop so it’s important to pay attention and make sure as the story continues that you’re staying true to your character.

With the wedding of Jack Frost and Rudy Rein Dear only three weeks away, everyone travels to Jack’s palace in Svalbard, Norway, where the happy couple will exchange vows beneath the northern lights. Festivities have been planned leading up to the wedding, and Dasher eagerly anticipates not just the fun, but staying under the same roof as the blustering winter spirit who’s caught his eye—the King of Frost, Jack’s father.

A long-ago tragedy has left Eirik fearing to ever love again. As the King of Frost, Eirik maintains his distance from everyone, especially the young Christmas elf who insists on intruding on Eirik’s solitude. But Dasher is determined to find a way to show the lonely king that his heart still beats and he shouldn’t fear allowing it to beat for another.

About Charlie

Charlie Cochet is an author by day and artist by night. Always quick to succumb to the whispers of her wayward muse, no star is out of reach when following her passion. From adventurous agents and sexy shifters, to society gentlemen and hardboiled detectives, there’s bound to be plenty of mischief for her heroes to find themselves in, and plenty of romance, too!

Currently residing in Central Florida, Charlie is at the beck and call of a rascally Doxiepoo bent on world domination. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found reading, drawing, or watching movies. She runs on coffee, thrives on music, and loves to hear from readers.

If you’d like to connect with Charlie, just drop her an email at charlie(at)charliecochet(dot)com, or find her on: Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram, and Google Plus.

Check out Charlie’s website at: www.charliecochet.com

There were no kittens, I made those up, and the spider story. The word spider came about because when I’d been talking to my mom about Marcus and the kittens, a tiny spider had crawled over my notes.

I closed the notebook in which I had the names of five kittens with their various characteristics listed.

Mom wanted to meet Marcus, any night, any lunch, anytime.

Which sucked big hairy balls.

Because that was another thing I had made up.

There was no Marcus either.

It fills your heart with happiness and a warm glow because you’ve made such a connection with these men and their family over the course of these stories that they feel real and part of you.
Now as RJ Scott closes the final chapter on Texas we get to see their whole story…what an amazing journey, what a marvelous gift. You’ve left me smiling and full of heartwarming memories. I’ll miss you."
I'm not entirely sure if this eighth and latest book spells the end for the Texas series, though I wouldn't be surprised since this had a feeling of poignancy to it. Whether Texas Gift is it for the Campbell-Hayeses, it's been a wonderful ride, with Riley and Jack not riding off into the sunset but watching every single one together from the D."

Embracing My Crazy "What I found most intriguing about this trip down the future is that through it all, Jack and Riley are still Jack and Riley, and we still love them as much as we ever had from the start. Although the two men have grown in their love for one another, they are still recognizable to the reader as the same men we fell in love with in book one.Another reason I loved and hated--not really, but you know what I mean--about this book is that with each chapter, there is a purposeful completion that lets us know its all ending. I felt the doors closing, sort of the way one feels when they're saying goodby to a loved one. You know its coming, you know its the end, you don't want to say goodbye, but you're so grateful you had a chance to be part of it all. That was what this last installment of the Heart of Texas series did for me. It allowed me to love them one last time, and say goodbye in a meaningful way to two men who allowed me to witness their love. Book 8 is truly a gift I am so grateful to have been given."

And does so in a realistic and even gritty manner at times. For tackling all that, plus the romance, and the continuing overall series arc and pulling them off to a grand effect? Deep Edge (Harrisburg Railers #3) by RJ Scott & VL Locey is a story that’s close to perfect. Truly with each story this series just keeps getting better and better."
Padme's Library - "Truth is, there is so many aspects of this story(and series) that made me smile, laugh, cry, frankly pretty much every emotion out there. I know I use the words a lot in my reviews but it doesn't make them any less true, Deep Edge will warm your heart from page one till the end.
They may not be characters you would meet every day but Scott and Locey present Dieter and Trent in a way that if you ran into them in the grocery store or the gas station you wouldn't look twice. In my opinion, creating characters that are definitely original and yet have that "every day" element to them takes talent and that is what you will find within the pages of Deep Edge and the Harrisburg Railers: talent and plenty of heart."

