Feature Friday - Garrett Leigh/Black Jazz Design - Cover Design

Welcome to the talented Garrett Leigh, award winning author and cover designer...

There are two questions that I get asked the most when people want to talk to me about cover art.

#1 What’s your favourite cover you’ve ever done?

#2 What kind of cover will make me a bestseller?

The first question is easy enough: I’ve no chuffing idea. Sure, there’s books out there I’m super proud to have my name in for any number of reasons—the book sold a ton, the art was on point, or I’ve splashed a family member all over it and have blackmail rights until the end of time (true story). But there’s others that perhaps didn’t set the world alight in sales terms, but are super personal to me. It might be that I’ve used a photograph taken by my SO, or my dad, or that I simply loved the book. And my absolute favourite covers change all the time as new assignments come in.

The second question is far more complicated, and brings us back to the discussion Kellie Dennis and I have moderated at many con panels over the last few years.

It basically boils down to this: Do I have to have a model on my book, nekkid or otherwise?

And that answer isn’t simple either. The obvious one is NO, of course you don’t. It’s your book…have what you like (if you’re indie…publishers have their own rules). But will it sell, they cry? And generally, the consensus seems to be that it won’t…at least, not as well as it might’ve done with a model on the front. (There are exceptions to this general rule, particularly with established authors who have large and loyal readerships).

The model thing seems to be a particular trend in MM romance. MF have the whole Fifty Shades concept cover vibe going on, and thrillers, fantasy etc follow similar patterns. But as romance makes up the main bulk of my business, that’s what I’m talking about right now. Art vs sweaty-gritty-man-titty. It’s a thing.

Go back to the bestseller question, and the answer becomes even more convoluted. Because the market doesn’t run on cover art alone. Reputation, hype, and early reviews all impact ranking, and no cover in the world can disguise a shitty book.

BUT, one of the best tools for gauging what’s going on in the world of cover art is to check out the bestseller lists in the genre/subgenre you’re writing in. You might find that the top ten books don’t fit your book at all, but pick them apart, figure out what they all have in common. Do they have models? Plain fonts? Certain colours that crop up more than most? Make notes.

A cover alone won’t give you a bestselling book, but it’s often the first thing readers see. Do you want to stand out from the crowd? Or blend in and get caught up in a rush for a certain type of book?

There are no right answers.

Oh, and for the record, my favourite covers of 2017 (so far) are these…

Hump Day Interview - Garrett Leigh

Today's author jumping in the Hump Day Hot Seat is Garrett Leigh

What are you known for?

As a writer, I'm known for angst and tragedy, and grit and tears. Can't imagine why, as I'm a delight in real life (heh). Seriously, though. I think I am known for putting characters through the ringer before I give them a HEA.

What would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

My spirit animal is the Fox. My social media accounts are awash with them, as is my skin :)

What is the first book that made you cry?

Books don't make me cry, which is probably why I can write so much angst. I need a full on assault from all sides--visual, music, etc... to break into my stone heart. I'm not really much of a crier in general, unless it's rage tears, of course, but that's a whole other story...

What are you reading right now and what is next on your to-be-read list?

I'm rereading Concourse by Santino Hassell right now to get me ready for Citywide this autumn. I love that series. Sutphin Boulevard pulled me out of a serious MM funk, and as the series has progressed, I've really enjoyed the diversity of each pairing and the ensemble cast. It's educational for those that need it, without being preachy, and I'm 100% TEAM NUNZIO. I'm still waiting on SH to write SB from his POV. Next on my TBR is a Suki Fleet book. Foxes, I believe. I love her writing.

Do you read your reviews, and if so do they influence the way you write the next book at all?

Reviews: I don't read them unless I'm tagged in a positive on on social media. I don't go looking for them, and the vicious ones pass me by. Reviews are for readers, and they should feel free to go to town in them without fear that an author is going to do their nut at a bad one.

For your chance to win an ebook of either Slide or Rare answer this question...What is the first book that made you cry?

