Hump Day Interview - Jay Northcote

Today it's Jay Northcote's turn to sit in the Hump Day Hot Seat...

What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Battling against my own insecurity. Every new project feels impossible! But somehow I find a way through it.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I think I only have one that’s got a significant amount of words that I’ve abandoned and not come back to yet. But I might finish it eventually. The Law of Attraction languished three chapters in for a year or so before I finally went back to it, and that ended up being one of my most popular books yet.

Have you ever gotten reader’s block?

Yes! I have a terrible case of it at the moment actually. I think there is so much going on in my life that I just don’t have the focus and concentration to spend on reading. I can literally manage about ten minutes at night before I fall asleep. I really miss it though. Reading used to be a huge source of pleasure and relaxation and I hope I will get it back soon.

What are you reading right now and what is next on your to-be-read list?

I’m currently re-reading a favourite book – Vespertine by Leta Blake and Indra Vaughn. Even though my daily reading time is sorely limited I’m loving it. It’s such a great story and it’s wonderful to revisit it. I’m not sure what’s up next for me; I think it might be some proof-reading for Garrett Leigh, which definitely won’t be a chore!

Do you keep a file of plot ideas?

Yes haha. I have a ridiculous gdoc of random one line plot summaries that might one day turn into bestsellers (a guy can dream, right?). Some of them might even be paragraph summaries. I read through them periodically and chuckle. How many of them will ever see the light of day, I don’t know. But at least I know I will never be short of a story idea.

Will Rowan’s festival fling with sexy dancer Seth lead to something more permanent?

Rowan is stuck at a folk festival helping out a mate, and it really isn’t his scene. The yoga and singing workshops are bad enough, but morris dancing is the final straw. Bearded men with beer guts prancing around wearing bells—who wants to watch that?

All Rowan’s preconceptions are shattered when he meets Seth—a morris dancer, and the stuff Rowan’s fantasies are made of. Seth persuades Rowan to come to a dancing workshop, and Rowan’s willing to do whatever it takes to get to know Seth better. The attraction is mutual, and a lesson filled with innuendo and flirting leads to an incredible night together.

When Rowan arrives home, he’s gutted to find that Seth has given him the wrong phone number. Assuming Seth did it on purpose, Rowan resolves to forget about him. But fate—and friends—conspire to get them back together. Will they manage to stay in step this time around?

Twelve Days of Christmas: Day 6 Jay Northcote

Today's special guest is Jay Northcote, take it away Jay...

Hi

Thank you, RJ, for welcoming me to your blog today to talk a little about my Christmas story, A Family for Christmas.

My previous two Christmas books (Cold Feet and What Happens at Christmas) both had the characters alone together for Christmas, cut off from their friends and families by snow—which actually rarely happens in the UK, but it’s called fiction for a reason! So, this year I wanted to do something different. I decided to go completely the opposite way and write a story centred around a big family gathering.

The family in question belong to Rudy, who has more than his fair share of siblings, aunts, parents and grandparents. In contrast, Zac was brought up in foster care and has no family of his own to go home to. When Zac agrees to spend Christmas with Rudy and his family, the warmth and love surrounding him over the Christmas period help to break down the walls around his heart. He ends up falling for Rudy’s crazy, chaotic family almost as much as he falls for Rudy himself.

I’m giving away a copy of one of my ebooks (winner’s choice). In order to enter the giveaway, please leave a comment on this post.

Cover by Garrett Leigh
The Book

Zac never had a family of his own, but Rudy has enough to share.

Shy, inexperienced Rudy has a crush on Zac from the moment his new colleague walks through the door. On an office night out before Christmas, Rudy finds the courage to make a move, and they form a tentative bond. When he discovers Zac will be alone at Christmas, he invites Zac to come home with him.

Zac prefers to keep people at arm’s length. Yet when Rudy offers him a family Christmas it’s impossible to resist. With no parents of his own, Zac is pleasantly surprised to be welcomed by Rudy’s. The only drawback is that everyone assumes they’re a couple. Unwilling to disappoint Rudy’s mum and make Christmas awkward, they decide not to deny it.

