Reviews - eBook

Scattered Thoughts & Rogue Words Texas Gift is like sitting down on a couch with your family with their family albums and going through it with them as they tell you the stories from each picture, pointing out every loving detail with laughter, some sniffles and oh, so much joy. It fills your heart with happiness and a warm glow because you’ve made such a connection with these men and their family over the course of these stories that they feel real and part of you.

Now as RJ Scott closes the final chapter on Texas we get to see their whole story…what an amazing journey, what a marvelous gift. You’ve left me smiling and full of heartwarming memories. I’ll miss you.

Mirrigold: Mutterings & Musings - Throughout it all though, the love which anchors Jack and Riley together is only strengthened by the trials they have to pass through and the result is a book which takes the story of the Double D Ranch and lays down a solid foundation for this whole saga to go into the future together. This is another wonderful Happy Ever After to add to the Texas series.

Embracing My Crazy - What I found most intriguing about this trip down the future is that through it all, Jack and Riley are still Jack and Riley, and we still love them as much as we ever had from the start. Although the two men have grown in their love for one another, they are still recognizable to the reader as the same men we fell in love with in book one.Another reason I loved and hated--not really, but you know what I mean--about this book is that with each chapter, there is a purposeful completion that lets us know its all ending. I felt the doors closing, sort of the way one feels when they're saying goodbye to a loved one. You know its coming, you know its the end, you don't want to say goodbye, but you're so grateful you had a chance to be part of it all. That was what this last installment of the Heart of Texas series did for me. It allowed me to love them one last time, and say goodbye in a meaningful way to two men who allowed me to witness their love. Book 8 is truly a gift I am so grateful to have been given.

Gay Media Reviews - What is totally clear in the book, is the love between Jack and Riley, which only seems to get stronger the more years they are together. Add into this the love they have for their children, and this is one family that just keeps growing and growing.

Chapter One

Riley needed to apologize. Right now.

He’d fucked up big time, and he should have seen it coming, because everything he did went in cycles. He and Jack hadn’t argued in so long and maybe the tension that had been building inside Riley had needed an outlet; he’d provoked the argument. He’d pushed and prodded and sulked and shoved at Jack until Jack had snapped.

Not in loud, shouting temper, or anything like what Riley deserved. No, Jack had gone deathly quiet.

Absolutely. Utterly. Quiet.

Riley shouted at him, got everything out of his system, felt the weight of it all lessen by throwing it at Jack and what had happened? He’d stood there at first, confused, and then steadily calmer. Weirdly calmer.

They argued; no normal marriage went without arguments over things as important as the kids and as trivial as picking up wet towels. But they resolved things, Jack/Riley was a unit that worked. They sometimes bickered and teased, they shouted rarely, and on the odd occasion there would be sulking. Mostly from Riley. He considered it as thinking time but Jack just called him on his sulking like a child.

Their arguments always ended in love; talking, kissing, complete forgiveness that could only come when two people understood and loved each other.

This morning though, he’d made Connor cry, Lexie scowl, and Max hide under the table with Toby. Jack hadn't even stayed for that. The crying, scowling and hiding had happened after he’d left.

“Why are you shouting at Pappa!” Connor shouted back at Riley. “Stop shouting.” Then he’d started to cry, and Riley’s heart had broken into a million pieces. He’d sat between a crying Connor, and a sullen, angry Lexie and tried to explain that he had a bad headache and he didn’t mean to shout. For headache, read migraine, tight painful migraine that blurred his vision and made him feel sick. He’d taken meds and the sharp edges of the glass in his head were easing, but he couldn’t think straight. Connor stopped crying.

“You were so mean,” Lexie summarized, but she did give Riley a hug and kiss him on the forehead to make it all better.

Max on the other hand, while not angry with Riley and the shouting, was still under the kitchen table with Toby. The black lab, Riley’s black lab, was between Max and Riley in a protective furry wall.

“It’s okay Tobes, I got this,” Riley tried to fold all six-four of himself under the wood. He got caught on a bench, his neck burned, his stomach was in knots, but nothing was going to stop him from getting to Max. Toby did eventually move to one side but not too far. Toby may well have been Riley’s dog at the start, but he and Max were inseparable now.

“Max, buddy?” he began, and Max at least looked up at him for a split second. “You okay?”

“M’okay,” Max said. “You’re noisy.”

At least he wasn’t rocking, or stimming. He was just sitting with his dog in his favorite place under the kitchen table.

“Is everything okay?” Carol said from behind him. He scrambled back and brushed himself off. “Riley?”

“I shouted,” Riley explained simply.

“At the kids?” Carol asked, aghast, as if that was the ultimate sin in her eyes. Which, to be fair, it was in Riley’s as well. He and Jack didn’t shout, they cajoled, and bargained, and ran a happy house. Most of the time, anyway. Just not this morning.

“No, at Jack.”

“Is Max okay?” she peered under the table and smiled at Max. He adored her, the kids all loved their nanny, probably quite a bit more than they loved their dad today.

“He seems fine.” Riley peered out of the window at where Jack had gone. The damage had been done, but Connie and Lexie were chatting to each other, Max was with Carol and he needed to go and make things right with Jack.

“I think we’re okay in here,” Carol said, “Go find Jack.”

Riley shot her a grateful glance, and as he left the kitchen he heard Lexie telling Carol that her Pappa had a headache and that she’d kissed it better. When he closed the door it was just him and the ranch and finding Jack. It didn’t take him long; he was outside their barn, looking up at the siding, with his feet apart and his arms crossed over his chest.

