Alpha Hero Month: Riley & Jack - The Heart of Texas (Texas #1)

Cover by Meredith Russell

What is an Alpha Man?

The alpha man is always on hand to help others, he’s generous. He has his purpose, but he knows that life isn’t just about accomplishments, it's about leaving a legacy. That legacy is how he made others feel, and how he helps others accomplish their dreams.

When an alpha meets an alpha, it's usually calm, they have deep security in themselves.

The only way that two alpha males can avoid profound conflict is by playfully bantering back-and-forth. The playful nature of the dom/sub gestures allows them to "look past" the attempted dominance/submission.

Family: a group of persons who form a household under one head; a unit of people that love and support each other through good times and bad.

The Book

Riley Hayes, the playboy of the Hayes family, is a young man who seems to have it all: money, a career he loves, and his pick of beautiful women. His father, CEO of HayesOil, passes control of the corporation to his two sons; but a stipulation is attached to Riley's portion. Concerned about Riley's lack of maturity, his father requires that Riley 'marry and stay married for one year to someone he loves'.
Angered by the requirement, Riley seeks a means of fulfilling his father's stipulation. Blackmailing Jack Campbell into marrying him "for love" suits Riley's purpose. There is no mention in his father's documents that the marriage had to be with a woman and Jack Campbell is the son of Riley Senior's arch rival. Win win.

Riley marries Jack and abruptly his entire world is turned inside out. Riley hadn't counted on the fact that Jack Campbell, quiet and unassuming rancher, is a force of nature in his own right.

This is a story of murder, deceit, the struggle for power, lust and love, the sprawling life of a rancher and the whirlwind existence of a playboy. But under and through it all, as Riley learns over the months, this is a tale about family and everything that that word means.

Reviews

On the list of reader's gay favourites 2012, on Jessewave's review site.

Rated 5/5 Ravens at Black Raven Review - The Heart of Texas is a gripping love story and RJ Scott quickly ensnares the reader with this complex family saga. Riley Hayes and Jack Campbell’s marriage of convenience has far reaching consequences as long buried family secrets are revealed and a rich and powerful dynasty topples. Ms. Scott excels at creating perfectly imperfect characters that are realistic and sympathetic.

The Heart Of Texas - Jack

So, I often get asked, if this story was made into a film etc, who would I choose to play the parts?

And that is such a difficult question to answer. After all, my characters are in my head, and your head, and unlikely they will match! I like to leave enough clues in my writing to show you what I thought, but also enough leeway for you to imagine that person in your thoughts.

But.

Hubby and I like to sit for a couple hours and veg completely over a romance film or two. We've seen some really bad ones, and some that are the cream which floats to the top. All of them are trope filled, and I can sit and tell you how the story will evolve for all of them as I watch them, because I love the tropes so much.

Post 'Snow and Secrets' which incidentally, is now with the editor, I needed some of that down  time and we had recorded a film about an injured fireman renting a ground floor room from a 911 operator. The operator has been abandoned by the husband, and has two very nice kids. It was a lovely film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2235348/) and quite emotional in places. I loved it.

But.

I also watched the main actor, and oh my god, he was Jack (if Jack was a fireman and not a cowboy). You may not agree with me, but as I watched I thought, yep, this man could play Jack. Apparently he's an ex soap actor, and he's kind of good in this film. It's weird actually, because when I wrote Texas I very much had Jensen Ackles in my head as Jack, and it turns out that this new actor I found  was in the same soap as Jensen had been in, and I think maybe the same character (Or something, I didn't research too far!).

Anyway, I give you...  Greg Vaughan

Texas series - Free Read

Someone reminded me that I wrote this short story for Valentines Day. I couldn't remember where it was, and I couldn't find it on here, then recalled it was in an anthology with some new authors that I did a while back... So, anyway, here it is... It is set three years after Texas Wedding (so, after Kyle, not that the Legacy Ranch is mentioned anywhere!)

There was a lot of things that Jack adored about Riley. Not least of which he was tall, and strong. Also that he had this way of manhandling Jack when they made love, that had him so hard he could probably draw patterns in Texas dirt with his dick.
