Hump Day Interview - Charlie Cochet

Happy Hump Day! Today it's Charlie Cochet in the Hot Seat, welcome Charlie...

What book/s are you reading at present?

I’m reading Aimee Nicole Walker’s A Dye Hard Holiday. I absolutely ADORE the Curl Up and Dye Mysteries! I’m also reading Lucy Lennox’s A Very Marian Christmas, book 7 in another fave series of mine, the Made Marian series.

What part of writing a book comes the hardest for you?

The first 20% of the book is always the hardest for me because that’s where I know if everything I plotted out is going to work. It’s also what takes the most patience, because I want to jump right into the romance, but I know I need to write that buildup first. We need the development, the building of the foundation before we can get into the relationship.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

Um, probably about 15 to 20? All in various stages of completion. Only a handful of those I intend to get published.

Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you?

I tend to plot and work to an outline, though often things deviate from the outline. Sometimes it’s a very rough outline, and there are rare occasions when I just write and see where the characters take me.

How do you keep characters consistent through a story? Do you write out extensive character bibles?

If it’s a big series like the THIRDS, I keep notes and spreadsheets on character traits I’m likely to need to refer back to. I have someone who’s working on a huge story bible for me for the THIRDS that will include more than I’ve ever had the time to put together. For character consistency in behavior, I work out what a character is like before I start writing, and as I write they continue to grow and develop so it’s important to pay attention and make sure as the story continues that you’re staying true to your character.

A Dex and Sloane (Thirds Series) Valentine's Day Special - Charlie Cochet

A Dex and Sloane Valentine's Day Special

Where could he be?

Sloane stepped into the canteen, and looked around. Where had his boyfriend gotten to? It was always worrisome when Dex went missing. Who knew what mischief he’d get up to. Actually, Sloane knew. He’d witnessed plenty of instances where an unsupervised Dex resulted in chaos. It was especially worrisome when Dex was being secretive.

Did Dex really think Sloane hadn’t noticed him take Sloane’s keys that morning and sneak off to his car? He’d put something in the trunk, then when they’d arrived at work, he told Sloane he’d meet him upstairs. Sloane had changed into his uniform, and when he reached their office, still no Dex.

Spotting Cael and Rosa sipping hot drinks at one of the tables, Sloane headed over. “Hey, any of you seen or heard from Dex? I’ve been tried calling him on his com, but he’s not answering.”

Rosa looked thoughtful. “The last I saw him, he was with Hudson. I went to Hudson’s office to ask him about some supplies, and Dex was there.” She looked to Cael. “Have you seen him today?”

“About an hour ago when I went down to Unit Beta to follow up on some intel. He was by the canteen.”

Why the hell was Dex is Unit Beta? Whatever he was doing, Sloane hoped poor Zach wasn’t involved.

“Thanks, guy.” Sloane headed back to Unit Alpha. On the way to his office, he was stopped by Letty.

“Hey, Sloane. Dex had been looking for you.”

Sloane threw his hands up. “For crying out loud. Where is he?”

Letty looked around. “He was here a second ago. Maybe he went back to your office.”

“Thanks.” If Dex wasn’t there, Sloane was just going to wait for him. He was getting tired of running around HQ. Why was Dex being so damn secretive? He walked into his office and figured he’d had his answer.

A large white foamboard poster was propped against his desk. It was a Valentine’s Day letter from Dex. They had plans tonight which included dinner, a movie, and a gift exchange. Sloane was looking forward to it. He hadn’t expecting Dex to do anything for him at work. It was incredibly sweet.

Reading it, Sloane couldn’t help his big smile or the way his heart did a little flip. That big dope. His boyfriend was just adorable. His earpiece beeped, and he answered.

“Brodie.”

“Did you get my present?” Dex asked, sounding excited.

Sloane chuckled as he took a seat behind his desk, and turned the letter toward him. “I did. I’m looking at it now. Though I gotta say, I’m not very good at Mad Libs.”

“Why would you need to be good at Mad Libs?”

