Review Round up - July 2015

I'm going to publish a round-up of reviews I have received from blog sites: new books and old. Sometimes I am surprised by a welcome review from a book that has been out a while. I hope to make this a monthly post *looks at my PA - she nods*.

Sexy for Review 5/5 "...I loved the dynamics between Kyle and Ross. They have a friendship based on work and admiration which makes their jobs run flawlessly. Ms. Scott’s portrayal of Kyle—the big, bad stoic owner of Bodyguards, Inc.—yet the gentle giant who delivered a sensual dance with Ross when the two men finally succumbed to their passions. As always in an RJ Scott series, the characters are an integral part of each other’s stories and she never forgets to add the small nuances which make us laugh or swoon. No spoilers, (but Ross gets Adam back).Sensual and sexy, RJ Scott delivers another winner in the Bodyguards Inc. series. Undercover Lovers hit the mark. Full Review

Laquette 5/5
"... By far, this is my favorite Bodyguards Inc book. Ross and Kyle together has been something we've been waiting for since the very first book. Ms. Scott definitely didn't disappoint..." Full Review

Diverse Reader
"... I LOVED how she brought these 2 together. It was a perfect, smack them in the back of the head and wake up. It was exciting, beautiful, tense, everything the realization you both want the same thing should be. I love this series and this book was the best of them all in my opinion..." Full Review

Prism Book Alliance 4.25/5
"...This is easily my favourite book of the series so far. We have waited and waited for Ross and Kyle’s story and in all honesty that wait was more than worth it! When Kyle employed Ross as his PA 2 years ago it was instant lust. Those feelings grew rapidly until Kyle was overwhelmed with how he felt and very much in love. Rather than risk their friendship and make things difficult at work he keeps his feelings bottled up and has absolutely no idea that Ross feels the same way." Full Review

Rainbow Book Reviews 4/5 – “…RJ has created a tale of intrigue and suspense with incredibly strong emotions, especially the feelings between Daniel and Ben.” Full Review

Padme’s Library 4.5/5 – “...Retrograde is a beautifully written tale of tragedy bringing together those that let their stubbornness keep them apart.” Full Review

Padme’s Library 5/5 - “…I loved the way the writer created a connection between the two that was pretty obvious and bordering on cliché on the surface but with each moment they spend in the other's company we quickly learn that there is so much more to both the individual characters and as a pair.” Full Review

Retrograde - Flight HA1710

Cover Art by Meredith Russell

The Book

A standalone Flight HA1710 story set in a series of books based around an event.

Co-Pilot Lachlan Donaghue wakes up in hospital, a survivor of the crash of Flight HA1710, with memory loss and the suspicion that he could be at fault for the tragic accident.

When everything becomes too much he is taken home to hide, back to the small Irish town he grew up in and to the home he once shared with Rory.

Rory Kendrick watches the news, sees every hour of the disaster unfold and somehow just knows that Lachlan was in the middle of it all. What he doesn’t know is that Lachlan will be forced to come back home to hide and to heal.

Lachlan needs a friend, not a lover, but sometimes the lines are just too blurred to make any sense.

The story behind the series

I was watching something on the TV, I don't even know what, but I recall turning to hubby and saying I wanted to write a book about what happened after a plane crash, how it impacted the lives of people who were involved, or who observed.

Then I had the inspiration of asking other authors to write a story in the same vein, all based around characters impacted by a plane crash in Ireland and Flight HA1710 was born.

My book is entitled Retrograde. It is published 12 June and is the first of the six books with the others following weekly from their own presses, by Amber Kell, Sara York, Serena Yates, Clare London and Meredith Russell.

These are stories based around the crash, the man who missed the plane, the steward, the investigator, and just how one incident can change so many lives.

Reviews

Multitaskingmommas Book Reviews - 5/5 - "....I have to say, Retrograde has got to be about the best read I ever read from author RJ Scott. She is usually an author who comes up with the most amazing stories but all of them, at least those that I had read, were sweet romances that made me smile goofy all the time. They were light hearted, they were fast reads, and even if the characters met some angst and frustrations along the way, they never made me feel uncomfortable enough to DNF or fast forward. With Retrograde, it was enough to make me pause and go to the author page once more, just to make sure I did not misread the author name.

