This week's snippet is from The Fireman and The Cop, the first book in the Ellery Mountain Series.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

The cop lifted the mask with shaky fingers. “I like firefighters,” he whispered and coughed.

“Sorry?” Max leaned in to hear him over the noise and chaos outside the rig.

“Firefighters… I can never find a gay one.”

Well, I like cops, Max thought.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

The Book - OUT NOW

Rescuing a cop from a burning precinct is in Max’s job description; falling in love was never part of the deal.

Max Harrison moved from the city to take up a role as assistant to the mayor, while also a volunteer firefighter. When he meets Finn Ryan in Ellery, he falls in lust that burns as hot as the fires being set in town.

Finn Ryan is a cop, and somehow he’s attracted trouble. Going back into a fire to rescue the town drunk is just the start. Now he has to rely on the man he’s falling for to make sure it doesn’t end with him dying.

It seems fitting to have today's snippet from The Christmas Throwaway...

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

"I..." Zach stopped, assessing the lies he could spin, thinking of the stories he had used to persuade people to leave him alone. Nothing crystallized as right for this moment in time. There was something about this cop, a man who seemed not much older than he was, an officer who wasn't a city cop, but a small town cop. He wouldn't be part of the system the same way as the cops in the city who said he should go home. I don't have a home. Maybe...maybe he should tell him the truth.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

The Book - OUT NOW

Christmas is a time for giving - what do you do when no one gives a damn?

For Zachary Weston Christmas means sleeping on a churchyard bench in the freezing snow with nothing better in his future. Thrown out of his home for being gay, he is left without money or, it seems, anywhere to go. Until a stranger shows him that some people do give a lot more than a damn.

Ben Hamilton is a rookie cop in his small home town. He finds a young throwaway, fresh from the city, sleeping on a bench in the churchyard on a snowy Christmas Eve. Can he be the one to give Zachary his own Christmas miracle?

Sticking with the Christmas theme because, well, it's Christmas, this week's Snippet is from my recent release, Love Happens Anyway.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

There were no kittens, I made those up, and the spider story. The word spider came about because when I’d been talking to my mom about Marcus and the kittens, a tiny spider had crawled over my notes.

I closed the notebook in which I had the names of five kittens with their various characteristics listed.

Mom wanted to meet Marcus, any night, any lunch, anytime.

Which sucked big hairy balls.

Because that was another thing I had made up.

There was no Marcus either.

The Book - OUT NOW

Hiring a boyfriend for Christmas; what can go wrong?

Derek is facing yet another Christmas where his life feels out of control. He has a new career that doesn’t feel like his, and parents who would just love to see him settled down. All he needs is a temporary buffer for the parties he has to attend, and for his parents to leave him alone. Enter, Luke.

Luke is twenty-thousand dollars short for the renovations on Halligans; his family’s bar in New York’s Financial District. A favor for a buddy has him agreeing to play the part of boyfriend to a guy with more money than sense.

But when the spirit of Christmas works its magic on the two men, and they begin to fall for each other, Derek runs scared, and Luke needs space.

It doesn’t matter what obstacles you throw in the way of love, or how much you run in the other direction, because, when you’re least expecting it, whether you want it or not, love happens anyway.

My snippet this week is from Texas Christmas (Texas #5), with more trials and tribulations on the Double D Ranch, where family is more than who's blood you carry...

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

Liam Frazier listened from a short distance and wished the ground would swallow him up so that he wouldn’t be found out.

He sat with his knees drawn up to his chest not more than ten feet from Jack Campbell-Hayes. With only a stall wall between them, Liam was close enough to hear every word his boss said. He didn’t mean to eavesdrop—everyone should have been in bed by now and Liam thought he’d have the horse barn to himself.

Fuck.

He was going to be discovered and told to leave the D.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

The barn wasn’t just the barn, it was a euphemism for sex. They hadn't been together in a month, over a month now. How did Riley explain that he’d been at the office, sometimes with the blinds shut, closing out the light, sleeping? How did he explain he didn’t want to see a doctor because the headaches scared him? And how the hell did he tell Jack he was limping because every single one of his muscles hurt, because he was tired, because it was all too much?

“Jack, I’m sorry.”

Today's snippet is from The Heart of Texas (Texas #1). Jack and Riley's final book out in just 11 days, this is where it all began.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

“A year of marriage. I want—I need a partner, to be married for one year and for many reasons. Not the least of which is giving me a win-win situation with my father.”

“Marriage?” What the hell? “You—and me?” Jack managed to form the simple question on sheer shock alone as Riley nodded earnestly, but Jack couldn’t bring himself to move. He just sat there, stunned.