Riley inhaled the fresh morning air and pulled back his shoulders. He could do this; he could ignore the pain in his head now it had lessened a little, he could push back the nausea, and he could go and apologize to Jack for being a fucking idiot.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured, coming to a stop next to Jack, only a few inches separating their arms. Jack didn’t move.

“It’s okay.” Although it didn’t sound okay at all. Okay was one of those words that meant nothing in the context of an argument, it was a word that plastered over cracks in a relationship. Okay was quiet and tight-lipped silences and Riley recalled okay from when he was a kid.

He hated okay.

“It’s not okay, I have a headache and I didn’t mean any of what I said.”

“You didn’t mean to say that life would be easier if you didn’t have to listen to me?” Jack’s voice was low and serious, and Riley winced.

“You were saying too much, and I couldn’t think.”

Their discussion had started in the bedroom.

“I asked if you’d made an appointment to see someone about the headaches.”

“I know—”

“And why you were limping again—”

“Jack—”

“And why you weren’t sleeping, and why you spent so much time at the office, and why the fuck have we not used the barn in over a month?”

The barn wasn’t just the barn, it was a euphemism for sex. They hadn't been together in a month, over a month now. How did Riley explain that he’d been at the office, sometimes with the blinds shut, closing out the light, sleeping? How did he explain he didn’t want to see a doctor because the headaches scared him? And how the hell did he tell Jack he was limping because every single one of his muscles hurt, because he was tired, because it was all too much?

“Jack, I’m sorry.”

“You’re not, Riley, because you won’t listen to me.” Jack pointed at the barn. “I’m thinking we turn this into a games room for the kids.”

Riley gripped Jack’s arm. “No, what the hell?” His tension fled and in its place was panic. This was their space. Sometimes they came out here to talk, to hide away from the world, but it was also the one place they had the hottest sex he’d ever experienced. He wanted that again, but he was so tired, every time he turned over in bed his neck hurt, and his head pounded, and his leg ached, and he was fucking tired of it all. “Jack, I’m sorry, don’t…”

Jack turned to face him, and his expression wasn’t angry. “Either you go to the doctor, right here, right now, or I start clearing the place for a pool table.” He looked deadly serious, and Riley couldn’t tell if this was an empty threat. Then Jack softened, cradled his face and pressed a kiss to his forehead. “Riley, please.”

Just those two words pierced the fear in Riley, he couldn’t stop the pain, or the threat of being sick, or not sleeping, but whatever was wrong, Jack would be there for him.

“I’m scared,” Riley murmured.

Jack gathered him close. “You think I’m not?”

“Please don’t,” Riley said against Jack’s neck. His words sounded slurred and fear made him sway. What the hell? “Please don’t let me chase you away.”

“I won’t.”

And that was the last thing he heard as his world went to black.

Chapter 1

Winter 2014

“What the hell are you doing, Rafe?” Deacon asked, and edged closer, carefully.

Rafe was too near the edge of the lake in the darkness, and he didn’t want to spook the man. He’d been watching him from a distance, but when Rafe stepped closer to the inky depth of water, Deacon had to step forward. The lake was icy cold and deep here, and ice collected around the edges. The crystal in the pale moonlight would have been beautiful but all Deacon saw was danger.

“Looking,” Rafe murmured, and stepped even closer. The lake was around Rafe’s feet now, and Deacon realized that Rafe had stopped on a piece of ground that jutted into the ice.

He wanted to tell him to move away, but that wasn’t his job.

Neither of his jobs.

“What are you looking at?” he asked, and casually stepped closer; just out of grabbing distance, but close enough to try to stop him if he jumped into the lake.

“The ice is pretty here,” Rafe murmured.

He sounded contemplative, quiet, serious, and Deacon didn’t like that one little bit. He’d once talked a jumper off a ten-story building, and Rafe’s voice had that faraway quality that spoke of a decision made and an action that needed to be carried out.

“Come back,” he said; more ordered. He had to stay in character for now, but what if Rafe decided that he was jumping? What did Deacon do then? No one said he had to care about Rafe, but he did.

This was week three, and he’d seen Rafe bullied, and ignored, and seen him close his eyes to it all. He hadn’t seen a family who had welcomed a bereaved nephew and cousin into the fold. All he’d observed was that Rafe shouldn’t be there.

What?” Rafe asked dreamily. Deacon had to think to remember what he’d asked.

“Come away from the edge,” he reworded the instruction. “You don’t want to slip in.”

Rafe let out a sharp bark of a laugh. “What if I do?”

What?

“Rafe—”

“You could get me some skates, and I could glide on the water. I’ve never done that before; we didn’t have a lot of iced-over lakes in Miami. I’m surprised there is one here in California.”

“It won’t last,” Deacon said, and stepped a little closer. “Only on the coldest nights and just at the edge, but the water would be cold if you swam in it.”

He saw Rafe’s full-body shudder. “I don’t want to swim in it. It’s a horrible, scary lake, so deep you can’t see the bottom, and who knows what I’d find down there if I did.”

The lake was on Rafe’s uncle’s land, a natural crack in the terrain with an icy spring that fed it. Deacon had a feeling there were a lot of things in its depths that were never meant to be found again.

“I’ve skated on a frozen pond,” Deacon said, a little desperately – anything to get Rafe’s attention. “Back in Massachusetts, the pond in our town wasn’t deep, but it spread a good way, and it would ice over when it got cold.”