I love him...but he’s forgotten why.

A lot can happen in six years, and Ash and Pete have seen their world flipped upside down more times than most. Being parents to Pete's young nephew wasn't in their plan, but life happens to them and they roll with the punches. Or at least they did, until new heartache rocks their hard-won happily-ever-after.

Ash loves Pete as much as ever—more, in fact—but Pete battles alone with a burden that weighs heavily on his heart. Ash is no stranger to dark clouds, but the secret Pete keeps from him is a storm that could break them.

Despite the fierce love that once buoyed them, they're both drowning until a new friend throws them a lifeline. His wisdom offers insight—for better or worse, real love is rarely a smooth journey. For Ash and Pete to come full circle once more, they’ll have to hit the road and chase it.

Twelve Days of Christmas: Day 8 Garrett Leigh

On Day 8 I have Garrett Leigh visiting, take it away Garrett...

Hey! And thank you, RJ, for having me on your wonderful blog.

I wish I had a Christmas book to pimp, but, alas, I don’t, because it’s usually around this time of year that I get a plot bunny for one, and by then, it’s too late. And don’t even think about telling me to write it now for next year, because this is also the time of year when I don’t have time for unscheduled bunny madness!!

Perhaps 2017 will be the year I decide I really can bring myself to write a Christmas book in July, but I doubt it. So, for now, I’ll have to be content in designing cover art for all the authors who are far more organised than me!

Merry Christmas,

Garrett

PS: I’m also giving away an ebook from my Heated Beat series—My Mate Jack, or Lucky Man. YOU decide.

The Book

My Mate Jack

Will Barter’s been in love with his best mate Jack for as long as he can remember. They’ve shared everything: love, life, laughs, even Will’s first kiss. But Jack’s straight, and Will’s long-buried infatuation means nothing until their last summer together draws to a close.

Then one night, everything changes, but with Will bound for university in Leeds, and Jack for his dream DJ job in Ibiza, there’s no time to explore their blurred lines. Before long all that’s left are secrets, lies, and misunderstandings.

In the months that follow, anger and hurt overshadow fifteen years of friendship, and Will must dig deep to remember Jack is his mate… his best mate, and nothing matters more than that, right?

Lucky Man

As a diehard music fan, a dirty, smoky gig is Vice Squad Detective Danny Jones’s idea of heaven. While watching one of the most popular bands in Northern England, the sight of gorgeous rock star Finn McGovern changes his life forever.

Beneath the tattoos and leather jacket, Finn is kind and sweet, but when he confesses a dark secret to Danny, it tests their fledgling bond. Danny digs deep to accept Finn, but before long, a terrifying trail of death threatens to tear them apart before they’ve even got started.

A monster is killing prostitutes on Danny’s patch, and when a dead girl turns up too close to home, Danny discovers a heartbreaking link between the girl and his bright new life with Finn, a life he’ll do anything to protect.

Bitter TaffyRico Gonzalves-Macias didn't expect to fall in love during his internship in New York—and he didn’t expect the boss’s son to out them both and get him fired either. When he returns to Sacramento stunned and heartbroken, he finds his cousin, Adam, and Adam's boyfriend, Finn, haven't just been house-sitting—they've made his once sterile apartment into a home.

When Adam gets him a job interview with the adorable, magnetic, practically perfect Derek Huston, Rico feels especially out of his depth. Derek makes it no secret that he wants Rico, but Rico is just starting to figure out that he’s a beginner at the really important stuff and doesn’t want to jump into anything with both feet.

Derek is a both-feet kind of guy. But he’s also made mistakes of his own and doesn’t want to pressure Rico into anything. Together they work to find a compromise between instant attraction and long-lasting love, and while they’re working, Rico gets a primer in why family isn’t always a bad idea. He needs to believe Derek can be his family before Derek’s formidable patience runs out—because even a practically perfect boyfriend is capable of being hurt.