It’s not a chore for Zac to pose as Rudy’s boyfriend, but the pretence makes him want things that scare him—things like a real relationship with Rudy. Zac’s suffered enough rejection in his life already and is afraid to risk his heart. If he can get over his past rejection and let Rudy inside his armour, he might get more for Christmas than he ever imagined.

Review: A warm romantic story.

Sexy, romantic, gorgeous... The Housemates Series from Jay Northcote

Jay Northcote recently released the third book in her Housemates series, Practice Makes Perfect. And if you follow me on Facebook you will know I love her writing, and these are my favourite books of hers!

All three of the Housemates stories have different main characters and can be read as standalones, but it’s probably best to read them in order. They’re fun, sexy feel good reads in a university/college setting. And I love them all... in fact I'm attempting to encourage her to write another one for Christmas!

I've reviewed all three and they are all 5/5.... Jay just has a way of writing that I love - go read book 1, I don't think you'll be disappointed!

The book

Getting experience with the guy next door seems like a great idea—until the lines blur.

Dev, a geeky first year physics student, has zero sexual experience and he’s determined to change that ASAP. After a bad time in halls of residence, he’s starting the summer term with different housemates and a new plan of action.

Ewan lives in the house next door to Dev. He’s young, free and single, and isn’t looking to change that anytime soon. When awkward circumstances throw them together, Ewan offers to help Dev out in the bedroom in return for maths tutoring, and Dev jumps at the chance.

They work their way through Dev’s sex-to-do list, but what starts as a perfect no-strings arrangement gets more complicated as their feelings for each other begin to grow. If they’re going to turn their lessons in lovemaking into something more permanent, they need to work out how they feel about each other—before they get to the end of Dev’s list.

Excerpt

Sitting on his bed, Dev yawned, his full stomach making him sleepy. He stared at his phone as he contemplated calling home but decided he couldn’t face it tonight. He loved his mum, but she did tend to bang on. Once she got him on the line, she’d end up talking for ages and asking him a million questions he was too tired to answer. Instead, he sent his mum a quick text.

All moved in, everything’s good. I’m shattered now so I’m going to have an early night. I’ll call you tomorrow.

She replied within seconds as though she’d been waiting for him to call.

Okay sweetie, glad you’re settled. Sleep well xxx

He picked up his notepad and crossed off phone home. Texting counted. He also crossed off everything else on his list for today. That was Saturday done.

Dev set his notepad aside, opened his laptop, and pulled up his lists app. He liked his notepad for day-to-day organisation; it gave him a certain satisfaction to cross out the things he’d done and to get to the end of the day with all the tasks completed. But for longer-term planning, he kept his lists on his Mac, synced to his phone.

For the first time in six months, Dev could breathe again. Finally he had a safe place where he could get back on track and look to the future. He began to type.

Things To Do This Term

He stared at the words on the screen and sighed. That seemed like a lot of things to aim for. But it was good to have goals, right? Jez and Mac seemed really nice, so hopefully Dev was already on his way to achieving the first objective. And that bloke Ewan… Dev’s mind conjured up the image of the flame-haired hunk who lived next door. Ewan had been friendly.

Maybe there was potential there too.

Blurb: When a professional relationship turns personal, it’s impossible to resist the law of attraction.

Alec Rowland is a high-flying lawyer in a London firm whose career is his life. He doesn’t have time for relationships and his sexuality is a closely guarded secret. After picking up a cute guy on a Friday night, Alec’s world is rocked to its foundations when his one night stand shows up in the office on Monday morning—as the new temp on his team.

Ed Piper is desperate to prove himself in his new job. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by a crush on his boss. It’s hard to ignore the attraction he feels, even though Alec’s a difficult bastard to work for.

Both men strive to maintain a professional relationship, but tempers fray, passions ignite, and soon they’re both falling hard and fast. If they’re ever going to find a way to be together, Alec needs to be honest about who he really is because Ed won’t go back in the closet for anyone.