After a moment’s pause Rafe spoke. “When was that?”

Yes, he was talking back.

“When I was a kid. I used to go skating with my best friend, Mac.”

“No, I mean, how long did it… was it… I don’t know what I mean.”

Shit, this doesn’t sound good.

Deacon carried on. “There was always September first, and it was all rust and gold as far as the eye could see, and then you’d have the snow and ice and the cold of winter.”

Rafe shivered and wrapped his arms around himself, and Deacon took a cautious step forward. Keep talking.

“One day, maybe I’ll go visit there again in the Fall, and wait for the snow and cold so I can skate again. See my family, visit with friends.”

Rafe nodded, as if he was actually listening. “Friends are good,” he muttered, and then the tension slipped away from him and his arms fell to his sides.

What happened next was Deacon’s worries come to life. Rafe turned to face him, slipped on the ice that had crept onto the grass on the bank, and began to slide toward the water.

Deacon grabbed for Rafe, any part of him, getting a solid hold of his arm and hand and yanking him back, stumbling away from the water and tumbling to the ground, Rafe a solid weight on top of him.

He didn’t want this. He didn’t want sexy, intriguing Rafe sprawled over him, laughing like an idiot. He didn’t want Rafe at the lake, or even in the same fucking state as his asshole uncle and cousins. Trying to extricate himself from the pile of limbs he was tangled in was useless. Rafe was a dead weight, and seemed to be content being wrapped around Deacon.

“Kid, you need to move,” he muttered, willing away the arousal that was zipping through his body.

Rafe snorted another laugh. “You know I’m twenty-three, right? Legal in every state, or at least I think so.”

“Get off me.” Deacon tried to buck him off, but Rafe was hard against him, and heavy, and clinging like a freaking limpet.

“I know you’ve been looking at me,” Rafe murmured, dipping his head so they were close enough that Deacon could simply lean up a little and they would be kissing.

Remember the goal.

“Kid, Jesus,” he said, in an exasperated tone, which was heavily at odds with the arousal he was feeling at having gorgeous, sexy Rafe slumped over him.

But the tone didn’t work, and Rafe wasn’t moving.

In fact, he ramped the whole thing up so it was worse than before. He peppered Deacon’s face with kisses; small touches with each word, explaining why he wasn’t a kid and Deacon should kiss him back.

For a while – seconds, hours, he didn’t know – he tried to get away from this maniac with the kissing and the laughter, and then abruptly things changed.

In a smooth move, he twisted so it was Rafe on the ground under him, abruptly quiet and looking up at Deacon, his eyes wide.

“Deacon?” he asked, his tone wary.

And Deacon kissed him.

He held Rafe’s hands to the icy ground and kissed him, pressed him hard into the mud and explored Rafe’s sexy, pouty mouth with a thoroughness that had him near to coming in his pants as they rocked against each other.

This kiss was deliberate and needy and the want of it had been building ever since he’d arrived at the Martinez place.

“Deacon!” a voice called in the darkness, and Deacon was off Rafe and up on his feet within seconds, holding out a hand to help Rafe stand. He brushed himself off, and Rafe moved back and away into the shelter of the nearest tree.

“You got your eyes on him?” Chumo asked, his tone accusing.

“Following him around the lake,” Deacon reported, then turned away from Rafe’s cousin, the least psychotic of them. “Need to go.”

Chumo spun on his heel as though that was enough for him. His dad or brother had likely told him to go look for Rafe, and his job was done. When Chumo left, Rafe stepped back out with a soft laugh.

“That was close,” he said, coming to a stop right next to Deacon, his hand brushing Deacon’s arm.

Deacon rounded on Rafe. “Don’t fucking touch me,” he spat. Rafe blinked at him, startled, hurt in his expression.

“I saw your eyes,” Rafe murmured.

“Let’s get back.” Deacon turned to walk away, but Rafe didn’t follow.

“And I felt that kiss,” he added.

“I’m not repeating myself,” Deacon snapped.

This time he sensed Rafe following, and they made their way back to the main house. Rafe said nothing and went to his room quietly. Only when Rafe was in his room did Deacon ever feel truly able to deal with his real mission; finding evidence to tie this family to terrible crimes that destroyed lives.

This family, and possibly Rafe.

Rafe closed his bedroom door behind him. He wouldn’t need to come out of his room now until morning, and if he was lucky he could avoid his family and get to school without incident. Of course, Deacon would be right on his tail all the way to college, but he could handle that.

Or at least, he had been able to until just now.

Now? Well, hell, it would be a hundred kinds of awkward, facing Deacon after that kiss and then Deacon shutting down on him so abruptly.

For a second, Rafe had seen naked need in Deacon’s eyes, and then one word from Chumo and Deacon had pulled down the mask that was his hard-man persona. Rafe was convinced there was more to Deacon; he just didn’t know how to reach the man.

But the need for it burned in him, and he had no clue why. Lusting after one of the bad guys was going to compromise everything he was there to do, but that wasn’t enough to stop him. He was losing his freaking mind.

