Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 12 - 2015 and Happy Christmas

2015

Christmas is like the end of the year for me. And yes, I know it's in December and therefore it is technically the *end of the year* for everyone. But, I mean, it's when I stop and take stock of everything that has happened in the year so far.  I've released new stories this year. Had Sean Crisden narrate audios of four of my books. Released translations of Sanctuary books 1 - 3. I have attended three awesome cons (GRL, UK Meet, Euro Meet).

It's been a really busy year, and I hope that 2016 is just as busy, and that I manage to achieve as much as I have this year.

So, as this is my last post in the Twelve Days of Christmas, I just want to say...

Happy Christmas, Merry Christmas, Season's Greetings... and all kinds of love and goodwill to you all... Love you all xxx

RJ X

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 11 - Next Years Christmas Story

Next Years Christmas Story

This is an interesting thing to  think about. Next years Christmas book. SO far we have had:

The Christmas Throwaway (2010)
Texas Winter (originally released - 2011)
Jesse's Christmas (originally released - 2011)
The Journal of Sanctuary One (2012)
New York Christmas (2012)
Texas Christmas (2013)
Christmas In The Sun (2013)
Angel In a Book shop (2014)
Christmas Collection (2015)
Love's Design (2015)

2016 will be book 3 in the Legacy Series... and/or The Road To Frosty Hollow ... and/or The King Of Christmas which is an entirely new idea based around these cheesy Christmas films I love to watch so much. The idea of King came to me in a conversation with hubby and I am so excited by it I would like to write it now... only I can't as it's a Christmas story... LOL

Legacy is three books based on characters introduced in Texas Fall. The books will feature cameo's from Riley, Jack et al, and the first book in the series is due Summer 2016. The Road to Frosty Hollow is entirely Meredith Russell's fault. She created a beautiful cover and I stole it...

So as you can see I am pretty excitable when it comes to Christmas stories ;)

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 10 - Christmas TV

Christmas TV

Back in the old days, when we only had three channels (BBC1, BBC2 and ITV) we would have a choice of what to watch Christmas Day. Usualy there was a Bond film, and on the other side would be Wizard of Oz, or some such kind of film. Of course this was always after The Queen's Speech which was always watched by my parents and grandparents.

But the good stuff was after tea (meal at around 7ish)... The Morecombe and Wise Christmas special. OMG, how that made me laugh, classic slapstick comedy that never failed to reduce me to tears of laughter. And then, later, The Two Ronnies. I am sure a lot of the jokes were over my head, but I can say I was there the year Angela Rippon danced (and only if you are a Brit will you get that!).

Of course News at Ten meant supper, and then bed, and Christmas Day was over. :(

Do you remember TV shows from your childhood at Christmas?

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 9 - Christmas break

Center Parcs

Every year, just before or after Christmas, we go to Center Parcs. This is a whole lot of cabins in a forest, with a sub tropical swimming paradise, and restaurants, and no cars. We have been going since before the kids were born, and it's the place where Matt has learned the first bits of independence.

Center Parcs is all fenced in, and he knows his way around the sites so well that we can trust him to go for walks. This was actually the first place we trusted him to go out by himself.

This year we have Geocache, Pottery Painting, Swimming, Pool, Football, Ten Pin bowling ... so many things booked in. Not forgetting the three hour spa visit that I am so looking forward to.

At Christmas everything is lit up, and there is a fireworks display one evening. Everything is chilly and dark (the place isn't lit much after dark) so you feel like you are cosy in your cabin in the forest. Love it!

Do you have a special place you like to go on holiday or to have a short break?

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 8 - The Perfect Snowman

The Perfect Snowman

,,,is something I have never built in my entire lifetime.

See, we don't have a lot of snow in England, and when we do i realise I get very cold out there in snow land and so I don't last very long!

I think the last time I built a snowman my daughter (now 19) was probably 5, and Matt was 2. I remember Matt in his snowsuit and Briony moaning as much as I did about cold hands.

The best bit of building a snowman is surely the hot chocolate after!

In Love's Design, it actually snows, and there is actual snowman building, and snow angels and all other kinds of snow related stuff.

Do you have a lot of snow where you are? Do you build snowmen?

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 7 - Christmas Collection

Christmas Collection

Way back in 2009 (Just around New Year and into 2010) I wrote a short story called Ascension, and it was accepted by DSP into their anthology, A Brush Of Wings.