Review: This book ticked so many of the tropes I love, one night stands, workmates, understanding family, not so understanding family. It was a delicious read, and very sexy, and I devoured it in one sitting. Highly recommended...

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 7 - Jay Northcote

Today's visiting author is the fabulous Jay Northcote.

For her giveaway Jay is offering an ebook from her back catalogue including her Christmas story - details below. A winner will be picked on 26th December at 6pm, GMT.

Question 1: What is your favourite Christmas movie?
I have a huge soft spot for The Snowman, even though it makes me cry, because I associate it with my childhood. I just adore the music and Aled Jones’s angelic choirboy voice.
Question 2: What is your best Christmas memory?
I’m not sure I have one specific one. Lots of good memories of childhood Christmases kind of roll into one. I always adored Christmas as a child because as the youngest of a large family, it was one of the few times in the year when all three of my sisters came home at the same time. I remember lots of laughter, silliness, and fun.
Question 3: What is the best present you’ve received?
A few years after my mum died, one of my sisters gave me a photo box with old pictures of my mum and dad in it, including some of my mum and me together. That was a really lovely gift because I didn’t have many photos of her.
Question 4: What is the best present you’ve given?
Last year I gave Mr Northcote a pair of Wallace and Gromit hankies, because of schmoopy romantic reasons. It’s a long story, but the short version is that we wouldn’t have ended up together if it hadn’t been for a pair of Wallace and Gromit hankies that he used for morris dancing with. How could I not fall head over heels in love with someone who is adorable enough to be excited by Wallace and Gromit hankies? The original ones are long gone, so I bought him a new set <3
Question 5: Santa Claus – real or fake?
Fake, thankfully. If a real random guy turned up at my house and tried to come down my chimney (that sounds dirtier out loud than it did in my head) I’d freak out!
Question 6: What is your favourite Christmas book?
Blame it on the Mistletoe by Eli Easton. I must re-read it this year. It’s such a cute story.
Question 7: Do you like eggnog?
I’ve never tried it.
Question 8: What do you eat at Christmas?
We have the traditional British thing of roast turkey (nut roast for the vegetarians), stuffing, roast potatoes, sprouts (of course) and carrots. We don’t bother with Christmas pudding though, because nobody really likes it. We just eat lots of chocolate and cheese instead.
Question 9: Be honest, when do you put up the Christmas tree?
As late as possible. I like to delay the gratification because then I’m more excited about it. We usually put it about about 7-10 days before Christmas, usually on a weekend.
Question 10: When do you open your presents?
After breakfast on Christmas morning, but the kids open their stockings as soon as they wake up.
Question 11: Do you have snow at Christmas?
Sadly, very rarely. I can remember it twice in my lifetime I think. I have high hopes for this year, that will probably be dashed when it rains again.
Question 12: What is the best – all-time – Christmas song. Ever!
Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie. That was in the charts when I was a kid and I’ve loved it ever since.

Blurb: When two friends pose as boyfriends, could what happens at Christmas turn into something more?

Justin is recently and unhappily single. Christmas is coming, and he doesn’t want to face his ex alone at their office party. So Sean—Justin’s best mate and long-time secret crush—volunteers to go with him and pretend to be his new flame.

Sean has always lusted after Justin from afar, but there’s never been a good opportunity to ask him for more than friendship. Posing as Justin’s boyfriend isn’t a chore, and if Justin wants to rebound onto him, Sean’s more than willing. At the party pretence and reality blur, and a kiss on the dance floor leads to a night of passion.

In the aftermath, they both assume it was a one-time thing until fate intervenes. Stuck together in London over the holidays, they give in to temptation again. But what happens at Christmas stays at Christmas... right?

RJ Invites... Jay Northcote

This month I've invited the fabulous Jay Northcote to guest on my blog.