Lying back on his bed, he stared at the ceiling, and the unsettling feeling of being watched was back again. He hated this place, hated his family, just wanted to be back in Miami with his dad and his stories of how his mom had died. The only place he could find them again was in his memories, and he closed his eyes, thinking of one single day when everything had been okay. Of course, he’d never known his mom – she’d died a few weeks after he was born – but his dad had kept her memory alive with photos and stories. She’d danced, or so his dad had said, danced with crazy happiness in their kitchen, danced slow and crying when she was emotional; to hear his dad tell it, she’d been a whirlwind of motion. Every photo he had of her, she was smiling back at Rafe, but he didn’t have the photos here. They were boxed up in storage along with the rest of his life.

Was I really going to walk into that water?

The thought of it, of stepping into the ice, had been right there in his mind. He imagined the grief of losing his father slowly floating away as he sank to the bottom, and he rolled onto his front, his face buried in his pillows. The tears he cried were hot and fierce, but he didn’t sob, or shake; his grief was his alone.

I don’t want to die.

He hated his uncle, hated him with everything he had. He’d hated him as a child, and now, as an adult, when the grief wasn’t overwhelming everything else, he hated Arlo with every fiber of his being. His dad had been convinced that Uncle Arlo was evil.

“Arlo hated me for marrying his sister,” his dad had always said when whiskey had loosened his tongue. “But I didn’t care. My Santanna was everything to me, and when she gave me you, I couldn’t have loved anyone more. We didn’t need her family.” And then he would correct himself. “We don’t need her family.”

“Why did I even leave Miami?” Rafe muttered, and kicked the corner of the bed, wincing when the bed didn’t give way but his foot did.

He should have stayed in Miami, in the house he’d shared with his dad, surrounded by photos of his mom; hell, he should have listened to his dad and left well enough alone.

“Stay away from your mother’s brother,” he’d said over and over before he died. “That’s the bad side of the family. Your Uncle Arlo and his sons, your cousins, they are bad men.”

Growing up, he’d begun to associate the word “bad” with his uncle and his two cousins, Felix and Chumo. They were all the way over the other side of the country in California, and that was pretty much all that Rafe had known.

Until his dad had been dying and he’d told Rafe everything. Said he’d written everything down, located people who’d seen things, had evidence that Rafe’s uncle had killed Rafe’s mom. Beaten her to death. He’d gone to confront Arlo. He was sorry. He’d fucked up.

What Rafe heard had made his blood run cold. It had also had him organizing his last semester in California, citing that he needed to be with family now his father was dead. The lie sat uneasily with him, but his old college had been okay with it all, the bereavement counselor positively beaming as she ticked all the right boxes about this newly orphaned young man finding family to take care of him.

Grief at losing his dad, and a new acid of hate that was forcing its way into his heart, was what had sent him here.

His dad had been his everything. The mild-mannered man had taken him to peewee baseball, the dentist, school, helped him with homework, and not once had he spoken about his life in Cuba, or his family.

Not until that last week.

Not until the car had hit him, and he’d laid dying in a hospital, and he’d told Rafe what he’d lived with for so many years.

So many secrets that had changed Rafe’s life forever.

He rolled onto his back and stared up at the ceiling again, considering how long he could keep up the pretense. He should have handed everything over to the cops, but then his dad would have been pulled into the mess posthumously, and his good name was the one thing that was left now of Héctor Ramirez; that and Rafe’s memories of his dad. He had details in his head of his mom’s supposed car accident, a statement from the first cop on the scene; she’d been run off the road just outside the town he was in now. Her car had been shoved off the road, but that had never made the official statements. The cause of the accident had been covered up; she’d been visiting her brother in California and she’d died tragically after she’d lost control of the car. Nothing about the dents that had to have been made by another vehicle. Everything had been covered up, or so his dad had thought. And the accident itself a cover-up for her being beaten to death by her brother.

His dad had sworn that was true.

Rafe didn’t know what to think.

Then there was the hit-and-run responsible for his dad’s death, less than a week after the only visit he’d ever made to visit his brother-in-law in California.

“I went to make him tell me what he’d done,” his dad had told him. “He told me he’d beaten his sister, as if it was okay, as if he was entitled. But I saw evil in his eyes. Always look into a man’s eyes, Rafael. It’s up to you to find out what he did.”

The burden of this weighed on Rafe. He wanted to know how his mom had died, who had killed his dad. But now, here in this house, he was losing his mind in the biggest way.

His Uncle Arlo had, of course, welcomed his beloved nephew with open arms, which Rafe had counted on – Arlo was big on family, and hadn’t batted an eyelid at his nephew living with him when Arlo was the only family Rafe had left. Particularly when Rafe had said nothing about his parents other than the normal exchange of superficial grief statements.

“I miss them,” Arlo had said with great feeling.

“Me too,” Rafe had said, keeping everything inside him.

One thing Arlo hadn’t welcomed him into was the business. Nope, everything had been pushed away, and he’d been kept separate, even so far as being assigned a bodyguard, for his own protection. Deacon had been hired to keep an eye on him. Or at least that was what Rafe thought. It was no accident that Deacon had turned up a couple of days after he had, nor that he was always everywhere Rafe went.

Rafe just needed to play the long game and get enough evidence together to back up his dad’s observations, see if they were more than just the ramblings of an old man, and then he could hand the whole lot over to the police.

Then he could make his uncle pay.

Lieutenant Brent Jameson is a Navy brat turned Annapolis grad. He’s lived and breathed the military his whole life, and he knows he’s destined for great things — once he’s done paying his dues at the bottom of the ladder.

When their paths cross, both men know better than to give in to temptation, but that doesn’t stop them. It also doesn’t keep them from coming back for more, even though being discovered would sink their careers. Something has to give — Will can retire, Brent can resign, or they’ll both face court-martial.