It was based on the fact an angel actually ascends to become human, and it wasn't a long story. When the rights reverted to me, I decided to extend the story, explore the dynamics of the book shop, and the reason an angel may look for love. The story became Angel in a Book Shop, and was released Christmas 2014.

Thing is, it was never put to print, so I had this idea of putting it along with Jesse's Christmas (2011, extended 2013) and -  ( a free short story Christmas gift from 2013) and make sure it went to print. I also decided to release it as an e-book, where the whole bundled collection could be priced well.

I hope you enjoy the collection!

Angel in a bookshop
What happens when a broken man has to trust in the impossible?

Jesse's Christmas
For Jesse Connor, Christmas is nothing but a series of bad memories. It takes a man imbued with the spirit of Christmas to help him realize that the Christmas spirit lies in everyone. If they only know where to look.

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 6 - Christmas songs

Christmas songs

Nothing says Christmas to me like the Christmas playlist. Actually I started listening to Christmas music in early November - my excuse for this was that I was writing my Christmas story. I'm sticking to that excuse!

I have a playlist full of the classics but my top three music choices for Christmas (this year, number 2 and 3 change every year, number 1 NEVER changes...

At number 3 - One More Sleep, Leona Lewis. I only discovered this in November, and it's so hopelessly upbeat and positive and I can't stop singing it!

At number 2 - Thank God it's Christmas. This song always makes me feel a little meloncholy and every time I hear it I get a little choked up. For me, this is the song that always reminds me of Freeie Mercury.

And at number 1, where it has been FOREVER...

I believe in Father Christmas, Greg Lake. Oh song, how I love thee... the sentiment, the christmas video in a desert, the vocals... *so much love*

What is your favorite Christmas song?

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 5 - Autism and Christmas

Autism and Christmas

As many of you will know, and some wont, my son is 16 and has autism. He still believes in Father Christmas, and we don't ever want that taken away from him. The only issue is... and follow this... Father Christmas is magic. He knows what you want. Therefore if you think the list of what you want in your head then Father Christmas will know exactly what you want.

Therefore, there is no point in telling Mum and Dad. At all.

You can see the problem. LOL.

Christmas Day is chaos, and Matt hates to be watched doing things. So we can't watch him open his presents. He opens them in the hallway, and often isn't keen on opening the last of his presents at all, until we are all safely up at the table playing games. This year is the first time he is going into town with his own money to buy presents for us all. I can't see how that will go wrong at all. I'm excited and happy that he has had a good year and feels he can do this, and I am doubly excited to see what he chooses for us all.

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 4 - New York & New York Christmas

New York Christmas

New York fascinates me. My sister is lucky enough to have been, and one day I will get there.

Meanwhile I write about it after watching TV shows, talking to people who live there, and who have visited, and research a lot of blogs and other resources.

When I decided to write about a cop and a school teacher, it seemed to me that New York at Christmas became the third character in the book. The snow, the tree, the ice skating, and I loved writing it.

New York Christmas

Can a New York cop and a teacher find love in the city at Christmas?

It's been far too long since Christian Matthews has seen Daniel Bailey. In fact the last time they met was in college.

Seven years down the road, Chris is licking his wounds after being 'asked to leave' the private school where he was teaching. He has no job, no money, and has to rely on his friend Amelia for a job and a room to live in. He needs a freaking Christmas miracle to make this Season anything other than a total loss.

Then Daniel comes back into his life and suddenly everything seems possible. Not only is Daniel still the man Christian wants more than anything, but this time Chris may well actually tell Daniel how he feels.

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 3 - The Christmas Throwaway

Sequels & things

One question I always get is *Will there be a sequel to The Christmas Throwaway*?

My answer is always no, and I think I feel this way because even though I have an entire novel in my head as a sequel I find it impossible to imagine I would do it justice.

TCT is my best selling book, along with Texas 1, and I have so many emails about it, lovely beautiful emails that tell me that this is their favorite book. How can I even top that? Thing is maybe, one day, I'll feel like I can write it.

What do you think? Should I leave it? Or would you forgive me if I completely fucked it up? LOL.

The Christmas Throwaway

Christmas is a time for giving - what do you do when no one gives a damn?