When a handsome, smooth-talking developer offers to buy the land out from under his feet, Dare realizes it’s the same man he had to escort home from a party months ago for causing a drunken scene.

Grant Matravers lives a double life, attempting to adjust to weekends as a single, divorced gay man while staying closeted at work. The strain of keeping up the part-time pretense, missing his kids, and now a problematic attraction to the shave-headed, tattooed Dare, has worn his emotional barriers dangerously thin.

Dare blasts through those barriers in a way Grant isn’t prepared for, challenging everything he thought he knew about himself as a gay man. But as their chemistry heats up and the intimacy between them grows, Grant edges toward a decision that could blow up in his face. Exposing a hornet’s nest of complications that could destroy any chance for happily ever after.

Review

This is book 2 and is just as good as book 1. Garret has a way of telling a story that has me unable to leave her books. I really recommend this book, and you can read it as a standalone, but actually you shouldn't, you should read book 1 as well!!!

This story is less about the murders, and more about a Detective who balances work and love, and a singer who has to try desperately to find balance in everything. Beautifully done.

Review

When I was lucky enough to get an early copy of this book I didn't know what to expect from it. Too many times when I read an MMM book it's all about as much sex as possible in as many combinations as possible. In fact I wrote an MMM way WAY back and yep, that is pretty much what it was, just a lot of sex... rofl...

Anyway, I digress. I love Garret's writing, she is an autobuy, and her work is stunningly visual. But still, MMM has to be about the sex, right? Wrong. I should have realised this was a book by THE Garret Leigh, so there is angst and tension and love and completion... and I loved it so much I couldn't put it down.

This book is about love, and finding each other, and learning to live, and realising just what connections can be made. It is thoughtful, and deep, and the focus on tourettes isn't a fourth character, it just exists as part of Jake. There is sex, but it isn't thrown in for no reason, it's part of who the three men are, as couples, or as the three of them together.

An amazing piece of writing. I'm still blown away by it now.

The Book

Cornish pastry chef Seb Wright dreads the summer tourist season. The cash injection to his artisan fudge pantry is more than welcome, the extra work, less so.

Then one summer, a shadowy Good Samaritan catches his eye. Irish Traveller Dex is bewitching, a beautiful sullen enigma who turns Seb's world upside down until he disappears in the night, vanishing like a mystical summer rain.

Twelve months later Dex is in the midst of a dark storm. A slave to his master, 'Uncle' Braden, he spends his days cleaning caravans and his nights working in Braden's other businesses. His short summer with Seb seems a lifetime ago.

Lost in the savage violence of the murky underworld, he doesn't dare dream he'll ever find his way back, until one night, a brutal crime opens the door for a chance escape. A new life beckons, old faces emerge, and immersed in the heady vibe of London’s East End, new love begins to heal his fractured heart.

Taken from Heart…
Dex never ventured to the front of the shop. Civilized he may have been, but he still looked―and smelled―like the vagrant he was. Instead, when he was done with the cleaning, he invariably turned his hand to packing up the Internet orders Seb had let slide, and it fast became clear he was far better at folding gift boxes and tying ribbons than Seb was, something that didn’t go unnoticed by Nicole.

“Is it me, or are you getting much better at this?” she said one day, holding a box up to the light. “Your boxes usually look like a five-year-old packed them.”

Seb scowled but averted his gaze. He’d neglected to tell Nicole about his regular evening visitor. In fact, he hadn’t told anyone about Dex at all. Distracted, he glanced at the clock. It was nearing 5:30 p.m. and closing time. Time for Nicole to leave and Dex to arrive. Without answering her question, he sent her home and locked the front door, trying to ignore the familiar bubble of excitement in the pit of his stomach.

Because, vagrant or not, and despite Dex’s often sullen silence, there was no denying the growing attraction Seb felt. His shock of angelic hair, his shrewd, intelligent eyes. Even his grubby, nail-bitten hands haunted Seb’s dreams.