The starting goalie for the Cayuga Cougars, he has a year or two in Cayuga to hone his skills and all his career dreams will have come true. Pity his personal life isn’t riding the same high. He’s the only one among his group of friends without that special someone to call his own.

Until he meets Salvatore Castenada at a lakeside party. The attraction is white-hot and more than a little wonderfully overwhelming for the romantically inexperienced goalie. August quickly discovers that Sal is everything he’s dreamed of in a man: mature, settled, sinfully handsome, and filled with gentle humor. Sal is also HIV positive.
Will Sal’s revelation about his status end this budding relationship before it can even begin? Or will the two men be able to handle the challenges life—and a championship run for the Cougars—throws at them?

Blurb:

Josh Cooper, top US security field agent, is sent on an inter-agency assignment to London, when a partner in his firm goes missing in suspicious circumstances. Used to working in sole charge of his well-honed team, he clashes heads with the handsome, but pompous Cal, his UK co-operator and superior. Josh’s gut tells him something is wrong. He’s being kept out of the loop and Cal’s agenda is running on a different path.

He also has a personal issue to deal with. He’s involved in a cyber-relationship with “Charlie”, an unknown man who connected with Josh by accident. Their banter has led to deeper respect and a sexual interest, but now Josh is faced with a growing attraction to Cal. Between this conflict and the tension of the mission, Josh’s heart and head are overworked and confused. Things can’t get much worse.

Then Josh discovers the enemies he’s seeking have a new target: him.

Excerpt:

The message popped up as soon as Josh Cooper logged on.

“Morning Angel.”

Josh blew the message a kiss and typed a greeting in return.

“Morning Charlie. Need coffee.”

Any further communication would have to wait until Josh found caffeine. After two years Charlie knew Josh wasn’t in the mood to talk until his blood stream was eighty per cent caffeine.

Of course, Josh wasn’t really Angel and Charlie was… whoever he was… but if they wanted to greet each other like relics from a seventies TV show then it was no one’s business but their own. Their relationship—if IM could be called a relationship—had started two weeks after Josh began at CDR, when CDR053 had messaged Josh by mistake. When he wouldn’t give his name, Josh had dubbed the mysterious stranger Charlie. The minute Charlie had called Josh his angel; Josh knew Charlie was sent by his goddess, Farrah Fawcett, to brighten his existence. But he didn’t hear from Charlie every day. Sometimes weeks would go by without a word but, when he’d log on and receive a “Morning Angel”, Josh would send up a thanks to Farrah for making his day golden.

Josh blew one more kiss at the computer even though Charlie couldn’t see it, and wandered off to find live-saving coffee. It was just after nine in the morning and he was about to drink cup number four, which would elevate him from zombie to almost human. He was unashamedly addicted and if he encountered one of those ‘green tea plucked from the Himalayas only on a full moon in a month beginning with Z’ types he wouldn’t apologize for what came out of his mouth. He liked his coffee black and strong, just like his… dog. Josh didn’t have a dog either.

Whenever he said that people would smirk at him and he’d smirk back. He didn’t care what they thought he was going to say. Josh didn’t give a fuck if his men were black, white, built or tiny. When a guy tried it on, Josh stabbed a finger in his chest. “If you think picking me up and banging me against a wall is a sign of a real man you can think again. ‘Sides, I can probably put you on the floor before you lay on finger on me.” And then he would demonstrate. Josh was a show-not-tell man, and the guys who picked themselves up and ran away weren’t worth his time of day. Enough of them dusted off their butt and stayed to make the demonstration worthwhile.

Josh filled his mug with fresh brewed coffee, took a huge swallow, topped off the mug again and returned to his desk at a leisurely pace, waving to the receptionist as he rounded the corner. She blew him a crimson lip-sticked kiss and he caught it, slapped it to his ass and grinned as she giggled. He sat at his desk, pleased to see the cursor still flashing, and typed a quick “Back again.”

“Been caught by Dominic yet?”

“Not yet.” Josh had slid past the operations manager’s office in the hope of being undetected. He couldn’t cope with Dominic Cook prior to being caffeinated. Charlie found Josh’s fractious relationship with Dominic endlessly amusing. Josh had another word—many words— for their working relationship. Amusing wasn’t one of them.

“Did you hide from him?”

Josh pulled a face at the screen. Charlie knew him far too well. “It’s too early to deal with him.”

“Coward.”

“Sensible.”

It was all right for Charlie to fling random accusations around when he didn’t work for Dominic. Josh wasn’t entirely sure what Charlie did for CDR and Charlie was annoyingly closed-mouthed.

CDR, named after its founder, Callum David Ross, provided security for anyone who needed it; whether they were celebrities, big companies, or wealthy individuals who could afford CDR’s resources.

Two years ago, Josh had been head-hunted from his former company after he saved one of CDR’s high profile clients from an assassination attempt. Josh always maintained he was just in the wrong place at the right time but, after a cutting interview with Dominic which felt like he’d had the close hairs shaved off his balls; Josh was employed as part of a field team dealing with low profile but high risk clients. The rest of his team were currently two floors up in the gym beating the living shit out of each other. They were the muscle; Josh was the brains. At least in theory. Josh didn’t want to test it out. He had a feeling both men were more than capable of beating him in both brains and brawn.

Charlie left a new message. “You’ve got a new assignment.”