For Zachary Weston Christmas means sleeping on a churchyard bench in the freezing snow with nothing better in his future. Thrown out of his home for being gay, he is left without money or, it seems, anywhere to go. Until a stranger shows him that some people do give a lot more than a damn.

Ben Hamilton is a rookie cop in his small home town. He finds a young throwaway, fresh from the city, sleeping on a bench in the churchyard on a snowy Christmas Eve. Can he be the one to give Zachary his own Christmas miracle?

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 2 - Christmas Films

Christmas Films

Hands up who loves a good Christmas movie? Ones where it snows on Christmas day and the family all stand outside hugging and looking at the snow!

I love a good Christmas movie, but when it comes to making a list of them there are some that you may not think are actually Christmas movies at all. I looked back at last years post about movies and very little has changed...

Lethal Weapon

Like Die Hard, this isn't a story about Christmas, more a film set at Christmas. I love the sleigh bells, the tree, the cat, the dog, the buddy movie idea, the fight in the rain, Mel's acting (even though he's a dick, back then he was sex. Just that. Sex.)

IMDB Entry IMDB Link

Die Hard

Such a Christmas Movie even if it doesn't seem like it at first sight. The music, the lights, the absolutely perfect hero movie...

IMDB Link

A Christmas Carol

Possibly one of my most loved actors in one of my most loved adaptations of A Christmas Carol...

Enchanting, gorgeous, and quite possibly the only time I have fancied Scrooge.

IMDB link

The Holiday

I wish everyone in England lived in a village... in a cottage... with snow... at Christmas... sadly that doesn't happen but I like that Hollywood thinks it does. This story is predictable and therefore is a perfect Christmas romance with a Brit and a American swapping homes for Christmas...

Would love to see this remade as a gay movie. Who's with me on that? Actually I would LOVE to write this as a gay romance... sighs... IMDB Link

Twelve Days of Christmas, Day 1 - Love's Design (Bodyguards Inc book 5)

Love's Design

I'd always planned to stop Bodyguards at book 4.

Well, not stop at four, but certainly have a break before I wrote book 5.

And then something happened. I had a story I wanted to write, a man and his neice and nephew, stranded, trying to excape something awful, meet a man who helps them. Then I thought, my hero needs a strong man, a hero, someone with connections.

And so, there was Stefan's story all done and ready to write. And when Meredith did this stunning cover the story just flowed for me. The actual writing of this story was an absolute pleasure. You may not have noticed, but I love writing Christmas stories, and this book is no different. We ave snow, and danger, and children, and presents, and a tree, and a Christmas love story. I really hope you enjoy.

Love's Design (Bodyguards Inc book 5)

Can Christmas be the time when Kirby finally stops running and allows himself to fall in love with the man who saves his life?

CIA Agent Stefan Mortimer is cooling his heels in the UK until he can go home. Taking on easy assignments with Bodyguards Inc. seems like a good solution to keep him sane. He's used to life throwing him curveballs, and it’s just another day at the office when he rescues Kirby Devlin and his niece and nephew. Now he has to keep Kirby and the kids alive and stay professional.

Kirby Devlin has one priority; keeping his small family safe. On the run, and facing danger at every turn, Kirby finally runs out of places to hide on a snowy December day at Edinburgh airport. Stefan comes to the rescue, saves him and the children. Is it possible that Kirby finally has someone to trust?

Now, if only it would be as easy for Kirby to trust Stefan with his heart.

Blurb: In a snowy small town in England, just before Christmas, garage mechanic David and office worker Christian are preparing to spend the festive period with Christian's parents. The parents who told Christian last year he wasn't welcome to their family festive celebrations since he told them he was gay.

But this year it will be different, the parents welcome their son and his boyfriend, David with open arms; different except for when it comes to their sleeping arrangements.

Will David and Christian's love overcome prejudice and old-fashioned views?

Can David actually enjoy playing Pictionary?

Will David's best friend, Tony stay sober enough to offer his own particular brand of no nonsense advice from his perfect Christmas with friends, when David is up to his neck in family problems?

Excerpt:

Note: may contain sexually explicit scenes of a homoerotic nature.
I walked through the door to my flat and overheard Christian on the phone in the spare bedroom. I wanted to wash off the garage smell from my body, even though he always said it was sexy, I wasn’t convinced, and it wasn't sexy to me anyway. As I walked past where he was talking, I caught a few words.