Sometimes he thought he imagined the invisible current between them. The half smiles, the lingering looks. The zap of energy when their hands brushed. Other days, he allowed himself to become convinced Dex felt it too. After all, it wasn’t the crappy sandwiches that kept him coming back. It couldn’t be. No one liked Marmite that much. Seb drifted to the kitchen to make Dex’s supper and wondered how he’d feel today.

And wondered, and wondered, as, long after the shop was clean and ready for the next day, the sandwich and obligatory bag of Hula Hoops lay on the counter, untouched.

For the first time in weeks, Dex hadn’t stopped by.

Taken from Bold (Blue Boy 3)

Jude drummed his fingers on the desk. “What was the first full sex scene you ever shot?”

“Levi Ramone.” Kai didn’t need to think about it. “The end of last summer.”

“I’ve watched that scene,” Jude said. “I think it’s one of your best. It’s very honest.”

“Honest?”

“Yeah. Natural. You were nervous, but you used that to your advantage and connected with Levi in a way that made him think. You should watch it back, and take note of how he looks at you. You might be surprised by what you find.”

Kai glanced around the office. Gone were the days of utilitarian chairs and filing cabinets. Jude’s office was more like a den. A couch, a dartboard. Photographs from Jude’s own porn star career. Some of the pictures were more graphic than others, but Kai could tell he’d done it all—top, bottom, Dom, sub. He wondered what Jude looked like naked. Somehow, his cock was covered in every shot. “What was your first scene?”

“Me?” Jude’s lips twitched with amusement, but he pushed himself off the desk and pulled a box down from a shelf. “Don’t judge me by the tacky sets. It was the nineties.”

Kai took the old VHS case, and his eyes widened. “Fuck. Is that Mac?”

Jude grinned. “The one and only. That’s how we met.”

“Wow.” Kai was lost for words. He knew Jude used to be a big name in the business, but he’d had no idea Mac was a porn star too. “Did you meet on set and live happily ever after?”

“Not quite. That was my first scene, and his last. He left the industry to become a firefighter. It was ten years before I saw him again.”

A porn star and a firefighter? Suddenly Mac, the boring accountant, had gotten a lot more interesting.

Cute, sweet and fluffy... that is not what this book is. It is angst and emotion and sadness and realisation and love and just plain awesome. There is also a dog. The dog is cute and fluffy. There is a very real ADHD feel to this book. It is frantic in places which only serves to make the quiet times that much more intense. Am a bit gutted because my next Heroes book has a service dog... but I'll try not to worry I can't write it as well as Garrett!

As I thought, I love this book, as I love everything by Garrett. AND I have it in signed paperback as well... so win/win...

Round up of news from some of my favourite authors...

Amber Kell

Amber has a cover reveal and http://amberkell.wordpress.com/ has updated her blog story (unlike me L ) and has news on a new release called Diomedes.

When Diomedes Stollen learns his mother is trying to take over the world he does what any self-respecting demon-vampire would do, he makes a pact with the local werewolf alpha. Or at least he tries, but first he has to clear up a minor kidnapping issue.

Varick Taylor leads one of the largest packs in the city, but when a beautiful man has him stolen from his home he doesn’t know what to do. Luckily his inner wolf is more than happy to claim Dio as his mate.

A demon mother, a vampire father-in-law, and dozens of tiny demons add to the mix as two completely different people try to figure out how to combine their abilities while saving the world.

Meredith Russell

Meredith Russell http://meredithrussellart.blogspot.co.uk/ - has a new book coming from Love Lane Books in the Summer called Alter Ego which is a gorgeous book set in England, and has created wonderful new cover art for so many authors that I don’t know which one to pick. Davlova: a poverty-ridden city-state ruled by a tyrannical upper class. Resources are scarce and technology is illegal. But in the slums, revolution is brewing.
Misha is a common pickpocket until his boss gives him a new job. Disguised as a whore, Misha is sent to work for one of the most powerful men in the city. But his real task is far more dangerous: get close to Miguel Donato, and find something – anything – that will help topple Davlova’s corrupt government.