Josh frowned at the screen. “How do you know that?”

“You know I’m not going to tell you my sources.”

“Fuck. I’ve just got back from the last one. Mr. Truffles is gonna be pissed.”

Josh had recently been adopted by a chocolate brown cat who’d moved in one day and showed no signs of leaving. So far his neighbor had seen more of Mr. Truffles than he had.

“You know Eileen will love to have him again.”

“That’s what I’m worried about, Charlie. I swear one day she won’t give him back.”

“Angel.”

“Yes?”

“Be careful.”

Josh didn’t think Charlie was talking about the potential loss of a cat. He huffed and stabbed at his keyboard. “I’m always careful. You know that.” He’d built his reputation on protecting his clients and his team.

“I know, Angel. But this isn’t like your usual assignments.”

Josh could almost hear Charlie trying to sooth him but he was still feeling huffy. “I’ll do my job. You know. What I’m paid for.”

“I know you will. Just watch your back. Sorry, Angel. I’ve got to go.”

Josh stared at the screen for a long moment. He’d always suspected Charlie was high up in CDR’s ranks, but for Charlie to know about the assignments before he did only confirmed Josh’s suspicions.

“Cooper!”

Josh looked up to see his flame-haired operations manager waving from conference room one. “You yelled, oh great one?”

“Cut the crap,” Dominic growled. “It’s too early.”

“Yes, sir!” Josh saluted him smartly.

Dominic growled again. “Get the boys down here now!”

Josh sent a text to both members of his team and then sat back in his chair to finish his coffee. There was no point in rushing. They would take six minutes and forty-five seconds to shower and arrive from two floors up. In the meantime, he wondered whatever the hell was so serious that it had stuck a bug up Dominic’s butt and worried Charlie. He pulled out his notebook and logged this crisis under number 5440. Josh definitely had OCD tendencies, although not many people noticed until they discovered he never forgot anything, invariably to their cost.

After six minutes Josh headed into the conference room, a full mug of coffee in his hand. Dominic was staring pensively out of the rain-lashed window. He didn’t turn around as Josh entered so Josh took his usual seat and waited for Dominic to acknowledge him. Forty-five seconds later when the rest of the team arrived, Dominic was still staring out of the window.

Landry and Gil Grover, the so-called muscle of his team, took the seats flanking Josh. Twins, six-foot-four, dark skin and dark eyes, they were basically sex on legs. Josh had entertained more than one fantasy about being the filling in that particularly muscled sandwich. Unfortunately, they were both straight, laughed hysterically at the idea of being in the same bed and rejected the offer of Josh’s dick on numerous occasions. He kept trying though, for form’s sake. At least now they rejected him without threatening to rearrange his face. Josh didn’t take it personally. He was born to flirt. Sometimes he got lucky.

David, Renewed - Diana Copland

A long time ago Diana and I were in an anthology together - my very first story, taken by DSP in their Brush Of Wings antho. Of course the short became *Angel In A Bookshop* when the rights were returned to me.

Diana has a new book out and I asked her to send me the information to share with you all because the blurb intrigues me! I love house renovation stories *sighs*.

David, Renewed

When interior designer David Snyder buys a beautiful century-old house in eastern Washington, he is reeling with heartbreak and looking for somewhere to put down roots. Unfortunately his new home comes with a laundry list of problems: electrical, plumbing, heating… things David knows nothing about. When his mother offers him the business card of a local handyman, David pictures an overweight, balding man in his fifties. But Jackson Henry couldn’t be further from that stereotype.

Dark-haired, muscular, and handsome, Jackson left a large construction firm in Seattle to take care of his sick mother. However, his hometown still has an active “good old boy” network, and finding employment in construction is almost impossible for an openly gay man. Determined to persevere, Jackson takes odd jobs as a handyman. He’s exactly what David needs—in more ways than one.

David isn’t ready for his attraction to Jackson, not considering the way his last relationship ended. But as the two men get to know each other, it becomes clear that the heart often knows best, and it rewards those willing to listen.

EXCERPT

The gate to the courtyard creaked quietly. Suddenly the vision had gone, and Scot was alone there, his eyes acclimatizing to the dark and the barely-there whisper of sand around his feet. For a moment he swayed, trying to re-establish himself in the here and now.

If that was where he actually was.

He glanced back over his shoulder and, to his surprise, saw Jerry at the entrance, wavering at the open gate as if nervous of going any farther. Scot had some sympathy with that. Was Jerry here to meet Vincent after all? Scot waited for the ache of betrayal and hurt, but again to his surprise, he wasn’t as devastated as he thought he’d be.

“Jerry?” he called softly.

Jerry padded into the courtyard, also barefoot, paused and ran a hand through his hair. He didn’t answer, didn’t even meet Scot’s gaze. It was as if he didn’t see him at all. “Where are you?” he whispered into the half-dark.

Some crappy choice for a secret assignation, Scot thought harshly. No fucking place to hide here. Even if Vincent was a skinny little man who could crouch behind the pool and avoid Scot’s investigation—

“Jerry,” said another voice. Deep and seductive and totally welcoming.

Scot whirled back around to face the pool. Vincent was there in front of him! He was as clear as he’d been in Scot’s weird half-dream, and dressed the same. He looked real. Solid. Sexy. And he was smiling over Scot’s shoulder, directly at Jerry.

“Vincent,” Jerry said, and smiled back.