“I know it's new to you. I understand that. But he's my boyfriend. We're together. And it's the twenty-first century.”

Knowing it was wrong, but unable to stop myself, I stood outside the door, holding my breath.

“Mum, if I could talk to Dad, I'm sure I could explain.” There was a long pause, then, “I thought he was all right. Now he's met him. Now he's seen us together. That's why we did it gradually over the year. It's not a big shock seeing him at your place.” Another pause. “She won't care, she's too young to care. Besides, he's my boyfriend.” Pause. “I won't stop using that word. Because he is my boyfriend. I know you're okay with it. But why should I kowtow to Dad. It's his problem and he needs to deal with it.” Pause. “Yes, you know I do. We've both been looking forward to coming to yours for Christmas for ages. I know what compromise means, Mum.” He sighed loudly.

I'd heard enough, so I quietly walked outside and walked around my red Mini, with its Union Flag roof, thinking of what I could do now. My hands shook as I held them in front of me. First I washed the bodywork, rinsing off the dirt, then washing it with hot soapy water, then buffing up the metal to an as new shine. Then, knowing I still wasn't ready to go back inside and face any conversation about anything much really, I opened the bonnet and began changing the spark plugs, then moved onto the air filter, and as I was starting to top up the radiator and check the battery's charge Christian's voice appeared behind me.

“We need to go. Are you packed and ready?”

I turned to face him in his skinny blue jeans and a baggy sleeveless Madonna tour T-shirt. “What have I said about clothes in this weather?”

“Are you ready?” He folded his arms across his chest.

“I'm making sure we're safe for the drive. Roads are dangerous. Black ice, white snow, traffic jams. It's all going on at the moment according to the news.”

“So you are ready to go? Great. I'll bring my bag down in a few minutes, then we can be on our way, to miss the big getaway rush.”

“If it snows more, we'll be stuck. We could end up stranded. Stuck at your parents. Because that's the thing about snow isn't it, you always want to be snowed in, and not snowed out. Imagine being snowed out.”

“What are you on about?” Christian started to close the bonnet.

I held his hands gently to stop him. “Nothing.” I bit my lip, remembered what Tony and I had discussed last night, finished what I was in the middle of doing, closed the bonnet and then said, “I'm done now. Come in, it's bloody freezing out here.” I hugged his thin cold body to mine, took off my jacket and wrapped it around him.

“Thanks,” he said, squeezing my hand as we walked across the car park back to the front door of the building.

We stood in silence in the lift, still holding hands, and then Christian said, “I love you, you know, you big silly fuzzy handyman bear. Sorry about the strop yesterday.”

I squeezed his hand. “Love you, too.” I leant down to kiss him, his smooth face against my beard, our cheeks brushing together.

He pushed himself closer to my body, his loose hand reached around to squeeze my bum, and pull us closer together.

What would you give up for love?

Raziel Slade and Jack Hastings have been best friends since Raz saved Jack’s life twelve years ago. Jack has spent years searching for the perfect woman with the help of his wingman, Raz, the man he thinks of as his guardian angel. At a company Christmas party, the world Jack thought he knew turns on its axis, and feelings he didn’t know he had punch him right between the eyes. Can Jack learn to see his friend in an entirely different way?

Openly gay, Raz loves his best friend and has given up more than Jack will ever know to be with him, but he’s never dared to tell Jack how he truly feels, or to reveal his true identity. For twelve years, he has waited in the wings.

Now, with Jack’s sudden epiphany, can these two best friends work out if they have a future together?

Author Bio

Originally from South Wales, Alexa has lived for over thirty years in the North West of England. Now retired, after a long career in teaching, she devotes her time to her obsessions.

Alexa began writing when her favourite character was killed in her favourite show. After producing a lot of fanfiction she ventured into original writing.

She is currently owned by a mad cat and spends her time writing about the men in her head, watching her favourite television programmes and usually crying over her favourite football team.

Excerpt:

Angelo Raziel Slade glared at the bathroom door behind which stood his best friend, Jack Hastings. He shrugged on his jacket and sat on the bed. “For heaven’s sake, Jack, stop complaining. This is your work’s Christmas party, and we’re only here because I’m tired of you whining about your pathetic love life.”