Misha is plunged into the decadent world of the upper class, where slaves are common and even the most perverse pleasure can be found. Although he’s sure Davlova’s elite is involved in something horrific, proof is hard to come by, and Misha begins to fall in love with the man he’s supposed to betray. Then Misha meets Ayo – a sex slave forced by the neural implant in his brain to take pleasure from pain – and everything changes. As the lower class pushes toward a bloody revolution, Misha will find himself caught between his surprising feelings for Donato, his obligations to his clan, and his determination to save Ayo

SA Meade

SA Meade has a new book out from Totally Bound, Darkness at Endersley follows the story of Josh and more information can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22074646-darkness-at-endersley This is next on my to read list as I loved book 1!

Joshua thought he’d left his past behind, but there’s something in the darkness at Endersley.

Joshua Endersley is glad to leave a broken engagement and his sordid desires behind in London and claim his inheritance on the rolling downs of Wiltshire. What he doesn’t need is temptation in the form of artist, Daniel Wyndham, to remind him of all he wanted to forget.

Joshua finds Daniel impossible to resist and the two men embark on a passionate affair that draws them ever closer. Joshua believes that he can find happiness and live his life the way he wants to in the peace and seclusion of Endersley.

But nothing good can last forever. The very remoteness and solitude that Joshua loves about Endersley turns against him—the darkness at Endersley is deeper and more dangerous than he could have ever imagined.

Eli Easton

Sometimes there are awesome perks to being a writer with writery-type friends. I read Eli Easton’s *The Mating Of Michael* a few weeks back and all I can say is that it is another highly recommended book. Loved it so much and it’s out on 30 June (only three more days!). There is an excerpt here: http://elieaston.com/

Everyone admires Michael Lamont for being a nurse, but his part-time work as a gay sex surrogate not only raises eyebrows, it's cost him relationships. Michael is small, beautiful, and dedicated to working with people who need him. But what he really wants is a love of his own. He spends most of his spare time reading science fiction, especially books written by his favorite author and long-time crush, the mysteriously reclusive J.C. Guise.

James Gallway’s life is slowly but inexorably sliding downhill. He wrote a best-selling science fiction novel at the tender age of eighteen, while bedridden with complications of polio. But by twenty-eight, he's lost his inspiration and his will to live. His sales from his J.C. Guise books have been in decline for years. Wheelchair bound, James has isolated himself, convinced he is unlovable. When he is forced to do a book signing and meets Michael Lamont, he can’t believe a guy who looks like Michael could be interested in a man like him.

Michael and James are made for each other. But they must let go of stubbornness to see that life finds a way and love has no limitations.

Jordan L Hawk

Talking of getting books early, when Jordan L Hawk said would I like to read her latest SPECTR book a month early… what did you think I said… ROFL… let’s just say it’s another recommended-read from me and if you haven’t read Jordan yet they I can only say this… you should… ROFL… Also, Necropolis – Whyborne & Griffin No. 4 is available – love my boys! More news here: http://jordanlhawk.com/

Federal exorcist John Starkweather’s life is in tatters. His best friend Sean betrayed him. SPECTR, the agency he viewed more as a surrogate family than an employer, wants him dead. His only allies are members of the mysterious organization called the Vigilant, whose motives remain in question.

The only thing keeping John together is the presence of his lovers: Caleb Jansen, a powerful telekinetic, and Gray, the vampire spirit possessing Caleb.

Together, they must not only evade capture, but somehow stop SPECTR from building an army of demon possessed soldiers. If they are to succeed, John must question everything he’s ever believed about SPECTR and spirits. And Caleb and Gray must decide how far they’re willing to go—not just for John’s love, but for his very life.

Sue Brown

Sue Brown is writing a series for Love Lane Books *YAY*… think werewolves and ranches… so exciting. She also recently released book 4 in her Lyon Road Vets series https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22294872-stormin-norman 4.5/5 and my favourite of the series so far.