Favourite Tropes in Gay Romance

Hi,

Thanks to the fabulous RJ Scott for offering me a guest slot on her blog. It’s lovely to be here :)

As a writer of gay romance, I sometimes feel that I’m writing the same story over and over again. I suppose in a sense I am. When we pick up a romance book, we always know how it will end. The HEA is why we read it, and why we love it. The story is all about the journey, how those two characters connect and end up together. But inevitably there are a lot of common themes and tropes that recur, and as a writer it’s really tempting to keep writing my favourite ones.

Anyone reading who knows my work might be able to guess some of my favourite tropes to write, but for those who don’t, the themes that tend to keep cropping up in my stories are:

Friends to Lovers
I love it when the characters already have that basis of friendship on which to build a relationship. But I also love the vulnerability, and potential for heartbreak when they fear their feelings aren’t reciprocated.

Sexual partners to lovers (fuck buddies, escort and client…)
My characters often fuck first and fall in love later. Personally I think this is pretty realistic, and it’s also fun to write if you like writing sex scenes—and I do. The challenge for me is to show their developing relationship through the physical connection in a way that makes the sex an integral part of the story.
My very first release, Nothing Serious, was a fuck buddies to lovers story and since then I’ve written several other stories where my characters jump into bed long before they fall in love. My most recent release, Like a Lover, (see below for more details) deals with an escort and his client falling in love.

Sexual discovery
Some of my books get labelled as GFY (gay for you), and I can understand why. But I prefer to think of them as stories of sexual discovery. In many cases sexuality is way more complex and subtle than gay/straight. I enjoy exploring that diversity through my characters and their relationships. How they choose to identify themselves may vary. For example, Mac and Jez never really identify as gay in Helping Hand. But they end up in love with each other and are okay with that.

First Love
This ties in with the sexual discovery trope, but it’s about so much more than just the sex. I adore writing the tentative, uncertainty of characters as they fall in love for the first time. I think anyone who has ever been in love, always remembers the first time they felt it, how powerful it was, how all consuming. That sudden realisation of, Holy shit, so this is why there are so many songs and books written about this!
So, yeah. I never get tired of writing (or reading) about characters taking that leap for the first time.

I suppose it goes without saying, that all of the tropes I love to write I also love to read. But for my favourite tropes to read I would also add the following:

Forbidden love
I have a huge soft spot for characters who have to hide, or try to deny their feelings. Priests, young men in homophobic religious communities... they’re my kryptonite, as long as they get their HEA.

Sports stories
This ties in with the forbidden love theme, as at least one of the characters is usually in the closet and fearing being outed. But I also love the whole locker room, masculine, team bonding vibe in sports stories. Hockey is a particular favourite for me.

What are your favourite tropes to read? I’d love to know. Please tell me in a comment. Thanks for reading!

Josh has a plan: get through uni with a good degree and no debts. Focused on his goals, he’s working as an escort to pay his way. He enjoys the no-strings sex and doesn’t have the time or inclination for a relationship. Falling in love definitely isn’t part of the deal—especially not with a client.

When Rupert meets Josh in a bar, he’s smitten on sight. He’s never paid for sex before, but when Josh propositions him, he can’t resist. He should have known one night would never be enough. Luckily for him, he has an inheritance to support his addiction to Josh, because his job in IT wouldn’t cover the cost.

With each appointment the lines get increasingly blurred. Something is developing between them that feels more like a relationship than a business transaction, but they come from different worlds and to go from client-and-escort to lovers seems impossible. If they want a future together, Josh and Rupert have a lot to overcome.