“So, what do you think?” Riley finally asked as Jack rose to his feet.

The Book - OUT NOW

Riley Hayes, the playboy of the Hayes family, is a young man who seems to have it all: money, a career he loves, and his pick of beautiful women. His father, CEO of HayesOil, passes control of the corporation to his two sons; but a stipulation is attached to Riley's portion. Concerned about Riley's lack of maturity, his father requires that Riley 'marry and stay married for one year to someone he loves'.

Angered by the requirement, Riley seeks a means of bypassing his father's stipulation. Blackmailing Jack Campbell into marrying him "for love" suits Riley's purpose. There is no mention in his father's documents that the marriage had to be with a woman and Jack Campbell is the son of Riley Senior's arch rival. Win win.

Riley marries Jack and abruptly his entire world is turned inside out. Riley hadn't counted on the fact that Jack Campbell, quiet and unassuming rancher, is a force of nature in his own right.

This is a story of murder, deceit, the struggle for power, lust and love, the sprawling life of a rancher and the whirlwind existence of a playboy. But under and through it all, as Riley learns over the months, this is a tale about family and everything that that word means.

This was a disaster of epic proportion for the ranches in this area.

Between them they moved the cattle. The going was slow, the impossibility of getting behind some of the herd was heartbreaking. There was nothing they could do for the three that refused to move, slipping and sliding into the mud under the water even though they were roped. Only when the main herd began to swim-walk through deeper water, and then up the hill did two of the cows left there move. He imagined they were the ones with the babies.

And the hits just kept coming.

But when he opened his eyes, nothing had changed. The ceiling was still white, the lampshade blue, and the drapes at the window matched the shade. The drapes. There were drapes at the window. Confusion morphed into panic and he turned his head to the right to get a betterfeel for where he was and he saw…him.

Sprawled awkwardly in the chair, his head back, long limbs this way and that, clearly too big for the chair, was a specter from a past that wouldn’t leave him alone.

Deacon.

I’d had two clients before this, big companies with interesting problems, where my lectures on sensitivity awareness had been well received. I could handle rough feedback, crappy tweets, Facebook discussions about inappropriate shit, but they were corporate clients, not hockey players.

It was me and them.

Alone.

Talking one-on-one with hockey players and the support network around them about how it was okay for one of their players to be sleeping with their coach. Also that gay was good, love was love, and oh yeah, could they stop tweeting shit about anything to do with gender, politics, and sexual orientation, to name three things on my list.

Rafe looked at him and his eyes glittered brightly with emotion. “Maybe you could be the one who makes me the best person I can be.” God, Rafe was going to kill him talking like this.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Deacon said, his tone hard. The years that separated them had been hard and he was left with all kinds of scars on his skin and even darker marks on his soul. This week's snippet is from Changing Lines (Harrisburg Railers #1) written with V.L Locey. Mads is having a heart to heart with his son Ryker (who will have his own book in Feb next year).

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

“Start from the beginning Ry,” I said in my best gentle voice, which wasn’t difficult, as the temper I’d had going on with Ev had vanished as soon as my son wanted me to comfort him.

“I told him I’d talked to you, and he said you knew nothing, that you were used up and finished, and I shouted at him, and he threatened mom, said she was weak, and it scared me, and then he said he was picking me up from yours place because whether I liked it or not I had a meeting with an agent, and now I don’t know what to do.”

To me, it sounded like Ryker was close to hyperventilating. I gently eased him away and wriggled back so there was room between us. He had been crying, his skin flushed and his eyes red. “What do you want to do?” I asked gently.

Viktor stopped. His heart twisted in his chest. Aiden accused him of lying? He wasn’t lying. What kind of relationship could a SEAL have with anyone? He’d been close to dying so many times he’d lost count, and no one understood that, no one could know what it was like to be him, to be part of a SEAL team.

“I’m a SEAL. We kill and maim and do shit you can’t even imagine in your worst nightmares and we do it well, but we don’t do love,” Viktor snapped.

~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~♡~

The Book

When SEAL, Viktor Zavodny, left small town America for the Navy he made sure he never had a reason to return for anything other than visiting family. He wanted to see the world and fight for his country and nothing, or no one, was getting in his way. He fights hard, and plays harder, and a succession of men and women share his bed.

But a phone call from his sister has him using his thirty day down time to go home instead of enjoying his usual thirty nights of random sex and sleep.

What he finds is a mystery on the Green Mountains and the only man attempting to make sense of seemingly unrelated deaths. His childhood friend and first love... Lieutenant Aiden Coleman, Sheriff.