Dan had been Jesse’s partner for many years, and always there for Jesse on his return from difficult assignments. However, after breaking his promise not to leave again, Jesse learns to his cost that Dan can be pushed too far. When he returns home, broken in body and spirit, Jesse finds his house empty and Dan in the arms of someone else.
To fill his life, Jesse decides to get a dog. His friends and neighbours take him to choose a puppy. What he doesn’t expect is for Norman to choose him. As Jesse takes on a new job, with Norman’s assistance, he realises that Dan isn’t far away, and he still loves him. Dan has moved on with his life. Can Jesse do the same?

KJ Charles

Kj Charles had awesome news, she is now a full time writer, which means I get to read more books from her, so it’s a win:win situation… rofl... she has a new book out but sadly I haven’t made it to her list of pre-sends so I am at this moment sicking Jordan on her and getting Jordan to tell her how awesome I am… ROFL… more news from her http://kjcharleswriter.wordpress.com/

Think of England is her new book

Lie back and think of England...

England, 1904. Two years ago, Captain Archie Curtis lost his friends, fingers, and future to a terrible military accident. Alone, purposeless and angry, Curtis is determined to discover if he and his comrades were the victims of fate, or of sabotage.

Curtis’s search takes him to an isolated, ultra-modern country house, where he meets and instantly clashes with fellow guest Daniel da Silva. Effete, decadent, foreign, and all-too-obviously queer, the sophisticated poet is everything the straightforward British officer fears and distrusts.

As events unfold, Curtis realizes that Daniel has his own secret intentions. And there’s something else they share—a mounting sexual tension that leaves Curtis reeling.

As the house party’s elegant facade cracks to reveal treachery, blackmail and murder, Curtis finds himself needing clever, dark-eyed Daniel as he has never needed a man before…

Bullet (Blue Boy #1) - Garrett Leigh

Levi Ramone entered the gay porn market for one reason, and one reason only: he needed the cash to pay his momma's spiraling gambling debts. Seven years later, he's a veteran with a reputation as one of Blue Boy Studio's most ruthless tops, and when his boss suggests it's time for a change, he finds himself staring down the barrel of a gun. Figuratively speaking, at least.

Enter Sonny Valentine, a go-go dancer at Blue's sister club, Silver's. Levi has secretly admired Sonny from afar for years, but there's a problem. He can't stand Sonny and the feeling is entirely mutual. When Levi learns Sonny is to play the third part in a scene he already considers his worst nightmare, he figures things can't get any worse.

But when preparations for the scene from hell collide with tragic events in his personal life, he finds his fast-growing, red-hot attraction to Sonny just might be the only thing left between him and a bullet.

Review 4.5/5

So enjoyed this story. Set in a porn studio I thought this was such a lovely read, so much so I went out and bought book 2 just now...  book 1 puts you straight in the action, and i like that. There is love hate and a growing affection, and some pretty hot sex scenes. A fab novella.

Slide (Roads #1) - Garrett Leigh

Don’t look back. Don’t you ever look back…

Shy tattoo artist Ash has a troubled past. Years of neglect, drug abuse, and life on the streets have taken their toll, and sometimes it seems the deep, unspoken bond with his lover is the only balm for wounds he doesn’t quite understand.

Chicago paramedic Pete is warmth, love, and strength—things Ash never knew he could have, and never even knew he wanted until Pete showed him. But fate is a cruel, cruel mistress, and when nightmares collide with the present, their tentatively built world comes crashing down.

Traumatic events in Pete’s work life distance him from home, and he doesn’t realize until it’s too late that Ash has slipped away. Betrayal, secrets, and lies unfold, and when a devastating coincidence takes hold, Pete must fight with all he has to save the love of his life.

Review 4.5/5

I loved this. This is a beautifully written look at a relationship that crumbles when things locked inside your head suddenly begin to escape. This is a long book but I didn't once put it down and get bored. I just wanted to turn the page and find out how things were going to go. Wonderful story and artfully written. Loved.