Jesus. Scot had never heard such a simper in Jerry’s tone! Instinctively, he took a few steps back toward the perimeter wall so that he could look more easily between Jerry and Vincent and…

“Hi Oliver,” Jerry said.

Oliver was there as well? How the fuck? Scot knew Oliver hadn’t been standing beside Vincent just two minutes ago, when Scot had been clinging to the pool wall and dreaming his weird, felt-so-real dream. But that’s where Oliver was now.

Scot stood, frozen, as Jerry walked past him.

“This is the first time,” Jerry said softly.

Vincent tilted his head to one side, a mischievous look on his face.

“The first time I’ve met Connor Maxwell,” Jerry added in explanation.

“So what do you think of me?” said another, new, but oh-so-fucking-not, voice.

Jerry’s laugh was astonishingly relaxed, like another, happier man’s, at least as far as Scot was concerned. “You’re hot,” he said, with humor in his tone. “Though I should have expected that.”

Scot watched with amazement as Connor stepped out from behind Vincent and took Jerry’s hand. They were all dressed the same as in the dream. As if they were just continuing it now, in front of Scot again. Scot recognized that smile on Connor’s face—he’d turned it on Scot in the kitchen the other day.

“But I think you do know me,” Connor said to Jerry.

“I… do?”

“You know me,” Vincent murmured in Jerry’s ear, his hand sliding around Jerry’s waist. “So you know Connor too. You see how easy it is?”

Jerry blinked hard: Scot knew it was his what the fuck? face, but Jerry didn’t challenge Vincent or Connor. Instead he smiled again, sleepily, but with what looked a lot like hopeful anticipation. “Yes. Yes, I think I do.”

Jerry! Scot wanted to grab the man, shake him, shout into his face, demand to know what was going on. But… what was the point?

“What happens now?” Jerry asked. He arched gently as Vincent kissed his neck, still holding him close. Jerry’s gaze flickered between the three men, his pupils dilating. Never once did he look over to where Scot stood.

“Welcome to Maxwell’s Motel, Jerry Harrison,” said Vincent.

“A proper welcome this time,” Oliver said mischievously. “From all of us.”

Connor continued as if neither of the others had spoken. “I hoped you would come tonight. Come and join us.”

“Enjoy us,” Vincent added.

They took hold of Jerry, one on each arm, Vincent’s lips at his throat, and drew him nearer the pool.

And Jerry spun in their arms, laughing, and then they all vanished into nothing.

Loved this unique take on fated mates. Hot, and sexy, and ever so slightly addictive... lol...

Excerpt

"This seat taken?”

The smooth, husky voice startled Jared into jarring his shoulder again. He snapped his eyes open.

The guy in front of him was tall, maybe three inches taller than Jared’s six foot one, and he stood way too close, invading Jared’s personal space. It set him instantly on edge. Leaning back in his seat to get some distance between them, Jared gave him a wary look. “No, but I’m not eager to fill it either.”

“Feisty. I like that in my men.” The tall guy put his hand on the back of Jared’s chair, and ever so subtly scented the air.

A few more drinks in and Jared would have missed it, but the alcohol had yet to hit his system, and he recognised the move for what it was.

Fucking shifters.

“Piss off.”

“I’m Nathan.” The guy grinned at him, oozing confidence.

Jared rolled his eyes and took a deliberately slow drink of his beer. “And I’m not interested. So kindly fuck off and go bother someone else.”

New Release: Smoke and Mirrors by Charlie Cochet

Hello, all! Welcome to the next stop on the Smoke & Mirrors blog tour, celebrating the release of the 7th book in the THIRDS series. In Against the Grain we were introduced to the Therian Intelligence Network or TIN, the Therian equivalent of the CIA. Throughout books 5 and 6, TIN is still a bit of a mystery. We’ve been introduced to some key players, but they’re still very much in the shadows. We don’t know who they are, what they do, or if they pose a threat to our Destructive Delta crew.

In Smoke & Mirrors TIN plays a much bigger role, and we get to see more of them and their operatives. By now we’ve learned that TIN operatives are often referred to as TIN Men, nicknamed after the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz because he had no heart, and TIN Men are rumored to be heartless. They’re known for doing whatever is necessary to get the job done. Although this may be true at times, there’s also a great deal of myth surrounding them. These guys are the best of the best. No one sees them coning until it’s too late, and sometimes they’re not seen at all.

Their signature wardrobe is a black suit, white shirt, and a specific color tie. No two TIN operatives wear the same color tie. When hired, each operative selects a hue, and the hex number is how they’re identified in all communications. No names are used in any documentation. Aliases and legends are often assumed during missions or covert operations. Only the most skilled Therians are recruited, and once training is complete, a TIN operative is highly trained, skilled, and deadly.

TIN might consist of purely Therian operatives, but they do possess Human assets. When a TIN operative is brought on board, they are required to have a ready team of assets in place, and as they take on assignments, build their list of reliable associates. But just who are TIN, and what do they do? Much like the Human CIA, TIN deals with national security, some domestic, but mostly foreign intelligence, usually concerning Therians. With the dawn of Therians, came those looking to exploit and abuse their power. TIN and the Human CIA work toward a world where no one side achieves complete control over the other. A never ending war most often unseen by civilians.

Welcome to the Therian Intelligence Network.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Life for Dexter J. Daley has never been easy, but he’s always found a way to pick himself back up with a smile on his face. Dex learns what he’s secretly believed all along: his parents’ death wasn’t an accident.