This was way better than good...."

Bike Book Reviews - 5/5 - "....First of all let me say, I love this cover and the whole concept of this series, different stories about people on the same flight that crashed, brilliant! This is the perfect book 1 also, the story of the co-pilot!....

....You will love this book friends, the connection between these two men is evident, even as they struggle with if they should act on it again or not! Thank you Rj, for a perfect book 1 in a series that promises to be wonderful!...."

Padme's Library - 4.5/5 - "...Another great turnout by Miss Scott with characters you want to know, even the airline liaison you want to knock down a few pegs, and a love that you know will be rekindled, and a story you can't wait to see just how it all plays out."

Rainbow Book Reviews - 4/5 - "....This is a very intense, emotional love story about two men forced to confront their past demons, admit their mistakes, and move on with their lives. It's beautifully written, with passion and understanding, and most of all, it has a message reminding us that dwelling in the past, blaming each other or ourselves for events that have happened, is totally counterproductive and damages everyone involved. R.J., thanks for the heartwarming story. I am looking forward to reading the other five stories included in the ‘Flight HA1710’ series...."

Prism Book Alliance - 5/5 - "....I’m a bit of an angst fan and the whole premise of the Flight HA1710 stories appealed to me. Retrograde was a perfect jumping off point...."

Excerpt

Chapter 1

The day of the crash

Lachlan Donaghue opened his eyes, cracked them just a little. Something had sideswiped him, glass in his hair, his hands gripping… to his left a person, eyes wide and open, facing Lachlan with not a spark of life left.

And red… orange. And silence. Utter and complete silence.

He closed his eyes.

Rory. Help me.

When he opened them again, this time there was no red, only the blur of a night sky, the black all encompassing. This time there was noise in the silence. A shout, crashes and bangs, and a sense of urgency in the people who stared at him now.

“He’s alive.”

“How the hell is he alive?”

It hurt too much to keep his eyes open.

Tell Rory I’m okay. Don’t let him worry.

“Lachlan? Lachlan Donaghue? How old are you? Who is the Prime Minister? What is the Queen’s name? Lachlan? Can you hear me?”

Who cares? I can't even speak, let alone think.

Lachlan answered… or at least in his head he answered, but his throat was tight, there was pain in his head and neck, and he was staring at whiteness and blinking at bright lights.

Where had the red gone? And the black?

“Lachlan. Open your eyes. Look at me!”

I don’t want to.

“Pupils responsive. Someone get him to the Ulster.”

“He’s triaged for Downe.”

“He’s the fucking first officer. Get him to the Ulster Hospital and away from the scene now.”

Rory, I’m sorry. I should have told you I was sorry.

The TV was loud, discordant, and scary with red and orange against black, and they were shouting at him from the screen. People walked around him, all the time talking about the TV—or was that the TV itself? Nothing made sense.

“The Captain is dead.” The words spun in his head, people talking around him; a chaos of noise.

“Not… Andrew.” Lachlan murmured in despair. The staring eyes, the absolute stillness and quiet—Andrew was dead. Is everyone dead? Am I dead? What kind of hell was he in where they pushed him and held him, then took the pain away with needles?

“Lachlan? Can you hear me? My name is Dr.…”

The words faded, and he looked past the man who stared at him, looking instead at the screen, hearing the words all pilots dreaded to hear. Death. Destruction. Crash.

His picture flashed on the screen labeled in yellow: Lachlan Donaghue, First Officer. Then there were safety records… and red … and orange.

“And do you think, taking this into consideration, that the crash was deliberate? An act of terrorism? Or one of the pilots deliberately flying the plane into the ground?” A soft but insistent voice came from the TV.

“There is nothing to indicate that at this moment. Neither of the black boxes have been located at this time—”

“Do you know your pilots? Can the airline categorically say that the crash of Flight HA1710 was not pilot error?”

“It’s too soon to comment—”

“Can you say that?”

Pause.

“No. No we can’t.”