“Because there’s a bunch of blank spaces where certain words should be.”

The colorful swear words that followed told Sloane those blank spaces shouldn’t be blank.

“I’m on my way,” Dex grumbled.

Several minutes later, the commotion outside his office drew Sloane’s attention, and he headed out into the bullpen to find Dex glaring accusingly at his fellow agents.

“All right, which one of you candy-bar-thieving jerkfaces is responsible for ruining my Valentine’s Day card?”

Candy bars. That made so much more sense now. Aw, Dex had made him a candy gram.

Just as he’d said the words, Ash walked by eating a Lion Bar. The irony was not lost on Sloane. Dex let out a gasp.

“You thief!”

Uh-oh. Dex lunged at Ash, and Sloane caught him before his screeching little spider monkey could crawl all over Ash to disembowel him, or at least attempt to.

“That was part of my boyfriend’s candy gram!”

Ash looked from Dex to Sloane to his candy bar before shrugging, taking another bite, and walking off. Sloane held on tight.

“Come back here, you—”

A candy bar wrapped crinkled behind them and they turned to find Hobbs tearing through a wrapper. When he realized Dex was staring at him, his eyes widened.

“Where did you get that?” Dex asked, thrusting a finger at Hobbs’s chocolate bar.

Hobbs motioned to his hair and made spikes then put his hand to his heart.

“That thieving little pineapple!”

Sloane let out a bark of laughter before he could stop himself. Dex stopped trying to get away from him and pouted.

“They ate your card, Sloane.” He pointed to their office, and Sloane followed him in. Dex fished his phone out of his pocket, unlocked it, and scrolled through his photos. “It was perfect.” He held the phone out to Sloane.

“Aw, baby, it was perfect. Thank you.” Sloane pulled Dex into his arms, and kissed him, smiling against Dex’s lips when Dex melted against him. “I promise it’s not ruined. You’re sweeter than any candy bar.” He nibbled on Dex’s ear. “I can’t wait to taste you tonight.”

Dex hugged him tight. “Happy Valentine’s day, babe.”

“Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart.”

The Book

In a matter of days, Dex has been kidnapped, tortured, killed, revived, become half-Therian, offered the chance to become a spy, and accepted a proposal to marry his jaguar Therian boyfriend, Sloane Brodie. It’s been a lot to take in, and although Dex is still trying to wrap his head around everything that’s happened, he knows he has to move forward. After the events of Smoke & Mirrors, Dex and Sloane find themselves in one of the most frightening situations of all: revealing the truth to their Destructive Delta family. When the dust settles, nothing will ever be the same, and it’s up to Dex to prove that in the face of change, the one thing that will always remain the same is family.

Twelve Days of Christmas: Day 12 Charlie Cochet

And last but not certainly not least, I'd like to introduce the fabulous Charlie Cochet...

Hello, all! Thank you so much for joining me here today, and a big thank you to RJ for having me! This year Dreamspinner Press will be releasing the fifth book in my North Pole City Tales series, Disarming Donner. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the series, it centers around the Rein Dear, Mayor Kringle’s handsome and dashing Christmas elves who fly around the world on Christmas Eve in their biplanes delivering Christmas joy.

Throughout the series, we follow several of the Rein Dear as they fall in love, from the Captain of the Rein Dear Squadron, Rudy Rein Dear, and the imposing Jack Frost, to the sassy Vixen and his timid Toy Soldier Army Lieutenant, Vale Frost. This year we have Donner, a posh, sensible Rein Dear who catches the eye of Calder, a Dockalfar. Calder is nothing what Donner expects from a dark elf, and soon his life is turned upside down, and he is not happy about it.

Writing this world has been so much fun, from coming up with elf curses like “plum pudding!” to each of the Rein Dear with their distinct looks and personalities. I get to immerse myself in the scents and sounds of the holidays every time I step back to North Pole City with its twinkling fairy lights and jingling bells. What’s your favorite part of the holiday season?