The Novel Approach - "This short novel is the pinnacle of what a love story can be—sweet and sentimental, heartwarming and uplifting, with a touch of internal conflict for the couple to overcome without things tipping over into hysterics and melodrama. Add fake boyfriends to that—one of my favorite tropes—as well as an opposites attract element, and you have the heart and soul of romance in a smile inducing tale of two men who accidentally fall in love right in the midst of a business transaction.Family and friendship each play their roles in this book as well, and they do so effectively, adding depth and layers to both the narrative and the characters. Love Happens Anyway is a blatant play on the heartstrings, and makes no apologies for it. I loved it, believed in Derek and Luke’s happily-ever-after, and appreciated the emotional resonance woven throughout the story. This one’s an absolute keeper for future holiday re-reading."

This week it's Jamie Fessenden's turn in the Hump Day Hot Seat, welcome Jamie...

What was the last gift you gave someone?

My husband hates receiving gifts, but this year he came home on our anniversary and wished me a happy anniversary, and I'd completely forgotten! I felt terrible, so the next night, I surprised him with something he really needed: a set of gunmetal-finish iron gaming dice. Yes. We are that geeky.

Do you have a character in your head that you have yet to write a story for?

Several. One that I've been wanting to write since college is an android who gets cross-wired with another android, so he can sense what the other will think and feel in different circumstances. This has the side-effect of making him care about another being for the first time since his creation.

Do you take a break from a first draft to get distance from it, dive right into editing, or edit as you write?

I edit as I write, or I find myself stuck. If I don't feel that the earlier parts are flowing smoothly, I can't go on. So I start the day by tweaking what I've written, the move on, sometimes going back to adjust things. By the time I reach the end of a novel, it's fairly polished. Not perfect, as my editor will testify, but in fairly good shape.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I just went back and counted. I have twenty-two stories in progress, at the moment. Some are nearly done. Some may never be completed. But I keep them all in DropBox, and drag old ones when new ones are finished. And of course I'm adding to it all the time. I've never had trouble coming up with ideas (*knock on wood*). My problem has always been finishing.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

It's hard to say how long, because usually I decide to write about things I've been interested in for a while, so I've already read several books on the subject. I tend to start writing, and research as I need to learn things. Sometimes this slows me down, but often I'll realize that, say, the exact flavor and texture of Icelandic "thunder bread" isn't critical to the scene, so I'll bookmark it with a note in Word and move on to write the rest of the scene. Sometimes, as I've learned more about something, it makes it necessary to rework the scene. I had to rewrite the airport scene in A Viking for Yule three times, as I looked at maps of the airport and spoke with a friend who'd been through it. Another point: Google Maps is your friend. It's amazing what you can learn about the layout and look of a strange location through Street View.

After Sam's grandfather nearly died in a blizzard one year ago, Sam has panic attacks in snow storms. So where does his friend Jackie propose they spend the holidays, as the last stop on their trip around the world?

Iceland. Of course.

But there's more in Iceland than snow. When Arnar, a handsome Icelandic man, offers to escort Sam on a several-day tour of the beautiful countryside, they soon find themselves drawn to each other. But Arnar is firmly rooted in his native soil, and Sam has to return to the US in a week to care for his ailing grandfather.

Suddenly, yule can’t last nearly long enough.

NOTE: Though this novel includes characters from "A Cop for Christmas," it is a standalone adventure. It isn’t necessary to read "A Cop for Christmas" first.
Most involve romance, because he believes everyone deserves to find love, but after that anything goes: contemporary, science fiction, historical, paranormal, mystery, or whatever else strikes his fantasy.

Jamie set out to be a writer in junior high school. He published a couple short pieces in his high school’s literary magazine and had another story place in the top 100 in a national contest, but it wasn’t until he met his partner, Erich, almost twenty years later, that he began writing again in earnest. With Erich alternately inspiring and goading him, Jamie wrote several screenplays and directed a few of them as micro-budget independent films. He then began writing novels and published his first novella in 2010.

After nine years together, Jamie and Erich have married and purchased a house together in the wilds of Raymond, New Hampshire, where there are no street lights, turkeys and deer wander through their yard, and coyotes serenade them on a nightly basis.

Jamie recently left his “day job” as a tech support analyst to be a full-time writer.