“I like your lip ring,” Rupert said. His gaze dropped lower to Josh’s collarbones. “What are your tattoos of?”
“Swallows.” Rupert would just be able to see the wing tips that showed in this low-necked T-shirt. “Two of them.”
“Have you got any other tattoos?”
Josh gave a slow, teasing smile. “Maybe. Do you want me to show you?”
Rupert met his eyes again. There was a flicker of uncertainty before he answered. “Yes. I’d like that.”
Josh turned over the possibilities in his mind. It had been a long time since he’d had sex for anything other than for money. He usually saw clients at least three nights a week. They scratched the itch for him, and he didn’t have the time or inclination to hook up with other guys. He hadn’t dated since he’d started working as an escort. Josh didn’t like lying about his job, but most guys didn’t want to date escorts.
It would be easy to pick Rupert up tonight, though, and have no-strings sex with him for fun rather than cash. But Josh’s rent was due.
“Me too. But it’ll cost you,” he finally said.
Rupert frowned, obvious confusion crossing his features as he tried to make sense of Josh’s words. “What? I don’t—”
“You’re hot, and I wish I could do this without asking you for money. But a client let me down this evening. I have a hotel room booked and paid for next door, and I need someone to cover the cost for me.” The lie came smoothly. “I can’t afford to have sex for free tonight.”
Rupert’s mouth dropped open. Shock was evident on his face, but there was something else that was harder to read. His cheeks flooded pink again and his eyes went dark. “You’re….” His voice came out husky, and he cleared his throat. “You’re a….”
“A sex worker. An escort, to be precise. Hooker, rent boy, you get the gist. I’m an expensive one too. But my clients think I’m worth the money.” Josh waited, tension making a muscle tick in his jaw as he forced himself to stay still and hold Rupert’s gaze. On the occasions he’d tried picking up clients face-to-face, their reactions had varied. Interest, anger, excitement, disgust… he’d seen them all. He steeled himself, ready for rejection.
Rupert licked his lips. “How much?” he finally asked.

  • Everyone admires Michael Lamont for being a nurse, but his part-time work as a gay sex surrogate not only raises eyebrows, it's cost him relationships. Michael is small, beautiful, and dedicated to working with people who need him. But what he really wants is a love of his own. He spends most of his time reading science fiction, especially books written by his favorite author and long-time crush, the mysteriously reclusive J.C. Guise.

Blurb:

Wanking with a mate isn’t gay—as long as you keep your hands to yourself.

Jez Fielding and James MacKenzie—Big Mac to his mates—are in their second year at uni. After partying too hard last year, they make a pact to rein themselves in. While their housemates are out drinking every weekend, Jez and Mac stay in to save cash and focus on their studies.

When Jez suggests watching some porn together, he isn’t expecting Mac to agree to it. One thing leads to another, and soon their arrangement becomes hands-on rather than hands-off. But falling for your straight friend can only end badly, unless there’s a chance he might feel the same.

Excerpt:

Afterwards, Jez blamed the alcohol for loosening his tongue, because he didn’t think about it before he spoke. The words tumbled out before he could stop them.
“Man, I’m seriously horny now. Have you got any decent porn on that laptop?”
“Huh?” Mac snapped his head around to meet Jez’s gaze. Jez’s heart pounded erratically, but his dick was still standing to attention. “What… you mean, you want to wank in here? Now? Wouldn’t that be weird?” Mac sounded seriously freaked out.
Jez backtracked quickly, cheeks hot. “It doesn’t have to be weird. I’ve done it before with guys at school, and it’s never been a big deal. But don’t worry about it. I’ll go and watch my own stash instead. But I need something soon, ’cause I’m gonna explode after watching that sex scene.”
Jez was expecting an instant no from Mac. He wouldn’t have blamed him. A lot of guys wouldn’t be into what Jez was suggesting. Jez’s heart still thumped hard, but his arousal didn’t abate despite his anxiety. He was shocked by how much he wanted this.
Mac bit his lip and frowned. “Seriously. You’ve done that?”
Jez shrugged, trying to look nonchalant. “Yeah. Like I said, it was no big deal. Just guys messing around.”
Mac stared a moment longer, then he stood, and Jez’s heart sank as he walked away. But Mac only went to fetch his laptop from the dining table. He sat back down and then opened it and tapped in his password.
“What sort of stuff do you wanna watch?” Mac’s voice was gruff and he focused on the screen rather than Jez.
Fuck. They were really going to do this, then.