There were reasons Viktor left his home. Not least Aiden Coleman with his small town innocence and his dreams of forever. Now Adam and Viktor need to work together to save lives and prove there is a hero in all of us.

When it's done, if they make it out alive, can Aiden persuade Viktor that he has a reason to stay? Maybe forever?

“Your dad wouldn’t want you hurt like this,” Deacon murmured.
“You didn’t know my dad, you wouldn’t know what he wanted for me.”
“I know his son well enough to understand what kind of man he had to have been. You’re nothing like your Uncle and cousins.”
Rafe’s breath hitched.
“You don’t know me at all.”

Deacon's Law (Heroes #3) - OUT OCTOBER 18

Undercover cop Deacon Shepherd lost everything trying to maintain his cover - the man he loved and the future he craved. He walked away and never looked back because it was the only way to keep Rafael alive.

The last thing he needs is to be dragged back in that world, but an attempt on Rafael's life is enough to make him risk his heart again.

Rafael 'Rafe' Ramirez wakes up in hospital, the victim of a hit and run. He’s stunned when the first face he sees is that of the man who betrayed him and left him for dead three years before. Witness protection had stripped Rafe of his family and friends and now it seems his sacrifice to bring his Uncle to justice was for nothing.

Someone wants Rafe dead and the only way he can stay alive is to go with the murdering drug dealer who broke his heart. But how can he ever trust Deacon, and how can Deacon protect Rafe without falling in love all over again?

#RainbowSnippets - August 5 2017

Rainbow Snippets is a group for LGBTQ+ authors, readers, and bloggers to gather once a week to share six sentences from a work of fiction–a WIP or a finished work or even a 6-sentence book recommendation (snippets are 6 sentences long–one for each colour in the Pride flag). You can find all the snippets by clicking here.

RJ is on holiday this week so I'm taking over and I've picked a snippet from one of my favourite RJ books, Boy Banned and the lovely Corey and Angel. ❤ Rachel

He didn’t like people touching him, didn’t ask to be touched, but something in Angel spoke to him, and he saw compassion and not dismay in Angel’s eyes. “Fuck.” Corey extricated himself fully from Angel’s arms. The only other person he allowed such close contact with him was Aunt Mim, so where had this come from? He’d wanted to say “I can’t bear wearing this stuff, it’s scratchy and it hurts,” but who would he tell? The stylists, who would look at him as if he were an alien? Or Angel, who he didn’t even know that well?

Boy Banned - Out Now

When the only way to win is to hide who you are, how far are you prepared to go?

Reuben “Angel” Jacobs is one step away from giving it all up. Losing a place in the live finals of Sing UK almost kills him. He has no choice but to go home and work for the family business, even though it means giving up his dreams and proving his old bullies right.

Corey Dixon is a rocker at heart. Being on the spectrum means that making sense of other people’s ‘normal’ is hard in itself, let alone in the chaos of a high-powered competition. Singing is his safe space, the only way he can think through the noise in his head. Messing up his audition for the live shows means his journey is over, and it’s the worst day of his life.

The judges throw them a lifeline and create a boy band from the near-miss hopefuls. Angel, Corey, and three others are put together in a room and offered the chance to sing as a group. Agreeing to become part of the new band means Corey has to hide who he is and what Angel has come to mean to him.

Is winning worth the price Corey and Angel have to pay?

Today's snippet is from Gabriel the second book in the Legacy Series, each book is a new story set in the world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch, Texas.

“Where are we going?” Six asked.
“Legacy Ranch. It’s part of the Double D,” Gabriel murmured.
“I want it on record that I insisted we take Gabriel to the police.”
“Noted,” Cam agreed. “Is that the Campbell-Hayes place?”

Gabriel (Legacy #2) Out August 2

Trapped in darkness, can an escort find a man to help him into the light?

Gabriel Reyes never gave in. He fought and was hurt, was abused but escaped with his life. He made his way in the world using the one thing he was good at: sex. He earned a place with a man who controls everything but Gabriel is safe; he’s made it.

Cameron Stafford hires Gabriel for a night, needing nothing more than a pretend boyfriend to get his dysfunctional family off his back. With the money he has in the bank and his own hotel, why won't they just leave him alone? It doesn’t matter that a degenerative disease has stolen his vision, or that his last boyfriend was a bastard who tried to steal from him; for now he has purpose.

When Gabriel and Cam fall for each other, can they find real happiness and, maybe, a forever that will save them both?

Be aware: emotional and physical abuse are depicted on the page in this book.