Leave your comment below for a chance to win a Rein Dear goody bag! Open internationally.

Love,

Charlie

Disarming Donner Blurb

As a beloved Rein Dear and Christmas elf for Mayor Kringle, Donner prides himself on his flawless reputation, good sense, and wise decisions. Donner never does anything until he’s thought it through properly. He’s certainly not one to get flustered, infuriated, or fall prey to romantic nonsense. At least not until the most unlikely of elves begins chipping away at Donner’s defenses.

Calder is a Dockalfar—a dark elf. He’s wicked, untrustworthy, and armed with lethal magic. At least that’s what everyone thinks. It’s easy for them to believe the worst and mistrust him before they’ve even spoken to him, but Calder is out to prove that he’s more than his Dockalfar blood, especially to a certain Rein Dear who has caught his eye. But it will take more than sweet words for Donner to admit what’s in his heart.

New Release: Smoke and Mirrors by Charlie Cochet

Hello, all! Welcome to the next stop on the Smoke & Mirrors blog tour, celebrating the release of the 7th book in the THIRDS series. In Against the Grain we were introduced to the Therian Intelligence Network or TIN, the Therian equivalent of the CIA. Throughout books 5 and 6, TIN is still a bit of a mystery. We’ve been introduced to some key players, but they’re still very much in the shadows. We don’t know who they are, what they do, or if they pose a threat to our Destructive Delta crew.

In Smoke & Mirrors TIN plays a much bigger role, and we get to see more of them and their operatives. By now we’ve learned that TIN operatives are often referred to as TIN Men, nicknamed after the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz because he had no heart, and TIN Men are rumored to be heartless. They’re known for doing whatever is necessary to get the job done. Although this may be true at times, there’s also a great deal of myth surrounding them. These guys are the best of the best. No one sees them coning until it’s too late, and sometimes they’re not seen at all.

Their signature wardrobe is a black suit, white shirt, and a specific color tie. No two TIN operatives wear the same color tie. When hired, each operative selects a hue, and the hex number is how they’re identified in all communications. No names are used in any documentation. Aliases and legends are often assumed during missions or covert operations. Only the most skilled Therians are recruited, and once training is complete, a TIN operative is highly trained, skilled, and deadly.

TIN might consist of purely Therian operatives, but they do possess Human assets. When a TIN operative is brought on board, they are required to have a ready team of assets in place, and as they take on assignments, build their list of reliable associates. But just who are TIN, and what do they do? Much like the Human CIA, TIN deals with national security, some domestic, but mostly foreign intelligence, usually concerning Therians. With the dawn of Therians, came those looking to exploit and abuse their power. TIN and the Human CIA work toward a world where no one side achieves complete control over the other. A never ending war most often unseen by civilians.

Welcome to the Therian Intelligence Network.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Life for Dexter J. Daley has never been easy, but he’s always found a way to pick himself back up with a smile on his face. Taken from his home, and the arms of his boyfriend and THIRDS partner, Sloane Brodie, Dex finds himself in a situation as mysterious and lethal as the Therian interrogating him. Dex learns what he’s secretly believed all along: his parents’ death wasn’t an accident.

Discovering the whole truth about John and Gina Daley’s homicide sets off a series of events that will change Dex and Sloane’s lives forever. As buried secrets rise to the surface and new truths are revealed, Dex and Sloane’s love for each other is put to the test, with more than their relationship on the line. If traversing the waters of murder and secret government agencies wasn’t enough, something inexplicable has been happening to Dex—and nothing will ever be the same.

Book Review - Hell & High Water (THIRDS #1) Charlie Cochet

Part of my 2016 Series re-read project

When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth.

Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.

Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous.

When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.

Review

I first read this book a while back, but decided this series was to be my next re-read series (my first was Marie Sexton and her Coda series!)