Discovering the whole truth about John and Gina Daley’s homicide sets off a series of events that will change Dex and Sloane’s lives forever. As buried secrets rise to the surface and new truths are revealed, Dex and Sloane’s love for each other is put to the test, with more than their relationship on the line. If traversing the waters of murder and secret government agencies wasn’t enough, something inexplicable has been happening to Dex—and nothing will ever be the same.

Review:

Loved Jude and Danny even if I wanted to bang their heads together!!! Looking forward to the next book. :)

Excerpt:

“Do you fancy going to the cinema tonight?” Jude asked as he finished unpacking the shopping.

Danny was pouring boiling water into two mugs, the teabags bobbing up and down. He put the kettle down and turned to Jude, surprised at his question.

“Aren't you seeing thingy tonight?”

Hope surged through Danny. Jude had spent all his free-time with Mike ever since the pair of them had become an item. If they weren't seeing each other tonight then perhaps things had cooled down. . .

“Mike, not thingy. No, not tonight. He's seeing an old school friend who's down from the north.” Jude pulled a carton from the fridge and poured milk into the two mugs.

Danny gave him a sideward glance.

Yeah, likely story. Danny didn't believe that for a minute. But Jude obviously did because he didn't look as if his world had collapsed around his feet, which was how he always was when his latest romance had crashed and burned.

Do I want to go to the cinema with you, Jude? The two of us sitting close together in the dark where nobody would see me put my arm around your shoulders and pull you in and kiss—

“Danny?”

“Er, what?” Danny blinked hard, as if he'd been dragged into a bright light.

“The cinema. Are you alright?” Jude squinted at Danny.

“Mm, okay. That'll be good.” Danny took a gulp of tea, screwing his eyes up as the scalding liquid burned its way down his throat.

A film would be good, though. Maybe add dinner into the mix. It felt like an age since they'd done anything like that.

Jude answered with his big, bright, sunny smile that never failed to melt Danny's heart and make the world seem a better place.

Minutes later they were pulling on their jackets and heading out of the flat, towards the cinema on the high street. The romantic comedy that Jude wanted to see, and Danny huffed at, was sold out, so they opted for the zombie-apocalypse. Armed with buckets of popcorn they found their seats in the gloomy auditorium and settled back. Other cinema goers drifted in as the advertisements played, but it didn't fill up and Danny and Jude had plenty of room to spread themselves out.

By the time the zombies had eaten their way through half a small town in the American Mid-West, Jude was peeking through splayed fingers and cringing into his seat.

“Oh God, this is horrible. Why did we decide to see this?” He winced as a wet chunk of flesh was pulled from another screaming blonde.

“It's so bad it's great. C'mere.” Danny wrapped his arm around Jude's shoulder. Jude leaned into him and buried his head into the crook of Danny neck.

Danny could feel Jude's warm breath. He sighed, happy that it was just the two of them. It felt as if it had been ages since they'd had a date night. Not that he called it that out loud because it wasn't a date, it was just two really good friends spending an evening with each other. They would have to be going out with each other for it to be a date. Danny was violently bumped out of his thoughts when Jude climbed into his lap.

“I can't watch it, it's making me feel sick!” Jude whispered as he clung to Danny.

Danny glanced around. A few people were looking at them, more interested in what was happening in seats J8 and J9 than in zombies but Danny stared back at them in a silent challenge and they turned their attention back to the film. Danny tightened his arms around Jude and hugged him close.

“You are one fucking wuss,” Danny whispered into Jude's hair. He felt the shake of Jude's laughter.

“I wanted to see the rom-com but instead I'm watching guts being wrenched from living bodies and waved around like lassos. Why did we decide on this?” Jude said again, looking up at Danny.

“Because it was all we could get tickets for. Don’t worry, I'll protect you from the flesh-eating zombies.” Danny looked at Jude and grinned. He'd meant to turn his head back towards the screen and follow the brave, but ultimately doomed, bid for escape from zombie-town. What he didn't mean to do was to stare into Jude's eyes that glittered in the dark auditorium. He didn't mean to dip his head and bring his lips to Jude's and taste the warm, buttery sweetness of popcorn on Jude's mouth. Danny never meant to do any of those things. But he did. Danny didn't know if Jude invited him, or if he pushed his way into the damp heat of Jude's mouth. It didn't matter. What mattered was that he was kissing Jude, and Jude was kissing him back. This wasn't an affectionate kiss of two old friends, this was all teeth and tongues, wet, sloppy and noisy.

Danny's head swam as Jude pulled him tighter into the kiss. His heart hammered hard against his ribcage, so hard it felt as if his bones would break. Danny squeezed his eyes tight but instead of blackness he saw starbursts of brilliant white. He was dizzy and disorientated. He needed oxygen, he needed to breathe. But he didn't care, because he needed the kiss more.

“Oi, you two. What the fuck do you think you're doing?” The angry words were accompanied by a swat around the back of Danny's head.

A bulky middle-aged couple glared at them over half-eaten hot-dogs from the row behind. Danny didn't think now was the time to tell the slobs that they had tomato sauce dripping down their chins. He glanced around, seeing others nearby enjoying the little side show that was taking place, the film on the screen forgotten for a minute or two. Danny decided it was time to leave.

“Come on, let's go.” Danny pulled Jude up and they stumbled past the few other customers in their row, ignoring the tutting and exaggerated sighs, as they made their way to the exit.