“I realize that, but you know how much I hate these occasions. Last year— No, I don’t want to remember that debacle. I want it made clear that I’m only here because you insisted and said you’d come with me. You know what I’m like.”

Raz sighed. He certainly did.

“I’m hopeless with small talk. Women come up to me and I panic. How come you can speak to women? Is it something to do with being gay? Do you lot have a special understanding of how women think, or what?”

Jack emerged from the bathroom, opened his arms wide and twirled. “So, will I do?” he asked.

Raz swallowed a gasp and crossed his legs. Oh, my God. You will do, but you could wear a sack and you’d do for me. “You clean up well. I told you a suit would be better. Women prefer men in a suit, but with more than a hint of stubble and the suggestion there might be something worth investigating underneath.”

“Is that the sort of men you like?” Jack asked.

Raz stood and closed the distance between them. “This tie needs adjusting, though. Here, let me do it.” Up close, the smell of his friend’s aftershave filled his senses. Why did he torture himself in this way? So I can be near him. Because I can’t bear the idea of not being near him.

“There, that’s better. A tie needs a Windsor knot. My father used to say you should always make an effort to be at your best.”

“You must miss them at this time of year,” Jack said, placing a hand on Raz’s arm.

Raz stared over Jack’s shoulder through the window into the dark December night. “My father was always too busy saving the planet to have much time for me, and I don’t remember my mother.”

“Just as well that my family love the bones of you then. You are still coming to ours for Christmas Day, aren’t you? Mum and Dad would skin me alive if you didn’t, not to mention Lisa. They think the sun shines out of your backside.”

“Yes, I’ll be there as usual. I thought Lisa was bringing Bradley this time, now that they’re official.”

“She is. He’s a brave man taking on my sister. Right, let’s get this over with. I’m glad we booked the room so we can both have a drink.” Raz pulled a face.

“It’s all right. I’m not going to have too much because women don’t like a drunk. And I know to ask questions, but not suck up too much if I see anyone I fancy. The place will be packed, so perhaps this will be the night.” He nudged Raz. “All those bankers together in one room.”

“That’s one word for them,” Raz whispered to himself.

Jack put his hands on his hips and struck what Raz called his Henry VIII pose. “Look, you insisted I come tonight and stop sitting at home complaining no one loves me and that my wrist aches.”

“Well, you won’t find Ms. Right if you stay home with me every Saturday night, now will you?” Even if I love every minute of it and hate the thought you might not be there.

A little winter magic might have been the push they needed, but Harry worries that when it wears off, he’ll no longer be the man Andrew wants.

Love can conquer all, but can it beat death?

Review: Oh wow. This was beautiful. Made me tear up in places. Wonderful writing. Highly recommended.

Excerpt:

I glared at the mirror of my en-suite bathroom, enhancing the crow’s feet fanning out from my dark grey eyes. A thick tuft of brown hair obscured my view, so I blew it out of my face. “Just this once,” I said, pointing a finger at my own reflection. “Behave yourself. Just this once.”
No reply, of course. There never was one when I really needed it. With a sigh of annoyance I turned away. Heading downstairs, I pushed the cuff of my checkered sleeve back and looked at my watch. Only six am. There were two guests at the Lake House B&B. Neither of them would be up before eight, so I had plenty of time to put some effort into my own breakfast.
On my way past the reception desk, I slowed and glanced at the check-in log. It was still handwritten, even though I did keep records on the computer too these days.
Owen Ashurst, arrival two pm. The booking had been made through the B&B website, not over the phone. But I just knew. I knew. I eased a long breath through pursed lips, hoping it’d settle the squirmy nerves in my belly.
“It’s fine, Nathaniel,” I told myself. “It’s fine.” I wanted to close my eyes and remember all the ways in which Owen and I had been best friends for life. Until life got between us.
I forced myself to walk on toward the kitchen and open the swinging door. Elisa Brown wasn’t in yet, and that suited me fine. I usually didn’t mind her bright and cheerful personality as she did the dishes and restocked the food pantry. But today I wanted a little peace and quiet to ease my whirling mind.
Without giving much thought to what I was doing, I set about making an asparagus and feta cheese omelet, toasted and buttered two slices of bread, roasted a couple of tomatoes and mushrooms, and slid it all on a plate with perfect timing. The old house with the white country kitchen was still quiet. I settled in the seat at the head of the huge wooden table with a sigh of relief. My nerves were ebbing. There was nothing to worry about. Owen was just another guest.
I scooped some egg onto my fork and aimed it at my mouth, when the pan I’d left in the sink rattled. I put the fork down again.
“Gabe, I swear, if you mess with me today I will cover every mirror in this place for an entire month. Don’t think I won’t.”
Silence.
Satisfied, I lifted my fork again. I opened my mouth. The pan gave a tiny rebellious rattle and I was about to say something else, when the door behind me opened. Elisa burst inside in a flurry of snow and…Christmas lights?
“Morning Elisa.” I knew better than to comment, despite the fact that the outside of the Lake House already looked like an exploded Christmas tree.
“Before you say anything, these are for inside. And morning, Nathaniel.”
“I wasn’t going to say anything.”
“I could hear you think it from here. It’s time for a Christmas tree in the house again.”
I gave her a long steady look. She shrugged out of the oversized winter coat needed in these Michigan winters. Her curly blonde hair drifted with static around her round, pretty face. “You do remember what happened the last time we had a Christmas tree, don’t you?” I still suspected Gabe, but innocent until proven guilty and all that.
“I do. That was five years ago. I got a fake one, so this one won’t catch fire. It’s still in my trunk.” She fluttered her eyelashes at me. “If you’d be so kind.”
Resigned, I shoveled eggs in my mouth as Elisa went to hang her coat away. When she returned she busied herself with tidying up the pots and pans I’d used. I’d feel bad about her cleaning up my mess if it wasn’t her job.
“So still just Anderson and Houzer? No stragglers wandered in last night?”
“No, but we do have a new guest coming in today at two.”
“I saw, yes. Owen something. I freshened up the Bear room yesterday.”
“Actually, I’d like to put him in the Superior room.”
Elisa zeroed in on me like a well-aimed missile and I mournfully stared at my empty plate. I had a vague idea a mouthful of food would come in handy any second n—
Two tiny fists planted themselves on a pair of well-formed hips just inside my field of vision. “Nathaniel O’Donnelly, is there something you have to tell me?”
The B&B had twelve double rooms, and each of them was named after a lake in Michigan. It’d make sense to put Owen in the Bear room because it was down the same hallway as the other guests’ rooms. Efficient, when it came to changing sheets and towels. Conflicting with my plans to keep Owen close to my own room, which was at the opposite end of the large old house.

Noel glanced at him, lifted an eyebrow in a wary fashion. “What are you talking about?”

“Did I go to fast for you?”

Noel swooshed a hand over his head.

Justin chuckled at the motion. He figured he wouldn’t get an easy acceptance about anything he offered to Noel. He didn’t blame him. After being on the streets for so long, Noel would’ve lost trust and belief in most folks. It would take a while for Justin to earn Noel’s trust that he wouldn’t toss him aside. “Okay. We’ll go through this again.”

“A little slower.”

He would need to be careful around Noel, not to push him too far and lose whatever momentum they built together. Part of his mind started to click with a wonderful, if crazy, plan he wanted to enact with this kid, who’d had such a rough life. He would play Secret Santa this year for a very special person. It would be a very special type of Secret Santa game.

“Well?” Noel held out his hands. “What’s the deal?”

“I’m offering you a job. Here.”

“Got that part. What’s the job?”

“You’re going to work here at BookWorm as another sales associate. Amy quit yesterday and I’m going crazy with the holiday hours. We have seven shopping days left in this season and I need to make them count. You know the store since you’ve been here every day and pretty much been to every corner of it. I’ll show you how to handle the inventory, clean, shelve, and pull books for online orders.”

“Just like that you’re giving me this job, on the spot. Why? You know nothing about me.”

“Thanks to this chat and how you opened up to me, I believe I know you a little better than you think. You’ll get twelve bucks an hour to start plus overtime.”

“What? Twelve dollars an hour? That’s above minimum.”

“I always pay above minimum. You’re saving me from going crazy. One of my clerks quit during the craziest time of the year and she damn well knew it. You love books. You need a job. It’s a win-win situation for both of us.”

“I don’t…”

“Accept the offer, please, Noel. I’m not going to accept a refusal.”

“Okay. Okay. I accept the position.”