I absolutely love this book, the first in the series. I love Dex so much, and Sloane... and the rest of the team. Unique world building and a solid story makes this an awesome start to the series. Drama, angst, lust, guns, bad guys and just everything else you need :)

Full list of books:

ThirdsHQ.com - With the panic and growing number of casualties both Human and Therian during the riots of the 1980s, it was clear something had to be done to ensure public safety, and offer an unbiased justice system for Therian citizens. After a new Therian legislation branch of the government was established, along with the implementation of Therian laws, officials answered the cries of its citizens for a new law enforcement agency equipped to handle Therian threats.

In 1990, the Therian-Human Intelligence, Recon, Defense, Squadron -or- the THIRDS, opened its doors, pairing every Human element within the organization with a Therian one, in the pursuit of justice for all species.

Charlie sums up the year and looks forward

Hello all! Thank you so much for stopping by, and a big thank you to RJ for having me! Are you excited about the new year as I am? It’s funny how the ending of one year and beginning of another can have such an impact on us. It hits midnight, and we’re facing a world of possibilities. For many, it’s like a clean slate. A chance to do what you wanted to do the previous year, but for some reason or another weren’t able to.

For me, a new year is exciting because there’s just so much to look forward to! I’m not one to set resolutions, because they’ve never worked for me. I’m more of a short-term and long-term goal setter. I write down things I hope to accomplish in the coming year, and work out what I need to do to accomplish those goals.

In 2016 I’ll be attending the RT Booklovers convention for the first time. I’m even on a panel. Am I nervous? You bet. It’s my biggest convention yet. This year I decided it was time. Time to take the next step in my career. Next year is all about moving forward, about taking what I learned in 2015 about myself, my writing, the genre, and expanding on that. Growth is important, not just on a professional level, but a personal one. Here’s to a new year of love, laughter, and endless possibilities!

Blurb: As the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Being in love isn’t the only danger he and Ash face as wounds reopen and new secrets emerge, forcing them to question old loyalties.

I've been waiting for Cael's story since I first started reading this series. Loved him and Ash so much. Roll on the next book.

CommonExcerpt

At one point, Ash felt Cael’s leg pressed up against his, and it was ridiculous how happy the tiny gesture made him. If it was even a gesture. Ash swiftly put it off to being an accident, but then a little later, Cael reached over and wiped a thumb over the corner of Ash’s mouth, telling him he had a breadcrumb.

“You should have seen him,” Dex said with a laugh. “He looked so adorable with his cheetah fuzz shaped into spikes, from his head down to his back. Like a little spotted punk rocker.”

Maddock shook his head at Dex. “It took me two hours to wash all the hair spray off your brother’s fur.”

“We were pretending to be Guns N’ Roses,” Cael explained. “Dex was singing ‘Welcome to the Jungle,’ and I was backup sing—er, chirping.”

Ash laughed and playfully bumped Cael’s shoulder. “I’m going to have to agree with Dex. That’s adorable.” Even in his Therian form, Ash thought Cael was the sweetest thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Cael could be in his Therian form among thousands of cheetahs, and Ash would be able to point him out. His little gestures, the heart shape of his nose, or the way he chirped away, as if anyone not in their Therian form might understand him if he tried hard enough.

Dex grabbed Sloane’s arm. “Tell me you recorded that. Doesn’t matter. I have witnesses.” Dex stood and motioned to all of them. “Witnesses! You all heard it. Ash said he agrees with me.”

“Oh, good Lord. We’re never going to hear the end of this,” Maddock sighed, getting up to clear the dishes.

“Do you realize how epic this moment is?” Dex said, helping clear up.

“It’s not really that epic,” Maddock replied.

Dex let out an exaggerated gasp. “Where have you been living? Ash Keeler has agreed with something I, Dexter J. Daley, has said.”

“About your brother being adorable. Not exactly earthshattering. He’s thought that since they met.”

The table fell into silence as they all gaped at Maddock. Well, this was news to Ash. What the hell? Seeming to notice the quiet, or more likely the lack of Dex talking, Maddock looked up.

“What are you, fish? Close your mouths.”

Four mouths promptly closed.