My wonderful new PA

I finally did it, I now have a PA to help me with the *back end* stuff for RJ Scott. It's been five years and I finally came to the realisation that I have to let go of some of the stuff that stops me writing.

So welcome to Janet who says she can organise me and says I will have more time to focus on my writing. I am beyond excited!

If you receive an email from rjscott.team@gmail.com then that is Janet, going about her business and organising the unorganisable!

New Releases

Max and The Prince is with you Friday (only four more days). This is book 3 in the Bodyguards Inc series and follows the story of Max, who we first met in the short story I wrote before Christmas.

Did you miss the short? If you did then it is here: The Curious Case of the Missing Stapler

Max is assigned to a Max-is-A-University-Student job which he is horrified with, added to which his charge is royalty in hiding. Not a good combination, and when death visits the University Max has to figure out who the murderer is before Prince Lucien becomes the next victim.

Max and the Prince will be available at All Romance and Amazon 27 March, and at other third parties shortly thereafter.

For a Rainy Afternoon will be available to read 1st April from Dreamspinner Press. It is currently available for pre-order from AllRomance and Amazon. It is book 1 in a series of 5 linked-by-theme books with the amazing Amber Kell, Amy Lane, Marie Sexton and Mary Calmes. I'm excited and nervous to be among such illustrious company... :)

Robbie runs a small Post Office made from a converted Station House in a village northwest of London and his world is rocked when he finds love in unexpected places. He inherits a sealed box which includes several rare first editions and a cookery book. Only when the secrets of the ingredients in a particular recipe are finally revealed does everything begin to make sense... and a love story that began seventy years ago is finally uncovered.

Work In Progress

My current WIP is The Summer House, book 1 in my English Hearts series. A man with the weight of titles and money meets a Veterinarian and abruptly his entire life changes.

Ashby 'Ash' Sebastian Sterling-Haynes has had a lot of boyfriends, but he's never found the one.

Veterinarian, Connor Lawson is much happier working with animals than with people.

When Ash comes into the practice with a cat that has been in a fight Connor hides in his office because this Ashby guy is all kinds of dangerous. Too hot, too rich, too titled, and way too sexy for his own good.
Can two men who refuse to believe in love ever learn that love is the easy part of the journey to forever?

This book will be with you end May. :)

Retrograde - Flight HA1710

Book 1, in a linked--by-event series written with Amber Kell, Meredith Russell, Serena Yates, Clare London and Olivia Erikson.
Co-Pilot Lachlan Donaghue wakes up in hospital, a survivor of the crash of Flight HA1710, with memory loss and the suspicion that he could be at fault for the tragic accident. When everything becomes too much he goes home to hide, back to the small Scottish town he grew up in and to his family home.

Rory Kendrick watches the news, sees every hour of the disaster unfold but never thinks that Lachlan was in the middle of it all. Or that his friend will be forced to come back home to hide and to heal. What Lachlan needs is a friend, not a lover, but sometimes the lines are just too blurred to make any sense.

Print Books

The Bucket List was released as an e-book in January and proved to be a popular book. I was so pleased with lots of wonderful reviews and comments. The book has just been made available in print.

Rainbow Gold Reviews - 10/10 - "....Beautiful and heartbreaking in one emotionally charged, well written novella.

....This novella, well I can’t say enough good things about this one. I loved it and would highly recommend this to you if you are looking for a story with some heartache and a whole lot of love...."

Bike Book Reviews - 5/5 - "....This book is a lovely little treasure that I can't wait for you to read! Thanks Rj for another beautiful read that will be at the top of everyone's re-read list!...."

Prism Book Alliance - 4/5 - "....Scott has the ability to write characters who are real without being over-drawn. She leaves many details just out of sight, because they are not essential to the core of her story. We are not handed great amounts of angst, nor are there horrific traumas unexpectedly revealed. Yes, there is a mystery that needs explaining; and there is sorrow in Mark’s youth that needs to be exorcised. Scott gives us just enough to help us embrace both Jason and Mark for all the good things they are, and to understand their motivations as they rediscover each other through their shared love of Andrew and grief over his untimely death.