“Excellent.”

Noel cleared his throat and rubbed his hands together. “Thank you.”

“More than welcome,” Justin said with a warm smile. “We’re happy to have you onboard. We’ll fill out paperwork later.” He finished his latte and the last of the apple cake. “Dang, love this stuff, I should have gotten another one.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Oh. Sorry. Sorry. This cake is one of my vices.” Justin wiped his fingers on a napkin to clean them. “I need you to write down your sizes so I can go shopping.” He would gather a few more things to put his Secret Santa plan in action, but he had to take care and not frighten him. Though Noel put up a damn punchy front, underneath there was a scared rabbit. No matter what, this was going to be the best holiday season ever.

“I can’t believe this.” Noel scribbled down what Justin wanted. “Why are you doing this for me? Even with a chat, you still don’t know me from the next guy on the street.”

“You’ve come in here every day for two weeks solid. You’re quiet and conscientious of others around you. You’re an honest fella who hasn’t had the best path in life.” Justin leaned forward and placed his hand on Noel’s knee. “I didn’t want to see you standing out in the damn snow every day and hiding from the world in my store. I wondered who you were and where you would go once I closed the store. My grandparents taught me over years not to ignore anyone, but to do something to change what I believe is wrong. I think your situation fits the bill.”

Noel stared down and then up at Justin. “Man, I could be a total loser giving you a sob story to steal everything from you.”

“I’ll be blunt.” Justin captured Noel’s gaze with his direct one. “Are you conning me?”

Noel blanched.

Justin lifted his hand and pointed a finger at him. “I didn’t think so. It isn’t in you.”

“How…”

“Good judge of character. This conversation cemented my decision along with your behavior these last couple of weeks. Every day, you select a book to read and you put it back on the shelf. You’re not a thief or trying to scam me, Noel.” Justin dropped his hand again on Noel’s knee. “I have a guest room at home too. You’re welcome to stay there. No more about this sleeping in a tent thing, it’s ridiculous to think about it.”

“Really? You’re not going to expect anything from me? I mean—”

“What? Oh!” Justin reddened, shook his head, dropped his hand from Noel’s knee, and cleared his throat. “No, no, no.” He waved his hand. “I don’t expect you in my bed in exchange for anything I’m doing to help you. If you want me, hell, it is your choice all the way. Though on my end, you’re adorable and way cute. So, yeah, I want you, but I won’t take advantage of the situation.”

Noel flushed fifty shades of red.

“Noel?”

“WoulditbesobadifIwantedtobeinyourbed?” he muttered all in one word.

Justin cocked his head to the side. Did he hear Noel say what he thought he did? Perhaps his Secret Santa plan could work after all. He hoped it wouldn’t scare Noel away. No matter what, he had to offer him the safe haven he seemed to crave. This beautiful young man needed to have those shadows removed from his gorgeous grayish-blue eyes, the exhaustion banished from the slender shoulders, a full belly of good food, a soft pillow where he could sleep without being on guard, along with friendship, light, and warmth poured back into his heart. Not to mention, Justin wanted to show Noel there was more to a birthday and Christmas than loss and heartache. He would figure out all the details as he pulled this cockamamie plan together. He might scramble a couple of days, but it would come together. Either way, there were eight days to Christmas, so he had to make it work.

Excerpt

Cramming his hands in his jacket pockets, Jack looked at the ground, and with the toe of his boot, he drew a circle in the snow. Adding eyes and a smile, Jack admired his masterpiece for a moment. It wasn’t quite right. He crouched and held his hand over the simple drawing. Slowly, he pulled back his hand. The soft flakes quivered. He teased the snow, rearranging the picture, then straightened up. The image’s smile was gone, replaced with a frown.
“Hello, Jack,” he said to the drawn face.

With a heavy sigh, he dragged his foot across the image, wiping the sidewalk clear. If only it was that easy to wipe away the morose feeling from inside him.

He rubbed a hand over his face and took a deep breath. There was a smile on his lips as he looked ahead at the elderly gentleman making his way toward him.

“Too cruel?” he asked himself.

Maybe. Jack smiled. Or maybe not. He wiggled his fingers and felt the cold air surge between them. This was who he was—the bringer of mishaps, ice, and mischief, and of the frost on the window panes.

He was Jack Frost.