“It’s not rocket science. I’ve known that boy since he joined, and he’s threatened every agent he’s ever met with kicking their ass. Except for Cael.”

Hard to argue with that. It was the truth.

Dex frowned at Ash. “You threatened to kick Hobbs’s ass?”

Ash nodded. “Yep.” Was it his first week of being on the job? He was pretty sure it was the first week.

“Dude, that’s not cool. Hobbs is awesome.”

“He can also be a pain in the ass. Plus when we first met, I didn’t know he had selective mutism. I asked him a question, and he wouldn’t answer me. He’d whisper to Calvin, who’d answer for him. I got pissed off and told him if he didn’t tell me himself, I’d kick his ass.” Ash had never met a tiger Therian as big and insecure as Hobbs. The whole encounter had left him confused. Here was their new demolitions expert, and he couldn’t talk. How the fuck was he going to communicate with his team? Ash wasn’t proud to admit he’d had a shit fit. He understood the THIRDS was about equality and representation when it came to hiring, but he had been genuinely concerned about the safety of his team. Not long after, Ash had seen how wrong he’d been about Hobbs. Not that he’d admitted it.

Dex let out a sound of disgust. “Dude, not cool.”

“I said I didn’t know. I apologized afterward, and that’s saying something.”

Ash got up to help clear the dishes, with Dex going on about how he should really think about using some of those scented candles Rosa had gifted him. Ash proceeded to flip him off.

When Cael stood to help, Ash put a hand to his shoulder.

“Relax, I’ve got this.”

He gave Cael a wink and walked the dirty dishes to the kitchen with Dex yammering on behind him. The guy was like a fucking mosquito buzzing in your ear and trying to suck the life out of you. Ash placed the dishes in the dishwasher, giving grunts and one-word replies. He grabbed the dishes from Dex and put those in as well. He wished he could stick Dex in there. Finally someone up there decided to give him a break, and Dex left the kitchen, singing some stupid song about a lion sleeping tonight or something.

Ash frowned at Maddock. “Does he never shut up? How the hell did you live with this for so long?”

“It’s called patience,” Maddock replied. “Not exactly your forte.”

“Oh, I can be patient. That’s not what’s required when dealing with your oldest. I’d say sedative is more the word you were looking for.”

Maddock laughed. “Just get in there, Keeler.”

GRL Blog Tour - Charlie Cochet

Hello all! Charlie Cochet here joining in on the GRL blog tour. A big thank you to the fabulous RJ Scott for hosting me today! Just a little over a month left until GRL is here again. I can hardly believe how fast the time has gone. Feels like only yesterday I left Georgia. What an amazing time! I can't wait to once again see old friends and meet new ones. This is my third year attending, but my first as a Featured Author, and I'm so excited!

It will be my first year with several new releases, including my fun new law-enforcement shifter series, the THIRDS. Thanks to the THIRDS, swag was a little easier to come up with this year. Since the team includes Big Cats, I had a lot to work with. There's all kinds of nifty animal print swag, as well as swag for the guys: Team Sexy-Pants, Team Cobbs, Team Cash, and Team Heb! There will also be swag dedicated to Dex's 80s obsession. Sadly, there will be no Cheesy Doodles on offer, but there will be a host of other fun items!

THIRDSBanner450

As soon as my panel session is confirmed, I'll be sharing it with you as well, and I'm so excited about it! I'll also be celebrating my newest release A Rose by Any Other Name, which is out on Friday, Sept 12th. A Rose by Any Other Name is a fun roaring twenties romance filled with bootlegged liquor, scandalous debauchery, sassy cabaret boys, society gents, dangerous gangsters, and more! You can expect some fun themed swag on that as well!

Swag aside, I'm looking forward to chatting with folks the most. So don't be shy. If you see me, stop by and say hello. If you're not attending, don't fret, there are lots of online events happening in honor of GRL with all kinds of goodies on offer. So who's going to GRL this year? Who hopes to go sometimes in the near future? What are you looking forward to the most?
